Football Pair of former Penn State football players charged with felonies

I'm reading a book right now on the history of Georgia football and have reached the section dealing with Mark Richt's tenure. Richt is a very religious person and tried to run a very well-behaved program and mostly succeeded. However, he is quoted in the book about when you are dealing with over a 100 kids every year, you're always going to have some disciplinary issues. I stand by my statement that PSU has had a very good disciplinary record under Franklin.

Also, the incident in question occurred before summer practice even had started; the individuals are the ones to be blamed with making choices that put themselves in a criminal situation and not Franklin or the program that he runs.
I don’t disagree with most of what you wrote. I don’t have a problem with Franklin and think he’s probably handled things the right way. Unfortunately the players’ decisions reflect on the university as a whole.

Just off the top of my head…
The whole locker room video thing with Rudolph, The team doctor issue, Abdul Carter, somebody fired a gun at a residence a couple years ago. Didn’t somebody beat up a frat boy a couple years ago? Somebody was run off for hooking up with a coaches underage daughter. I’m not even looking them up. There has to be more. These aren’t things I would consider minor.

This thread is about nothing.

Thanks for a beautiful response. We're coming from different directions on some basic questions but I think there is great value and much truth in your perspective. Mainly, I'm encouraged by your attitude. You had me a little worried with the initial post or two.

May God give peace to you, your wife, and your daughter.
J-

Thank you.

One other piece of info- after the latest scandal at my high school they hired an external investigator to do research and due diligence to determine the "truth" about what happened and the internal breakdowns that lead to more abuse of students:

Louis Freeh

Enough said. I did voice my displeasure to deaf ears.

The funeral I'll attend on Friday is a guy roughly my age. Retired CIA. Sitting on pensions and wealth that he will never see. Was working a high stress job in Philly because they paid him a ton and he was good at it. Blew a gasket.....

Perspective is all in the eye of the beholder.

Godspeed to all of us.

Football Penn State RB Nick Singleton collabs with Gatorade for new billboard

Good for Nick. This is the what NIL should be about, leveraging one's fame for sponsorships and the like, and that should have been permitted by the NCAA a long time ago.

Exactly. When a player gets paid for his likeness to actually advertise goods or services, that is what NIL should be. Not just a functional "pay for play".

There haven't even been many minor incidents under Franklin.

Realistic impact on Bowl Games

The NY6 bowls will be ok since they’re attached to the playoffs. I think the rest of the bowls may be in trouble.

The last few years they had few interesting matchups. Any small schools going to the lower to mid Boca Raton type bowls will be unchanged I think. Most of their players will play and they don’t really attract a lot of fans anyway.

The mid to upper (non NY6) type bowls will take a hit IMO. Teams that generally get selected to those games will have a lot of players sit out since they aren’t in the playoffs. I think fan interest will dwindle over time as a result.

Interesting view about the lower-tier bowls. We'll see.

I think the 12-team playoff sucks all the oxygen out of the bowl system. The focus is the battle to be one of those 12 teams and then the series of games they play.

The problem for me with the previous NY6 bowls and the range of games during Bowl Week was not uninteresting matchups though there were some of those -- there always are -- but rather matchups that became uninteresting when a team's best players, the ones who got them to the bowl, declined to play. Our matchup with Ole Miss was very interesting...until we ended up having to play with a team that in important ways did not resemble the one that earned the bid.

What I'm waiting to see now is whether this will start happening in the regular season after teams are no longer in the running to make the cut of 12.

On a related note, with the playoff format in place, I think we could also do without the conference championship games. It's possible that the winner of this year's national championship will have played 16 games. I'm old enough to remember when some expressed indignation that the regular season was expanded to 11 games. It was too much to ask of college kids, some people said. Fast-forward a few decades and we're looking at...potentially 16 and definitely 15 for the prize winner. That's quite a grind.

Right, I know, there will be much snickering at the mention of "college kids." The concept has become laughable in the new era of college football. But still.

Don't get me wrong: I love this new playoff format and have waited a very long time for it to happen. But everything good comes with a price. In any case, I don't think we need the conference championship games anymore. Good luck with that though. Dollars rule.

10, 9, 8, .....

Sadly, for the first time since 2019 there are no wrestlers working on becoming four-timers (I am not counting Ferrari until the NCAA confirms he received an Oly RS).
The question with Ferrari isn't the 2024 Olympic Shirt. It's if he can get a medical shirt for his 2022 car wreck. He shouldn't, but who knows with the NCAA.

Also if he can stay out of trouble for 3 consecutive years. Well, OK, we kinda know the answer to that one.
