Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli Found Guilty

On three out of eight criminal counts of securities fraud. He could be sentenced to as many as 20 years. Hope he gets at least five years. He is one of the least sympathetic criminal defendants I have EVER seen. His arrogance in testifying before Congress was just over the top.

Michigan WR Grant Perry gets 12 mos probation for assault

Victim's statement

"The defendant's eyes were one thing I'll never forget. His wide eyes while he was saying foul words, licking his lips, hunching his shoulders over me and then grabbing the most personal part of my body with intent to make me feel as if I had no control over my body," she said. "I had to physically shove him off of me, causing him to stumble backwards. When he got up and went to rush back toward me a friend had to once again push him back. Both of us feared he'd continue to assault me.

"While my entire body was physically shaking, I was crying. The aggressive harassment continued. He was mocking my words as I described how I felt violated to my friends. He stared me down while I was waiting for police to arrive, with his wide eyes and taunting smile. All while his main concern was to get into the bar.

"Just as police were arriving, the defendant entered my personal space yet again. Puffing out his chest, rounding his shoulders, yelling in my face. His friends felt the need to apologize for him. But the defendant has never once shown remorse through this entire process. In fact, he denied his actions to the fullest extent. Upon agreeing to this plea deal he has claims to have simply pushed me out of his way." "

Possibly interesting development with Pitt DC Josh Conklin

Another twitter drama....

But if you follow this stuff, you'll see that players and coaches pay a lot of attention to their twitter profile pic, twitter bio, etc. When they are looking for a job, or are moving to another job, the profile pic changes, etc.

Pitt's DC Josh Conklin has stripped his account of anything identifying him with Pitt on his twitter account. Especially important because of recruiting, and the school's branding is front and center for every coach.

IF....IF....Pitt had to replace their DC at this late date, that would be sub-optimal. For them.

OT: What special/custom features on a house provide great benefit with little cost?

My wife and I are thinking about buying a lot and building a new house. I know that you can buy an existing house for less than you can build one, but my wife and I want to have the house the way we want, and if we have to remodel an existing house then it's going to cost as much as building new.

My question is what design features or "character" elements have you really appreciated/enjoyed, without spending a ton of money on them and/or had the best ROI? For example: adding an extra course of block in the basement foundation to have a full 8' ceiling in finished basement, having a single switch that turns on all exterior lights, etc.

Conversely, are there any design features or "character" elements that you felt were a waste of money?

If you had the chance to build your "forever" home, with money absolutely being an object, what would you do or not do?

FC/OT: Revisionist History's latest episode - a real tear jerker....

Called 'The King of Tears' and it's about how/why country music is so good at pulling on emotional heartstrings. Really good stuff. Nice counterpart to Gladwell's previous episode about 'genius' and how a song like Hallelujah represents how time plays a significant role in the production of genius.

Looks like Chambers is recruiting Boeheim's son

That would be interesting if he commits here and Boeheim comes to State College to watch him play

Because in addition to Gonzaga offering, Hart said he's had conversations about Boeheim's son with coaches from North Carolina State, Georgetown, Penn State, Northwestern and George Washington over the past few days.

OT: Was in jury selection for a murder trial yesterday.

Retrial after a hung jury. There were 91 of us in the pool; I was #70. Since my sister is a retired cop in our jurisdiction, I was fairly confident that I'd be waived by the defense, but as potential jurors kept being dismissed and the juror's numbers kept inching up, I started sweating. The final alternate juror's number: #69. (I've said on this board many times that I've lived a charmed life and then this happens.) I need to be in Bethany Beach today to sign a lease, so being called would have really complicated things.

Interesting thing: the judge heard about thirty people asking that they be waived from service due to the length of the trial and he approved not a single appeal. I'm glad I didn't get up and ask to be dismissed because I've got to be in Bethany Beach today; he would have laughed at me, probably.

It's big business, the criminal justice system.

Expats Thread - Traveling the World

Long time lurker. I really enjoyed the expats thread and thought many of you may enjoy our travel blog. After 14 years with the same company, I took a year off work to travel the World with my wife & kids. A lot of the Countries mentioned we'll be visiting. We're currently in Month # 2 and in France. After spending a month here, it is an amazing Country with so much diversity & the people are great. A visit to the Bretagne region (St Malo/LeMont St Michel/Cancale) is a must. But if I'm living permanently here, I'd probably choose somewhere near Provence/Gard. The weather, wine & cheeses are amazing and you're only an hour to the beaches & 2 hours to the Alps.

Here's the link to our blog & video link, Italy is up next! Looking forward to following PSU's 2017 run from the far side of the World!

For those that experienced a Penn State summer: What is your favorite summertime activity or memory?

Whether it was your pre-freshman year or you just stuck around to get into a coveted ESACT class, State College is lovely in summertime.

I have fond memories of
- daytime swimming at the Quarry,
- camping/caving at J4,
- late night swims in Stone Valley (Shaver's Creek).
