Tuesday Dec 19th - good dual to watch on Flo

Altitude in Wyoming made the difference. That and Meredith being saved by the bell in the third.

Same way he has always wrestled so I believe it was the
altitude to some extend..Never seen Heil that tired but what ya
get with so many close ones..Tip my hat to him 55 wins in a row
don't like his style but he is a winner..Also this is manily a indivual sport.

Long bus ride? Flu? Average officials?
i doubt smith mentions the altitude, but i do expect him to take exception with their performance.

matches were 5-5 and 3 of their AAs lost that cant all be elevation.

so ill go with the HR fav....training through it. Yep they are training through on their way to Rome.

Almost has to be Yianni, right? Heil, Jack, Meredith, and Eierman have all lost.

Guess they could make McKenna #1 due to the Ohio State Not Wrestling rule.
OSU wrestled Vegas and ASU in a dual. McKenna was on the u23 world team. Can't really say that about OSU this year, really just Snyder and McKenna. Just being honest, they did more than most.

That said McKenna absolutely does NOT deserve #1. He doesn't deserve to be ahead of Jack, Meredith, Yanni, or Heil.

In all seriousness, Laramie is at 7200 ft. From personal experience, strenuous exertion at that altitude is brutal if you're not acclimated.

Pokes also wrestled yesterday at Northern Colorado. Wrestling the very next day at a higher altitude, with a 2-hr bus ride in between, might not have been enough recovery. The local Holiday Inn probably didn't have a hyperbaric chamber either.

The Pokes who won close decisions, learned how to push through some serious physical and mental adversity.

My crack was more about Tomasello being ranked #1 while missing the entire season due to injury.

I say Meredith 1 Yianni 2. Yes Yianni is awesome and has the H2H. But when you beat 1 and 2 in last 3 days he has to be 1
I don't see why CP is throwing in the Red and Smith wins in there. Is he expecting Yianni to lose to those guys? Doubtful. I guess he is prepping us for his decision.

But what the hell, may as well give it to Meredith. Because Yianni will have it soon enough and for a long, long time.

Actually 4 lost, Heil/Brock/Martinez by 1-pt decisions and Rogers 6-2.

That definitely can be altitude, though I agree that Smith won't let them off the hook for it.

CP picked Nick Lee to be an All-American, but didn't list him as one of Yianni's key wins.

I can't believe I'm about to defend Dean Heil, but I think he should remain #1. Returning two time champ who is 55-1 in his last 56 matches, and he's beaten everyone at the weight class (except Yianni, whom he has yet to wrestle).

Returning two time champ Stieber remained at number 1 after losing a December match to Zain.

... and 2x champ Ed Ruth dropped after losing to Gabe Dean.

Univ of Wyoming schedule said the dual was in Cheyenne, EL 6062 ft

Still, that’s much higher up than Stillwater ( EL 984 ft).

Totally agree that going from EL 1000 to EL 6000ft QUICKLY, you likely will get winded and recovery will be an issue.

But, Sunday was in Reno (EL 4510ft)
Monday in Greeley, CO ( EL 4660 ft)

That’s 72 hours to acclimate to higher elevation.

My, opinion - I think 3 straight days of competing was more of a factor than elevation.

It’s not like they were wrestling at 10,000ft

Poke starters did not compete at Reno. I guess it's possible that Smith took the entire team there for acclimation -- though that would've been a huge travel roster since 13 non-starters wrestled at Reno.

I think it was definitely the altitude. If Heil wasn't gassed....he finishes the take down at the end of the third period. Home field advantage made for a very interesting and enjoyable dual meet. If Pope had not fired off that quick dive after a flash take down and quick escape by Jacobe.....it may very well have been a Wyoming upset victory. Very exciting to watch. Never regret joining Flo. Great Match.

Question.
Okie State puts their non starters in Reno and the Scuffle and has 16 scheduled matches. How many competition dates (points) are you allowed? I was thinking it was 16. I counted 17 points (i think) for PSU and what I think is 19 for Okie State.

I'm in the camp that rankings don't matter too much in mid December. There is still way too much wrestling to be done.
That said, I'd go Yianni #1, simply because head to head competition trumps other factors, IMO.

I think it doesn't count if their guys wrestle unattached. Offhand I think 6 attached makes it a competiion date. Can't remember the max dates offhand.

If they pay for 6 or more entrants it counts as a competition. I am thinking they must use Reno and the Scuffle as official competitions.

Competition date limit is 16, both for team AND individual (separate rules).

Several things are going on with the Oklahoma State schedule. First, only non-starters and redshirts are going to several events listed on the Cowboy schedule, so they will not count as team completion dates. Second, consecutive day competitions only count as one competition date. This could be a tournament, like the Scuffle, where the 2-day event counts as one completion date, or consecutive-day duals, such as Northern Colorado (12/18), and Wyoming (12/19). Teams are allowed to do this twice in a season.

Lastly, minimum 7 wrestlers attached (paid for by the institution, wearing the school's singlet, etc.) at an event constitutes a competition date. 6 is mentioned several times above.

That is actually a very challenging 3 days which should help them get ready for March.

Good thread...other comments, some opinion, some not...

I loved the Meredith / Heil bout. Sure, not much scoring, but good action. Sometimes, guys are just so evenly matched, it works out that way. Not one once of criticism from me.

Ranking folks can't go wrong with any of the aforementioned #1, #2, etc. rankings at 141. Yianni was right on!! And YES, at the end of the year, some of the rankings DO MATTER. The coaching staffs will use them as information when providing their input into the Coaches Ranking.

3 days (72 hours) is not nearly enough to get acclimated to elevation. It's more like 3-6 weeks. No doubt in my mind the elevation affected the Cowboy wrestlers in this dual.

I would rank “lecture from Kyle Snyder about meaningfulness of regular season NCAA duals and tournaments” number one on my list of most ironic things I’ve read on Twitter.

I think his point was every event you are in matters. Too many wrestlers (not ours thankfully) say things like duals dont matter, regular season don’t matter, etc.

You want to grow the sport, everything “matters”. Big matchups matter, duals matter (that atmosphere was cool last night), etc.

Kyle Snyder could have quit college wrestling and focused solely on his senior career. I for one am happy to see him compete at every NCAA event he’s in whether that’s a big dual or tourney

Rutgers is my 2nd favorite team. Made me sick to my stomach listening to Richie Lewis after Big dual with Iowa saying to reporters “it don’t matter and it’s only practice till March”. Tell that to the 7k fans that came out to support the team. You don’t get 7k to a practice. Sends the wrong message
