Way to go Cutch...he represented our high school (Kiski Area) and winningest coach in WPIAL history (Chuck Tursky who I wrestled for) well....& a nugget for you...Cutch was the first (& only to date) state champion under Tursky...

Biggest take-aways:
1. Gotta finish on the legs. If you're gonna be mad-offensive, you gotta be effective.
2. Gas tanks still gotta be pushed, but that's to be expected with an opening dual (of closer competition).
3. Gotta find a way to smell blood in some of those matches. A few team points left on the mat. Winning by 14 and 7 means there was a chance for extra, there.

But overall, a decent performance. A high standard has been set, and there were spots that exceeded and spots than underachieved.

What about Bobby Banks at 103 pounds? This was in 1994. Was Tursky coach then?

This...it looks like Rasheed is cutting a ton of weight to me.

Confirmed by Ironhead. Let's see how he does after he has more than 1 match under his belt. I thought he looked great through 2 periods against a pretty tough kid.

Agreed, kids got a lot of skill and some funk that looks like it oughtta be pretty entertaining...if he gets his weight under control than he should be a tough out for anyone.

Great win despite some of the disappointment. Teams are always going to squat on our aggressiveness, then try to win at the end. If they were forced to go from the start, they know they would lose. Vt played their cards the only way they could and it paid off for them in the score. Good game plan, even if we don't like the style points....or lack of style.

We had two RS Fr beat guys who were ranked #3......these are "HOLY COW" moments for us. The disappointments can be fixed. Good Stuff Men!!!

Good job on the pbp Kid, I watched the match on espn3, and I think you did a terrific job for those who couldn't see it, kudos!!

My takeaways from today...

-Nico - He'll be fine and this will probably only motivate him more.

-Jordan - Looked solid in all three positions against a quality opponent, nice win!

-Jimmy - looks too hesitant early on - he's gotta get after it early and often if this weight jump will work in his favor.

-Zain - BEAST!!!

-Jason - Exciting match, I wasn't very surprised by the upset though - he is the real deal!
-Shakur - weight cut a bit much? Great first two periods though

-Bo - this one was a bigger surprise to me than the Nolf upset because I thought Epperly was not just upset but he was never even really in it despite whatever the score said - not a position that Bo doesn't look like the more comfortable guy in! This was my favorite match of the day!

-Matt - tons of improvement! Didn't get the Tech, but he was trying to push through a serious stall in that last :30.

- Morgan - someone said something about him holding his ribs - I didn't see it but I hope there's nothing there...Morgan seemed nasty on top but a little too careful on his feet - I think the offense is always there if he needs it but he seems to hold back at times.

-Jan - I love the call to forfeit...nothing to gain with that match only two weeks into your college wrestling career.

Solid win and an entertaining dual with some upsets for both teams - can't wait to finally see these guys in person next week!!!

Sounds like the match score wasn't that close. Didn't see it, but Tech had what 5 TD's? What was PSU's number, 15-20? And riding time. All winners were pretty dominate. Not worried about Nico, JG just never seems to elevate, Rasheed just gassed in 3rd.

I would like to know what the riding time edge was myself...PSU's top game was on point!

I'm not familiar with a Bobby Banks...he may have wrestled at Kiski Prep....coach Tursky has been the HC at Kiski Area High School since the early 80's....

Cali....nice write up.

Jimmy and Nico can fix their issues and win rematches. The way Nolf and Bo looked Im not so sure VaTech would reverse those matches, I just think they were/are the better wrestlers.

Which spells trouble for the rest of the field. Two of our studs have an off day which happens to most everyone but the elite of the elite and our 2 young studs step in and right the ship.

Watching the opening weekend, other than the obvious at HWT, we dont have holes. Rasheed needed today to make changes in dieting/habits. He will and will most likely be dominate. The real test for him will be the SS. if he holds his own that trip, March is going to a hole lotta fun. McFadden is a kid to watch. He got an upset over ISU and lost a close one to stanford. He is good and certainly not a bad loss, just a bad 3rd period.

As for JJ, a friend of mine who knows a little about being an undersized HWT (he won a title in the 90s) said he routinely was 230-245 and would have to take practice days off to keep his weight up. Barry davis would get him his own room on road trips so the guys cutting wouldnt see him eating. Todays sit is to be expected with a guy like waltz, doubt we see it on the cali trip.

With this group, Hwt will be on a "if needed" basis. They don't need to wrestle JJ until the Scuffle and the duals. The other nine can really bring it. Who else on their meet schedule will get close? Michigan, O$U? Maybe.

VT's strategy seemed to be to get through the first period scoreless. I was surprised that Dance didn't get a stall for doing nothing but backing up and/ or holding on with a front headlock. Jimmy didn't push enough. When he goes scoreless in the first, I'm always nervous. I would like to have seen McCutcheon and McIntosh push harder for the takedown to get that extra team point. If all the above and one kid struggling to cut weight are all we have to complain about, however, then it's okay. Loved how Nolf and Nickal say hello to college wrestling.
