OT: Pennsylvania's Potato Chip Culture....

Sort of ties into the convenience store thread (which is mentioned in this article - Sheetz and Wawa in particular) but eating lunch at my desk after hitting up the very excellent Taylor Gourmet hoagie shop near my work in DC (founded by two guys from Philly) I noticed they serve Herr's potato chips. I then sort of thought, 'Hm - how does one state have so many damn potato chip companies? Utz, Herr's, Wise, Snyders' of Berlin, Snyder's of Hanover....? As a kid, one of the best things about coming home to visit was that my grandmother would always have a huge bag of Snyder's of Berlin potato chips in the 'snack' closet and I loved them because I typically couldn't get them where my dad was stationed (Hawaii, Japan, North Carolina, South Carolina...).

Turns out there are a few reasons/theories for this potato chip haven in the Keystone State - some related to the convenience store culture, Pennsylvania Dutch, and Pennsylvanians appetite for snack foods. Pretty good read.....

Utz was featured in an episode of Mad Men too.

OT: Chinese company buys West Virginia....sorta

A Chinese firm is going to invest $87 billion over the next twenty years in West Virginia's oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Thats a HUGE amount of money. So is this a good thing? It will create thousands of good jobs, help thousands of people, in and around WV. It will also supply our country with a cheap supply of needed petrol-chemical products.

In November, Thrasher signed an $83.7 billion memorandum of understanding with a Chinese energy company that wants to take advantage of West Virginia’s vast supplies of Marcellus and Utica shale gas. Under the 20-year development deal, the Chinese would invest in infrastructure and plants to convert the byproducts of natural gas production for the production of petrochemicals....

....But, unlike the exploitation of West Virginia’s coal reserves over the past 150 years, the projects proposed under the China deal are intended to provide local infrastructure and create a local petrochemical industry.

“It is not a transfer of the resource,” Thrasher said, but “bricks and mortar” facilities to turn gas liquids into chemicals and other products.

So is this a good thing? It will create thousands of good jobs, help thousands of people, in and around WV. It will also supply our country with a cheap supply of much needed petrol-chemical products.

But can we trust the Chinese? Or will they ship all the products to China? Is it wise to give the Chinese have this much control over such a strategic industry?

Barkley at the NFL combine

the nfl combine starts on March 2nd. I’m wondering how big of a splash Barkley will make. He’s no longer our hidden gem, and his physical skills and athletic prowess are now known through the sports world. I’m wondering whether he’ll be able to trigger even more jaws to drop though.

I think if his PSU test numbers carry through he’ll be in the top 5 of RBs over the last decade for 40 yard dash and bench press, and suspect he does well in the vertical jump, broad jump, 3 cone, and shuttle events.

What are everyone’s predictions?

Top 5 favorite wrestlers to watch

Doesnt have to be your favorite wrestler but whose style you like and who you love to watch compete.
My list:

1) Jason Nolf- The Matrix. In my top 3 of all-time favorites to watch. Incredible from everywhere and you better not blink because you might miss something amazing! And he keeps getting better.

2) Zain Retherford-Such a different style then Nolf but no less entertaining. Such a terror on top. The meanest guy going on the mat and a great guy off the mat. Can’t wait to see him transition to freestyle full time and put a beating on the rest of the world.

3) Bryce Meridith-So good in all 3 positions. Not as mean as Zain on top but just about as effective. Super fun to watch on his feet because he attacks at a high pace. Attacking at that pace also opens him up to scrambles which he is one of the best in the country at. Super fun every time he is on the mat. Bonus for wrestling at U of Wyo where I myself wrestled for a bit.

4) Yianni Diakomihalis-Only a true freshman but boy can this kid wrestle. So technically sound but can also scramble with the best of them. His flexibility is off the charts. Love seeing him in the full splits while defending a leg attack. Loved the match between him and Meridith earlier this year and hope to see it again at nationals.

5) Seth Gross- one of the funkiest styles going because his defense is so good he doesn’t care if you get in on his legs. Allows him to attack at a high pace on his feet. Also one of the very best on top. He gets the first takedown and the match is over after a series of tilts. Doesn’t hurt you like Zain but puts points up at an extremely high rate. No one seems even close to him at 133 this year. He might bonus his way to a national title.

Love to hear who are your favorites to watch.

Scuffle Grades/Recap

125: C

Schnupp did pretty much what we all expected. He competes hard but he just isn't at a level where he can win consistently on the D1 level (yet). I really hope Teasdale can make 125 next year or that Teske is ready to go right away.

133: D

I think it's safe to see that we are all relatively disappointed with Keener's results at the Scuffle. He got manhandled by Harding who is a decent wrestler but not someone who you can get almost majored by and have any hope of finding the podium in March. He was similarly beaten by Nickell from CSUB who is also a qualifier type but not a top flight guy. Keener is a huge upgrade for dual meet purposes over Carpenter/Law last year, but as far as NCAAs are concerned, we might see a 1-2 point improvement at this weight class if we're lucky.

141: A- for Lee, no grade for Cortez

I have been critical of Cortez this year but I absolutely hate seeing him go down with an injury. He's a tough kid and I hope that his ankle injury isn't anything severe and he can be back on the mat ASAP. Having said that, based on what we saw this weekend from Lee combined with the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Cortez's health, I feel pretty confident that we are going to see Nick Lee in the lineup moving forward. The kid has a great motor and his neutral offense is excellent and diverse. His win over Alber impressed me and even though the finals match didn't end well, he looked great before the sequence that ended his tournament. I love that he is constantly attacking and that he doesn't seem to care if someone scores on him (similar to Nolf). I'm optimistic about this weight moving forward.

149: A

What can I say that hasn't been said 10,000 times? Zain is a legend. This field was not particularly challenging (although I would have liked to see him wrestle/maul Thomsen) and he treated it accordingly. Pure dominance is all he knows. I'm going to miss the hell out of watching him. Also, I thought Verkleeren wrestled well and could push Berge for the 149 spot next year.

157: A

Somehow Jason Nolf has found a way to up his game even further. I believe he has all pins and one tech so far this year, which is ludicrous. His patented Winn Dixie drape over jiu jitsu wizardry is just ridiculous. I actually felt kind of bad for Paul Fox when Nolf hit it a second time in their match because he just looked so helpless and confused. His lefty headlock in the finals match was absolutely filthy as well. Finesilver is no slouch but Nolf just savaged him. He is the pound for pound most exciting wrestler to hit the NCAA since David Taylor.

165: A-

The only reason that I am going A- instead of A is because of his quarterfinal match against the Drexel kid. He looked somewhat sluggish and uninspired for some reason, but excluding that match he absolutely wrecked everyone. His finals match against Steiert was a very dominating performance and he looks fully healthy and ready to defend his title. I love seeing him transition from feeding someone stone hips to an immediate counter attack. He doesn't look insanely impressive physically but damn he must be incredibly strong.

174: A-

Again, the argument could be made that he deserves an A but I thought his semifinal win against Bernstein of Navy was an uncharacteristically close match against a wrestler that Hall has dominated in the past. He was never in danger of losing but I would have loved to see a little bit more urgency and a little bit less contentment with a 4-0 win. He is clearly capable of a bit more than what he showed there. As far as his finals match with Kutler, he completely controlled it and even though it was also 4-0 (same as the Bernstein match), I felt he was more dominating. Kutler is clearly a tough customer but he couldn't muster up anything whatsoever.

184: A

Nickal was just doing what he does best all tournament. Got some great falls early on and then worked people from neutral and found a way to get major decisions at the end of matches. Can't wait for the Myles Martin matchup later this year as both guys (unsurprisingly) are looking awesome.

197: A+ for Rasheed, B- for Cassar

Rasheed might have just won himself the 197 spot after what I thought was the best individual performance of the tournament. His cradle is absolutely lethal and reminds me of how Ed Ruth used to just crunch guys up even though they knew it was coming. At minimum, I think he's earned a shot in a few upcoming duals. So glad he seems to be settling into 197 and I hope his knee is feeling good after this weekend.

As far as Cassar is concerned, the kid is just an enigma. When you watch him attack, he is so smooth and explosive and crisp is just makes you wonder why he isn't doing it more often. He clearly has a ton of potential but he also seems to lack awareness of match situations and it has cost him several times this year. I feel that he was screwed in the semifinal, but the match never should have been that close to begin with. He needs to attack in the first period and he needs to improve on the mat. I hope he figures out how to be consistent because he's clearly a talented kid and I think he could be a contributor for us.

285: C-/D+

I don't know what happened to Nevills this weekend. The Boykin match had me scratching my head and the the Butler match made me scratch it again. He looked bad on bottom, tame and slow from neutral, and solid but not great from top. I'm not going to jump to conclusions and sound the alarm just yet, but this was not an inspiring performance by any stretch and he is capable of much better. This hurts him a lot for seeding at NCAAs too because his win over Hall is unofficial and besides that his only other significant wins are over Kasper and Wood. Hope to see him get back on track.

Flo Coverage: A+

Cliff Fretwell had me cracking up talking about how they were paying him in breakfast vouchers and using phrases like "feeding him hip snacks". He might not be everyone's cup of tea but I find him entertaining, knowledgable, and hilarious. Mike Mal does a great job letting the action speak for itself and inserting actually insightful commentary. He doesn't just talk for the sake of it and I appreciate that. As always, Pyles did a good job on the play by play as well. The video was clean for me all tournament long and I had no issues with the broadcast.

Loyalty to What Cause? - Another Article

I wrote this today in anticipation of the midlands final, but spencer lee had to lose.............
Still thought it was worth posting. Enjoy.

Loyal to what cause?

College wrestling is, more than ever, a battlefield. Wrestlers enter the spotlight at increasingly young ages with those who excel becoming objects of obsession for many fans. It’s a joy to plot out your team’s optimal lineup, trying to figure out who slots in where to maximize their chances at a vaunted national team title. The bigger programs attract the best kids as the coaches put in legwork. Expectations run high for years before a wrestler even touches the mats. We knew who Mark hall was long before he donned the Penn State singlet. We wanted to be the ones in his corner as he followed in Cael’s footsteps, his hand raised as an undefeated four time national champion.

But battlefields are cutthroat and the rules of engagement aren’t always clear. Penn State has dominated the scene for years now and it’s rare that they don’t come up in recruiting rumors. When Nico Megaludis walked off the mat for the final time as a national champion, the first question on everyone’s lips was “who’s next?”

Penn State’s standards are so high, or at least those of its fans, that there were only a few names even in contention. Daton Fix was always going to go to Oklahoma State, but that didn’t stop posters from salivating at the thought of him with a white waistband. Nick Piccininni was at least from the east coast and had a respectable resume, but he didn’t quite fit the bill. Neither did someone like Tyler LaMont. For Penn State, there was only ever two options. Nick Suriano or Spencer Lee.

It never seemed to be much of a debate in Cael Sanderson’s mind. He camped out Nick’s house and rang the doorbell the moment the NCAA lifted the gates. He made an impassioned case to lure the soon to be undefeated four time state champ across the Delaware and it was obvious why. Nick lacked the freestyle pedigree of some of his peers, but it wasn’t a question of ability. He simply wasn’t committed to that discipline. When it came to folkstyle, Nick was a staunch wrestler who never gave an inch. He wasn’t about wasted movement or prolonged scrambles. He got in deep and finished shots with an efficiency rarely seen in an age where athletes have gotten so good at evading and defending aggression from neutral while worming their way into stalemate situations. A collective sigh went out when he signed on to become a Nittany Lion. Nick was not just excited to fill in as a true freshman, he was more than capable. It seemed that Penn State’s future at 125 was in good hands.

But what’s wrong with having your cake and eating it too? One didn’t have to look too far from Happy Valley to find another lightweight chasing his fourth state title. Spencer Lee was not just the best wrestler in Pennsylvania, he was a world champion who seemed to have no rivals in any country. He was an offensive dynamo who could score more ways than one could count. He could find and attack angles for quick takedowns as easily as he flips an unfavorable situation his way with a scramble. He was as close to the perfect wrestler as you could get at such a young age and, as a PA native, he should go to Penn State. It very well might have bordered on enlightenment, but fandoms rarely share realities with the athletes they follow. To us, it only made sense that he’d go to Penn State. In the end, he spurned us and chose Iowa.

Spencer Lee didn’t do anything wrong of course. He was simply making the decision that was best for him, but it was one which was bound to generate some animosity. And it did just that. Fans who had cheered for Spencer Lee during his high school years were far from forgiving when he lost to Austin DeSanto. His surgery was a major setback that furthered their doubt. There were a few who claimed he would never beat Suriano anyway. What if you told them that come December 2017, they would have been cheering for Spencer Lee in that very match?

Penn State had done nothing to earn Spencer Lee’s loyalty, but you couldn’t say the same for Nick Suriano. To say his move to Rutgers was a contentious one would be an understatement. Nick Suriano might as well have torn down Rec Hall, such was the impact of his departure. Many people forgot that him leaving Penn State was as respectable a decision as Spencer Lee’s choice of school. The university one attends is a major decision that can permeate through one's entire life be it academically or athletically. Both these young men were doing what they thought was best for their future's, not ours.

The way in which they did it was oh so different and it’s for that reason that Nick Suriano is looked at in such a poor light by Nittany Lion faithful. At one point he was meant to be Nico’s successor. At another, he was to be Spencer Lee’s teammate. Neither of those happened. He never even won a national championship in blue and white. It was as much of a betrayal as you can get in modern wrestling, one that could ultimately decide the national team race this year.

Nick Suriano and Spencer Lee are meeting for the first time at Midlands in a renewal of a rivalry which has not seen the light of days in years. They will wrestle backed by supporters from Rutgers and Iowa. Penn State will play no part. But for fans of Penn State who stood behind Suriano and Spencer Lee in the past, the rules of engagement have never been so unclear. The battle lines are muddied and loyalties have shifted so many times, it’s hard to know which side to stand on. When Nick Suriano chose Penn State, we thought we would always be cheering for him. When Spencer Lee chose Iowa we swore to always root against him. Now we’re forced to chose which horse is ours, when we don’t even have one in the race.

So beating arguably the most overranked team in the Top 25 warrants this headline?

From the fine people at ESPN:

"Ohio State sacks USC, Sam Darnold to cement case as best team to miss playoff"

Really??

USC OSU
1st downs 23 13
Total yards 413 277
Turnovers 4 1 (OSU 21pts off TOs)
TOP 34:56 25:04

(Plus a missed USC chipshot FG from 28 yds)

Over a team that had these "convincing" wins on their resume:

27-24 at home over 7-6 TX
28-27 at home over 7-6 UT
28-23 at home over 6-7 UCLA
31-28 vs 9-5 Stanford
