XFL to return in 2020

In the last go round:

The New York/New Jersey Enforcers featured four former Nittany Lions including:
running back Mike Archie '92-'95,
center Eric Cole '96-'99,
quarterback Wally Richardson '92, '94-'96, and
defensive back Mark Tate '93-'96.

Offensive guard Sean Love '88-'89 suited up as a member of the Orlando Rage.

They were the NY/NJ Hitmen... Not sure where Enforcers came from.

I went to a few games. They had this QB Charles Puleri... terrible. Wally was much better but got hurt late in the season.

There was a sort of "regionality" enforced on the teams, all owned by the league.
That's not all they are enforcing. Saw a TV interview a few minutes ago, in which McMahon said that the XFL will insist on the Anthem being played prior to all games, with teams on the field, and prohibit kneeling. He said they would also prohibit players with any kind of criminal offenses ("including DUI's") from playing.

He apparently sees a marketing angle here.

Yep, and I'm in. The NFL won't offer that. This is a reasonably alternative for me.

Quick Thoughts:

1) If all teams are owned by the XFL then player allocation, draft, free agency, how to attract & reward top players are problems to be solved.

2) This will not affect top NCAA programs nor stars in NFL, but players on the margins, like those that didn't meet academic standards for college, or practice squad rookie free agent NFLers. The best FCS and maybe some group-of-5 teams may be impacted as XFL might pay more than a scholarship.

3) Unless they allocate a separate pool of money (as the USFL kind of did) they cannot sign any superstars. (like CFL & oldXFL, they may get some players with NFL potential, but not a lot).

4) The officiating will be a challenge (or impact other levels, depending on pay). Not sure if NCAA/Conference/NFL would allow refs to work XFL games. If not, they'd get high school refs. If they pay enough, they'd steal "quality??" refs from other leagues/levels (and they are already questionable). Not sure what the XFL strategy would be - seems unlikely they'd pay refs enough to steal (would probably be more than they pay some players).

5) Coaching - they need name brands. Coaches might be the only semi-recognizable names, as they were in oldXFL. Sons of famous coaches might get a fair shot (Jay).

6) With 40 man rosters, play will be very different than anything we've seen at any level except maybe Arena. But they'll play on full size fields, so still very different from Arena.

7) They are shooting for 2 hour games. Combined with smaller rosters, that means very tired teams by the end of the game. Calls for entirely new ways to structure a team & playbook/playcalling. As defense tends traditionally to tire first, offense should heat up towards the end of games.

Feel free to waste all your money on this league. NFL will continue doing fine without you. 100% chance you’re watching the super bowl, also.

Didn’t I see something on unique camera angles. Gotta believe he is talking some Helmet cams. That would be pretty cool to have a helmet cam on a QB or a RB, MLB and a safety on defense.

Usually very shaky & hard to watch. Need some real great video stabilization and 360 degree view would be good for VR. A Call of Duty type view.

Cameras & sensors on the football itself would also be amazing. But again, needs to have some crazy technology development first (no one wants to watch a spiraling picture - would have to be able to make it smooth & steady - even when tumbling end over end).

Most of that will come in all sports. Someday. It will cost more that $100 Million to develop. And it will be worth more.

Ball-eye view? C'mon - that would be spectacular!

I'm thinking drones. Would be neat to see multiple drones tracking the plays both run and pass from many angles, plus you wouldn't have the shake from something like a helmet cam.

They'd have to play in a studio lot. Which might be interesting. But drones buzzing around would ruin the view for live crowd, I think.

Also, imagine the controversy the first time a pass is deflected by a drone. Is it dead, is it live? Maybe that just becomes part of the gamesmanship? QB under pressure, all receivers seem covered? Bank your pass off a drone.

4th dimensional passing game.

I'd say the rule would be similar to when the jumbotron is hit by punts in dallas. Plus 4k drones these days are a little bigger than your hand so I doubt it'd be an issue for the live crowd.

Will there be mandatory prayer before the games???

I refused to watch the original XFL because I didn't consider it "real football"....if they actually drop the gimmicks this could be mildly successful. The NFL isn't going to worry about it as a threat or anything but there's room for more football IMO. I'm curious to see what they come up with regarding schedule, time of year and format.

A big mistake imo was chucking NFL Europe. It would have been a perfect NFL minor league system for any kid that didn't want to play school. Why pay for it when the ncaa is going to give it to you for free though.

100% not watching the super bowl. Didn't last year (first time I can remember not doing so).

Also didn't watch Alabama beat Georgia with the help of the refs that many here outlined and attached clips from to still not determine who the actual best team in college football was. UCF that beat the team that destroyed both Bama and Georgia? Bama? Georgia in a fairly called game? Ohio St, Penn St, or Wisconsin after the most dominant by far conference, 7 wins and one Michigan, was excluded while a losing bowl record SEC had 50% of the invites?

So things I would tell Vince to try.....

1. If you want a 2 hour game (that seems short, maybe target 2.5 hours instead of the current 3:15). Halftime is 5 minutes and don't go in locker room. 25 second play clock instead of 40 seconds so essentially means all no huddle offense. Two time-outs per half only, 30 seconds each. Cap of 2 minutes on any replay review.

2. No kick-offs, just get the ball at the 25 yard line.

3. No extra points, must go for a 2 point conversion, from the 4 yard line.

4. Field Goals...40 yards and under is 2 points, 41-54 yards is 3 points, 55+ is 4 points.

5. If Vince wants a 40 man roster (which makes sense to try and keep salary in check) than need to goto 10 man per side (not 11). So on offense essentially one RB, 2 WRs, 1 tight end, so eliminating a WR position. On defense, most will play a 4-2-5.

6. Only one specialist allowed, so either the kicker does the punting or somebody else on the team has to.

7. QB calls the plays on the field. No headset, no check with me, etc...

Can we get a return of the USFL?

Second question...Had Trump not pulled that stunt of moving to fall, could the USFL ultimately succeeded?

It very well could have, they had a lot of young stars in that league so it wasn't just a dumping ground for left over talent. Guys like Jim Kelly, Reggie White, and Herschel Walker. Plus they drew 50k plus (in the early 80's) to their championship games and they were televised on National Television.

I like a lot of your suggestions. A couple of comments:
For 10 men, it sounds like you're saying, remove a back (so keep 7 on line with outside players eligible and 3 backs: QB + 2RB or 1RB/1WR or 2 WR). No doubt a 4-2-5 would be effective against that ;).
With a 40 man roster, let teams choose however many specialists they want. Most will go with your suggested hybrid placekicker/punter but, if they want to specialize each role, let them choose how to pay that price within the roster limit.
Check with me OK if they can squeeze it into your 25 second play clock.

Will this be a spring or fall league ? I didn’t get that from the article.

Wish I could remember the comedian who did a wrap on this (thinking Carlin or Leary but not sure) but instead of banning ped's as most sports do players should be allowed take as many ped's as they want. We know the long term effects of 'roids and the like so if you want to take the risk go for it. Heck, make it mandatory for players to take their bovine hormone injections as part of the pregame festivities.
