OT: Most Underrated Military film

got home from work last night around 11PM

my g/f had taken a nap while while I was at work, so she wanted to stay up a little and watch a movie.

Scrolled through HBO and found Heartbreak Ridge

she was so engaged with the film, we didn't go to sleep until we were halfway through

such a great, underrated Clint Eastwood film. The Swede scene is one of my favorites:

which military films do you think don't get the respect of the accepted "classics"??

Newbies

During the OSU match I noticed a family sitting in front of me that are not normally there so obviously they had gotten the tickets from the regulars. There was the Mom, Dad, daughter about mid 20's and I think her boyfriend. Well none of them knew a thing about the sport. The only thing they could yell was "get him" even when we started on the bottom. Thru the course of the match they would turn around and ask "what just happened". So I would explain things along the way.

As the match was winding down the Mom asked if it was always this intense. I commented that you normally get (2) duals that are that intense but it's not every dual. I said however within the dual there are many individual matchups that are extremely intense. At the end I asked if they enjoyed the match and they said "we have already texted our friends to see if they are using next weeks tickets" (which was the Iowa match). Needless to say they left big fans of the sport or at least PSU wrestling fans. I often wished I had more tickets to take some young wrestlers to a match to see the big stage - they would be hooked for life.

The future of higher education

How do you see the future? I wonder how (and honestly-why) brick and mortar institutions survive long term. With the availability of more and more on-line options, especially for bachelors degrees, will students still be willing (and able) to take on the debt for attending a traditional 4 year college? Would you?

I'm certainly no expert on university administration, but it looks to me like major changes are coming- and sooner than I would have thought just a few years ago. What do you think?

Great spy flick streaming on Netflix....Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Best movie I've seen in a couple of years.....

https://www.gq.com/story/one-of-the-best-cold-war-spy-movies-is-streaming-on-netflix

The plot of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is dense and complex, but revolves around George Smiley (Gary Oldman in excellently frumpy form) being brought out of retirement to figure out who is the Soviet "mole" at the upper levels of "the Circus," aka the British intelligence agency. John Le Carré—who worked as a spy for the British Government before writing novels—loosely based the story on the real life KBG double agent Kim Philby. Smiley finds himself in a tangled web of paranoid schemers and bureaucratic infighting as he tries to figure out which spy is the double agent.

PSU could learn from Harvard

Larry Bacow, a Distinguished Eagle Scout who is “one of the most experienced and respected leaders in American higher education,” will be the next president of Harvard University.

Harvard announced the selection on Sunday, calling Bacow someone who has “the curiosity and keen intelligence of a scholar and teacher, the vision and steady hand of a seasoned leader of institutions, and the energetic commitment and buoyant stamina of a devoted marathoner.”

Sounds like an Eagle Scout to me.

Son of immigrants
Bacow is the son of an Eastern European refugee and an Auschwitz survivor. His parents came to this country with nothing and started a family in Pontiac, Mich.

They also enrolled their son in Scouting, and that proved beneficial. Bacow said his time as a Scout opened his eyes to the world beyond Michigan.

“If not for Scouting, I would not have had the opportunity to learn so many things and do so many things that continue to be important to me today,” Bacow said in 2010. “Whether or not it’s camping, skiing, sailing or swimming, it was through Scouting that I learned and was exposed to all of these things like so many of us are.”

Bacow earned Scouting’s highest honor on Sept. 26, 1966, as a member of Troop 7 in Pontiac.

A Distinguished Eagle Scout
On Aug. 21, 2002, the Boston-based Spirit of Adventure Council presented Bacow with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.

The award is presented to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated service to their profession and community for at least 25 years after becoming Eagles.

Bacow was president of Tufts University when he received the honor.

In 2010, the Mohegan Council invited Bacow to a celebration of BSA’s 100th anniversary. He told the crowd that the 12 points of the Scout Law have stayed with him, calling it “the cornerstone of effective leadership.”

When asked how he learned the skills necessary to be a university president, Bacow didn’t hestitate.

“The simple answer is that I learned to be a leader in Scouting,” he said.

Harvard’s next president
On July 1, Bacow will officially begin his new role.

The role of Harvard president has been around a century longer than the role of U.S. president. The first person in the job, Henry Dunster, served from 1640 to 1654.

“Those of us privileged to lead this university are invested with a precious trust,” Bacow said after his selection. “I promise to do everything within my power to prove worthy of it.”

OT: I went to see the Hostiles movie yesterday afternoon. (SPOILER ALERT)

Hostiles takes place in 1892, near the end of the Indian wars that raged after the end of the Civil War. Christian Bale places the main character, a Calvary Captain near retirement who has seen his fill of Indian wars. Wes Studi plays a Cheyenne Chief, who is escorted back to his home territory by Bale after being imprisoned for about 10 years.

It was a very good movie. I liked the message about old enemies coming around to understand, respect, and even die for each other. I also found it interesting that there were more than one type of hostile (American Indian, rogue Calvary trooper, hunters/trappers, and ranchers protecting the sovereignty of their property). It really made you understand how dangerous the west was at that time and how tough you had to be in order to survive. Great collection of actors, although the characters were not revealed in too much detail, save for Mrs. Quaid and Capt. Blocker.

Although much of the movie was great, I particularly appreciated the final scene, at the train station when Mrs. Quaid and Little Bear were leaving for Chicago. The drama was palpable. Neither Mrs. Quaid nor Capt. Blocker wanted to break down and beg the other to go with them or stay. It was not clear whether or not this was discussed and not agreed upon, or if it was just not discussed at all. I honestly couldn't tell whether I was just kicked in the gut by a mule, or if my heart was breaking. If I was a man more prone to crying, I'm sure I would have shed a tear or two. Then, Capt. Blocker turns around and casually walks towards the train as it departs the station. It would have been so much easier for Mrs. Quaid and Capt. Blocker (and Little Bear) to walk up to the train station arm in arm in that last scene... I'm glad that they made me suffer a little, because it made for a bigger payback in the end.

Should we be worried about Cenzo?

Hell no!!!

On balance a very solid match he just got caught. Similar to some of his very early matches last year. As well as shades of Bo vs MM in the finals, gut wrenching when it happens and we learn move on and the superior wrestler rises to the top. You cant throw everybody all the time especially a very strong bull. His positioning wasn't perfect and it appears the bull was simply able to over power and take advantage. My hat's off to Marinelli, he is super solid on defense and to be honest I think he will be more than a handful for Imar. I think VJ has much more offense, is far more athletic, and although quite strong, Marinelli is very strong, probably the strongest raw power in this weight class. Most had him as a maybe AA at the start of the season and he is clearly top 3 now with few able to deal with his strength and defense. His offense is suspect, so if you pick your shots well, ride and control I'll bet VJ wins by at least 4 consistently in.the future. Bummed...a little, worried...not.

Just as we want Harbaugh to stay at UM, hope Narduzzi (HE KNEW!) stays at Pitt forever

We know Narduzzi can't recruit worth a damn, but check out the below graphic on schools with the most players going to be participating in the NFL combine. Impressive list. Obviously those schools had talented players, yet ONLY one of those schools on the list had a losing record last year and did not make a bowl game. ONLY one. Care to guess which one? Narduzzi can't coach worth a damn either. Hope he stays at Pitt forever.

Today, or yesterday, depending on where you live, I lost my faithful friend and companion of 15

years.

He gave me unconditional love and loved everyone he came in contact with.

He was the type of friend who always came around wagging his tail and wanting to play and show affection.

His name was "Gold Rush" and he was a Golden Retriever.

I will miss him dearly.

He was a great dog.

Recruiting rankings pre-Internet

For those who tracked wrestling recruiting back in the days before the Internet explosion, online video and the proliferation of "national" tournaments, what were the main sources people used? I can't imagine there were many accurate sources of information 20, 30 or 40 years ago. I know for football I always bought a copy of Street & Smith's annual but it was pretty bad.
