These concussion discussions got me thinking... what is your worst concussion story?

Here's mine... 12 years old playing hockey goalie on all star team with 14-16 year old kidson back home in Boston. I took a wicked slap shot right on the forehead that laid me out, half conscience. As coaches and trainer attended to me my dad came out of the stands and shuffled across ice to see how I was doing. My dad leaned down gently and whispered in my ear, "sew up your vagina and get back in net... you're embarrassing me".

True Story.

OT: netflix profit up 56%; paradigm shift now fully underway...

link

This is the flip side of the struggles of ESPN. Netflix can now spend $6 BILLION a year for content so they can afford more and more high quality original productions like "The Crown."

This is now probably an unstoppable virtuous cycle. Netflix and Amazon how have so much money, they can actually outspend the broadcast networks and get some of the best production companies. And a lot of the content producers would rather work for Netflix/Amazon anyway because they get more freedom to do what they want without worrying about week-to-week ratings.

I know our household is typical -- more eyeballs are spending more time streaming Netflix and Amazon, and that means less time available for conventional networks and cable. And once you get used to watching commercial free -- I don't know how you ever go back to 6 minutes of commercials every half hour. Painful!

It is really telling that Comcast just 3 years ago was trying to sabotage Netflix by throttling bandwidth. Now Comcast is building Netflix streaming into its cable box in hopes of holding on to Netflix viewers and discouraging them from viewing Netflix through a Roku or other non-Comcast devices.

Just as an observer of all this, it is fun to watch a paradigm shift happen so fast. It's been two years since HBO realized they could make more money divorcing themselves from cable and selling a stand-alone streaming service. ESPN may move to do the same thing as soon as their contracts allow, because it would be a way to recapture some of the viewers they are now losing.

And BTN can't be far behind. It's just a question of how long the BTN contracts are with cable systems and partners and whether partners are amenable to changing their arrangements. It might be 2 years away, it might be 5-7 years away, but standalone BTN streaming is coming.

What's been surprising to me is the quality of the Netflix/Amazon productions. Their ratio of hits to duds is really quite high. Right now they are BOTH beating HBO at its own game. HBO has made a lot of bad choices, and when Game of Thrones finishes, HBO will lose millions of subscribers because they haven't been able to develop hit content (Westworld wasn't a complete bust but it was certainly not what they were hoping for).

25 best beers of 2016

Per Philly.com

I'm not big on straying from my normal go to brews but some of these sound intriguing. Anyone tried them?

25. Mikkeller Santa’s Little Helper (10.9% ABV): A Belgian Strong Dark Ale, mildly spiced for the season, that goes down way too easy.

24. Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout(11.3%): Ahhh, sit back, relax and continually sip beer’s version of bourbon-barrel aged coffee.

23. Ommegang Shadow Brewer Imperial Stout (9.7%): Coffee, chocolate, roasted, bitter, intense. Or, in a word, masterful.

22. Forgotten Boardwalk The Captain’s Quarters Smoked Porter (5.7%): What, that’s not enough for you? OK, it’s aged in bourbon barrels.

21. Hoppin’ Frog Killer Vanilla Extraordinary IPA (7.5%): A vanilla IPA? They went there and pulled it off. One of the more unique tastes of the year.

20. Conshohocken Blood Money Blood Orange IPA (6.7%): Blood orange in a beer has rarely tasted so good. Strong flavor.

19. Stable 12 Wild West IPA (7.8%): The Phoenixville brewery outdid itself with this West Coast IPA. Tasty and bitter and all that is good about an IPA. Shout out to Conshohocken Brewing's Type A, another top-notch West Coast IPA.

18. Levante Sausage Lemonade (4.7%): For the love of God, what is this? The West Chester brewery has whipped up a Smoked Wheat brew that is all smoke up front (think inhaling an ash pit) and tart thereafter. It takes a sip or two to appreciate the complexity. And the folks at Levante won’t let you order a full one without tasting it first.

17. Flying Fish Exit 7 Pork Roll Porter(7.5%): Yep, pork roll. The Exit series resumed in earnest this year, and this is the best of '16’s bunch. Seemed to me that the more it warmed, the flavor of pork roll was present.

16. Singlecut Beersmiths Billy 18-Watt IPA (5%): The taste and the low ABV that Session IPAs should be all about. Side note: Any IPA by Singlecut could be substituted here. They’re that good.

15. Dogfish Head Beer for Breakfast Stout (7.4%): No time to eat breakfast? This stout is for you. Chances are something you eat for your first meal was used to brew this, including an acceptable use for scrapple.

14. Manayunk Brewing Co.'s Drain Pour(6.6%): This Brett Saison has a really sharp, distinct taste. But the definition of drain pour on the label is classic and puts this over the top.

13. Neshaminy Creek The Shape of Hops To Come (9.5%): Apollo, Simcoe, Citra, Newport, and Topaz hops combine for tour de force of tasty bitterness in this double IPA.

12. Cape May Brewing Co.'s Mop Water(7%): A spiced beer that looks like mop water, but tastes a lot better (no, I haven’t tasted mop water, just a guess on my part). This can really put you in the holiday spirit.

11. 10 Barrel Joe IPA (6.9%): Crisp taste, grassy smell, unfiltered. Great IPA.

10. Tired Hands Science Experiment No. 1 (6.1%): Tired Hands has been known to do some weird stuff so this “weird” IPA is brewed with oats, hopped, and has tastes of grapefruit and maybe a bit of rosemary. Different, but that’s what you expect from the Ardmore brewery.

9. Deschutes/Hair of the Dog Collab #2(14.3%): Deschutes’ Abyss and The Stoic are combined with Hair’s Fred and Doggie Claws to form a deep, dark, intense brew that gets your attention immediately. Kinda like that first punch in the face.

8. Avery Tweak (16%): Yeah, baby. Smell this, then sip – and I mean sip – this fantastic offering from a brewery that knows how to make high-alcohol, intense beers. This is not for the faint of heart.

7. Sly Fox 21st Anniversary Black IPA(6.7%): Pretty sure this is the Fox’s first Black IPA and it captures everything that’s good about the style. A critical malt backbone is eased by dry-hopping with four hops. Not bitter, but rather tropical/citrusy hops taste makes this a beer worthy of a celebration.

6. Levante Cloudy & Cumbersome(5.6%): A recent sampling of many of the West Chester brewery’s offerings found this to be the runaway best of a really fine batch of brews. The unfiltered appearance draws you in, but the hops flavors powered by Mosaic leave a pleasing taste on the palate.

5. Tuned Up Double IPA (9.5%): This Spring City brewery opened this year quietly, but the response to it has been exceptional. The untitled brew was its first DIPA, and it will be hard to top. A complex, dense IPA that will floor you in many ways, including the little bits of hops in the brew.

4. NoDa Brewing’s Hop Drop 'n’ Roll IPA(7.2%): I’m going with what the bartender who recommended this at the Charlotte airport said: “It’s the Heady Topper of the South and a man’s IPA.” A little strong on both points, but this was an incredible find. Almost makes you wish for a flight delay.

3. Troeg’s Nimble Giant (9%): The Hershey brewery’s best IPA to date (no, Nugget Nectar is not an IPA), this double explodes with fruity goodness. Exceptional beer.

2. Cape May Brewing Co.'s Coastal Evacuation (8%): An unfiltered double IPA that brings the best out of Centennial hops. The taste is so pure and delicious you have to force yourself to stop drinking it.

1. Lagunitas Born Yesterday Fresh Hop Pale Ale (7%): From the first sip of this unfiltered extremely fresh-tasting beer, I was blown away. Nothing was better this year. NOTHING. A runaway at No. 1.

Calling Lubrano...

...!!!

Anthony - When is someone affiliated with the University going to push back with this incessant PSU bashing by ESPN, etc.?

And when are we getting our bowl money back and fines reimbursed after PSU was cleared and sanctions expunged/wins restored? Could someone at PSU make a statement on the record and at least ask for what is rightfully ours?

As an Alumni, I have seen and heard enough. Is there not anyone who has a few stones to at least attempt to pushback and show we do not accept the narrative?!?

With the size and success of PSU, if it were up to me, I would leave the Big10 effective immediately. Not feasible? Financial implications? Could it possible be any worse than the free-for-all giveaways that we have seen the past 5 years?! My bet is that you would see an unprecedented response from Alums and the $$ would be quickly restored.

People respect others and institutions that defend themselves against false charges. Enough playing the patsy!

Help!

This just in: David Jones is still an IDIOT ....

his latest "article" is as DUMB as they come. It starts off by saying he is hearing from "readers". I'm guessing there are two or three of us ? I read his stuff for the comic relief and a further example of his hate for Joe Paterno/PSU (which will NEVER die). So in short, his "article" is enjoy this year because YOU will not get another year like this EVER !!!!!! especially next year.

Official PSU - USC Rose Bowl Game Thread

We Are ...

a little ticked we didn't get into the CFB, happy to be playing in Pasadena, out in huge numbers for the game, and ready to rumble to victory. Keith Jackson is in the house, so we have great memories of him calling PSU games and college football games, and great memories of Ki-Jana's run at the start of the 1995 Rose Bowl. This team has come so far since September, and we look forward to seeing a continuation of the improvement, and to celebrating a victory ...

Mikey McQ is my hero

OK, that wasn't fair... in truth, it was a kinda pathetic lure and not worthy... but I am finding it hard not to beat the crap outta people lately so I resorted to this canard.

Speaking with a local and the subject of how well psu is doing these days and the subject of Mikey boy pops up. My fellow floridian advises me that Mikey is his hero for his tell all novel and he deserves every dollar of compensation.

And rather than punch this witless dolt into tomorrowland... I inquire....

Let me see if i have this straight. A 25 something ATHLETE (and no matter how much we might parse jokes, QB's in Div 1 are athletes) who goes 6'5 and about 240 THINKS (because to this day he sure as shooting ain't sure) he is witnessing some kind of carnal goings on between an older guy and young child in a locker (with no one else aroud)... and this big fing baby is so upset by it that he DOES NOTHING. He leaves that child all alone to fend for himself against a monster. he DOES NOTHING.

He runs to Daddy and his doctor. They're so upset they blow him off. He goes to his coach and the coach, likely against his own best reasoning (and i have long thought Paterno was fearful that this could expose Mikey's psychological problems to outsiders) refers his situation to the guy who oversees the police department.

Who thinks it a bunch of BS.

But I digress. What Man at 6'5 240 allows a child to remain alone with a man perceived to be a pedophile? in the gdamned act?

And this POS is what you refer to as "your hero?"

to which my clueless acquaintance says I am not seeing the big picture.

To which I asked (not so nicely): "He's 6'5 240 and he leaves a child alone with a man he perceives is sexually abusing the child... I think I see the picture quite clearly. Your hero is a stinking coward."

End of pleasantries.
