NFL Draft thread....

The fact that a few of the PSU players were not drafted might serve as a warning for next year's draft eligible players. Might make a few return for another year.
Tough for this year's undrafted players.

Players not drafted simply means the NFL didn’t think those players were good enough. This is normal. Marginal players don’t get better by playing one more year. They have physical limitations called a ceiling.

Mitchell Messenbrink's Maturity

Now that the OTT’s are over, I would like to see if anyone sensed the same thing that I thought that I watched, and that was a sudden maturity of Mitchell Messenbrink. Even though he lost to Jordan Burroughs, he did score a couple points against JB, but there were some things that I saw from MM, beginning with his smile prior to the hand shake at the beginning of the match that I found interesting, and that was his confidence at the start of the match. The MM bounce. Beginning with the first period I saw how MM squared himself to JB on the mat, and I think it made JB uncomfortable. As the 1st period progressed, MM showed some inexperience and allowed a take down and a back exposure. On the restart MM went straight back to the middle of the mat. At this point, JB was not sure of this upstart kid, but I think he knew he was in a match that he was not ready for. Head slapping ensued on the next start, and the official stopped it, and MM wanted to make sure that he was on the up and up by attempting a high 5 to JB to let him know that is competition, nothing more. But if I recall JB did not respond. This is only 30 seconds into the first period. In my opinion, MM was more prepared for this match than JB. As the 1st period progressed, JB’s experience showed. But watching MM continue to square up against JB, I was impressed even more with MM and his preparation for a wrestler like JB. Down 7-0 after 2, MM continued to square up against JB and attempted leg attacks. Even with under 1 minute to go MM continued his attacks, and JB was not sure, at times, how to defend MM’s attacks. With time winding down, there was some head butting and head pushing initiated by MM to let JB know that MM is coming at the decorated wrestler, and whatever the outcome, JB now knows who MM is. The shove with :07 left in the match is important. Sometimes a torch is passed, but a lot people of don’t see it or understand it. I like to think that I just saw a torch passed from a decorated champion to a young Penn State wrester who I think is going to shine in the NCAA’s as well as the world stage. I like to think that, in this particular match, I watched Mithell Messenbrink progress to the next level of the great Penn State type of wresters like David Taylor, Jason Nolf and Zain Retherford. Penn State Nation get ready to cheer on the next of Penn State’s incredible person/wrestler. This is just my observation.

NFL Draft thread....

I don't know, but he couldn't have gotten drafted lower if he had come back. And if his NFL career turns out to be just a training camp, he would have at least made $50K-100K in NIL if he had come back for 2024, wouldn't he? Maybe left PSU with a nice car, paid off. Could have played another year with his brother. It was hard for me to believe how slow King ran at the combine. Never heard any excuses, but surely a year working on his speed could have gotten a few ticks off of that which would have helped his case to get drafted higher. And he might have rebounded from his less than stellar season.

Didn't some that looked critically at game film believe that Dixon played better in 2023? I still believe if Dixon and King would have played in the bowl it would have resulted in giving up less passing yards and may have helped PSU to the win. Cam Miller played pretty well but still gave up a good many catches on great throws. Maybe a more experienced CB takes a penalty or two to prevent those longer catches, or gets away with a couple penalties. But Dixon was out of eligibility to he wasn't going to play much in the bowl anyway.

And what about Jacobs? The write ups on him for the draft were pretty complimentary.

King just gets taken near end of 7th..... by the Packers.

If you don’t object, for discussion purposes I must disagree on a couple points you made.

First, unless a bowl game is part of the CFP format, it is an irrelevant and meaningless game. So, players opting out of irrelevant bowls (no playoff implication), are making a personal decision which is perfectly fine. The Peach Bowl was a non-playoff game.

Second, Cam Miller got torched repeatedly in the Peach Bowl. In fact, Miller and Zion Tracy were so bad, the staff immediately hit the portal and brought in multiple defensive backs as an insurance policy. I doubt Miller will receive the majority of snaps in the 2024 season unless there are some major injuries to the other DBs.

Draft coverage

Yep, didn’t draft any Pitt players because they hung around the practice field. Or any younger brother of a current player. Or someone that just maybe can play center even though they never did.

The last two drafts have been great. Something is different 🤷
This is one of the reasons NFL and NHL are so much better than MLB. The draft is important and if you’re good at it, regardless of how big your city is or how much money the owner has, you can build a bad team into a good team in a reasonable amount of time. If you like competition, NFL and NHL are the sports for you. If you like rigged systems that are little more than Globetrotters vs Washington Generals, welcome to MLB and, sadly, college football.

We're clearly doomed! 🤣

Draft coverage

The best recruit for the Steelers since TJ Watt is clearly Omar Kahn. He is doing a spectacular job rebuilding the Steelers and keeping Tomlin away from personnel decisions. If Kahn would have been in place two years ago, Tomlin would have been prevented from picking no-talent, useless Pickett in the first round.

Great draft points up failures of our 2023 offense

Anybody who knows anything about football saw that the offensive schemes were terrible as early as the Illinois game, and definitely by the Northwestern game. The use of Singleton was coaching malpractice.

Yup...I mean, seriously, you've got two blue-chip backs, an all-world recruit at QB, three guys drafted by the NFL on the OL, one guy drafted by the NFL at TE.

The job of the coaches is to install a system that realizes the potential of all that talent and makes it work together for a productive offense. That didn't happen in 2023.
