WTT

Oh, you guys!

Thanks, dudes.

Looks like a little extra time for Hall with these consis going on. Guess I expected them to roll right into the finals (in true FS tournament form). That's encouraging.

NIco Graff

In the first Nico lost a scramble and subsequently gave up two laces, where Graff had both ankles separately. Down 6-0. Blood time for Graff. Graff now fully head wrapped, and they'll restart. Graff's left eye appears puffy and is barely open at break.

Second, Nico has an uphill climb but Graff not giving up anything yet. Nico very active but not getting inside. Now Nico gets a step out point. 6-1. Graff looks gassed, 1:16 left. 6-3 with passivity piont? Nico in on a double, Graff looks chest wrap but Nico converts. 6-4. :11 left and Nico will run out of time. Nice work to come back but not enough. 6-4.

Nolf Massa

Nolf's ankle still taped. Massa targets the ankle on a shot but Nolf slips it. Now Massa goes behind for 2. Nolf looks a little sluggish, not really pushing the pace. They go out of bounds but no score. Nolf in clean on a leg, but settles for a step out after trying to pass the leg behind his own back. 2-1 at break.

Nolf looked double, switched to a single, then looked cradle, but nothing... Nolf right back in and this time converts on a leg. Gut for two more. 5-2 Nolf. 1:00 left. Massa with a front headlock, tries to turn corner but Nolf right there. Stalemate. Desperation time now. Nolf with another two as Massa's chest wrap fails. 7-2, Nolf IMar tomorrow. Nolf gives a good luck tap to Hall as he exits the mat.

Zahid Hall

Zahid gets behind but Hall quadpods out of bounds and it's 1-0. Hall shoots in on a single, but Zahid whizzers, stalemate. Hall looks duck for the second time but again abandons it quickly. :30 remaining. Break.

Zahid shoots off the whistle (he always does this, it shouldn't be a surprise by now). Hall whizzers but Zahid has the leverage and converts. 3-0. Hall tries the duck again, gets stuck midway through, and Zahid easily counters for another two. 5-0, 1:38 left. Hall nearly gets a step-out point but Zahid dances through it. Hall takes a sloppy shot. Hall now takes a sloppy arm spin, which they call a slip I guess b/c it's still 5-0 as time runs out. Zahid prevails. No guitar or hammer related celebrations.

The bend in the back marking on the NLWC singlet bothers me every time I see one. But also, they look cool for that.

Marky just plain quit on high crotch. Where is the killer instinct? He has too much respect for Zahid IMO, it tempers his aggressiveness. He need to lead early. Everytime he gets behind with Zahid it usually goes down hill from there, while when he gets an early lead good things typically follow.

Hall can be so frustrating to watch — looked like he couldn’t wait for the match to be over from about 30 seconds in.

I badly want to see Hall at 74KG again. Let him redshirt, get away from the grind of college wrestling season, and get his weight under control. If he doesn't want to finish out folkstyle... then fine! PSU has options. I just want Mark back!

Tomorrow's best-of 3 Finals, the winner to move on to Final X.
  • 57kg Gilman v Cruz (Fix in Final X)
  • 61kg Graff v Brewer (Colon in Final X)
  • 65kg Oliver v Retherford (Diakomihalis in Final X)
  • 70kg Ashnault v Green (Deakin in Final X)
  • 74kg Nolf v Martinez (Burroughs in Final X)
  • 79kg Valencia v Dieringer (Dake in Final X)
  • 86kg Heflin v Downey (Taylor in Final X)
  • 92kg Macchiavello v Nickal (Cox in Final X)
  • 97kg Walz v Gadson (Snyder in Final X)
  • 125kg Steveson v Coon (Gwiazdowski in Final X)
Penn State could have as many as four members on the World Team.

I know we were in trouble when I saw they were wrestling on a Saturday, one of the things I remember reading last year was that you need to wrestle Z on Friday night to win

There is data to support this. On Fridays, Mark is 2-0 all time. On Saturday Zahid is now 3-0, 4-0 if you count the all star classic.

How would you place the odds of Zain, Nolf, and Nickal winning the best two out of three on Sunday. Here's an initial stab in the dark (not a prediction):

Zain 50%
Nolf 35%
Nickal 90%

What does each have to do in particular to beat their opponent (besides score more points). In other words, what are some of the keys to victory?

Among other things, I think Zain has to avoid giving up a 4; take early leads and make Oliver (who tends to stall when he is ahead) panic a bit and go for bad shots.

Nolf has to keep it close and avoid being bullied around, gutted or leg laced. He may also need to get creative with his attacks because IMar has such powerful hips. Perhaps some single legs and drive IMar off the mat for a single point to get things going.

Nickal just has to stay on his game and keep attacking.

Thoughts?

Here's Zain very controversial loss to Oliver in 2017. Zain was up 3-0 in the waning minute of the bout. Oliver is a given 2 points for Zain's hands-to-the-face, which may have just been a hands-to-the-forehead (and a caution against Zain as well). Then in the final few seconds, Oliver is given 2 points for a ridiculous "correct throw" that clearly did not either expose Zain's back or take him down. Cael and Casey challenge and lose another point. All told, Oliver scored zero "true" points. Thankfully, the "correct throw" nonsense has been done away with since that time.

Don’t think we’ll see a 100% Nolf today against IMAR but it’ll make it even sweeter if he gets past him. I was near the trainer table a few min ago and Nolf was wrapped from his ankle to halfway up his shin

He was going to have a tough time with a healthy ankle being his first tourney at a new weight, but you can never count him out. Just hope he can give it a good go. I suffered a lot of ankle injuries in my day and they are usually worse the next day.
