Way OT - Why do we need time zones?

Wouldn't it be simpler if the whole world was on the same time? I get the idea that in China they might have sunrise at 6 pm for example, but you could just have different times for when things occur in different places. Plus all this daylight savings stuff doesn't make any sense. People will still get up when the sun rises and go to bed after it sets no matter what time you choose to call it. And of course you would never have to adjust your watch when you travel. Is this crazy?

Huh??

This is my first post, but I have been reading many wrestling boards for a couple of years. This was over on HR and I have no idea what it is talking about! Any clarification, or is it more "slush fund" and jealousy talking...
"Now, there are some real questions and loop holes with financial assistance being offered to wrestlers competing during a grey shirt or a red shirt year from an organization that supports "the sport," but only seems to support wrestlers that are competing for a certain school...cough cough...Penn State...cough cough. We will see the NCAA making some official policy regarding that situation quite soon. Penn State will not get in any trouble or be punished, but you can tell by Cael's comments that he is uncomfortable discussing the topic and even nervous. According to the current administrators what is going on is not against the rules. However, most people recognize that this is a loophole and the NCAA will be closing this loophole soon. I am surprised Iowa, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State's boosters aren't taking advantage while it is still open. Although, I understand why they delayed, as it could have easily be interpreted as a serious violation resulting in serious sanctions and devastate a program's future."

Nick S question...

Do you guys see Nick staying at 125 for the foreseeable future, or does he eventually bump to 133?

Extremely impressed with this kid. I couldn't believe how well put together he was first time I saw him on TV, much more muscular than I expected.

Being an tOSU fan, I know what it's like following a 125 who loves to lift and carry a lot of muscle... How much is Nick walking around at, is he cutting much at all now to make weight, if at all?

As a fan, I'm also asking if he could potentially out grow 125 because of the future, raw potential the 125 class has nationally the next couple years, in particular Spencer Lee and Daton Fix.

Do you guys for see Nick staying at 125 and battling it out with these two? Or do you see him bumping up to 133? I know you have Nick Lee waiting there at 133 too, if I'm not mistaken.

Lastly, will Nick take his redshirt? If I'm a PSU fan, and the potential of Nick moving up is there because he won't end up being a 125 for his entire career, I could selfishly (as an hypothetical fan of PSU and Nick) see Nick wrestling 125 the rest of this season and next, and then bumping up to 133 his junior year. Common sense tells me this would be his easiest path to being a multi time champ, as both Lee and Fix are likely to redshirt next season, and Tomasello, Clark etc will be graduated come Nick's 3rd year.

Now trust me I know it's not in Penn State's nor this kid's DNA to avoid or duck anybody, and I have no doubt in my mind Nick could still be a multi champ at 125 if he stays.

The easier path though is without question going to be at 133, so it's the reason I ask if PHYSICALLY... Is Nick a career 125 pounder?

Last thing I'd like to add is if he still plans on taking his redshirt, the ideal time to do so would probably be after next season, that is if he were to bump to 133 the next following. But those chances of he red shirting Nolf and Nickal's senior seasons are next to none. Could see both Nick and Hall taking their shirt the season after the Big 2 graduate?

I know as a fan of the sport overall, I would love and hope Nick remains a 125 his entire career, along with Lee and Fix, and I get to witness those battles for the years to come.

Sorry for the post length! Interested in hearing some of your guys feelings on it though...?

Nebraska Football

At the beginning of the season the BTN posed the question: which program reemerges sooner, Nebraska or PSU. The vote was unanimous: Nebraska! Gary Denardo lead the charge. He gave such nonsense as recruits now having a stipend for family travel to games played out in the middle of nowhere (Lincoln). As you know I've been one of Franklin's staunchest critics but at the time (August) I knew it was complete hogwash. Fast forward to today. Nebraska out recruits every team in the BT West and yet doesn't have a banner hanging from the rafters of Lucas Oil Field. It got humiliated by Tennessee. I believe 2017 if not, 2018, represents the death rattle for Nebraska football. If Riley doesn't turn it around soon it might be too big a hole from which to dig out. Especially given the emergence of Minnesota. The clock is ticking.

OT: "Bulletproof" coffee?

Recently heard of this on TOOS, and looked it up. 1-2 tablespoons of each unsalted butter and coconut oil in your morning coffee -- to give you boost of energy and focus. Supposedly good for your overall health as well.

Anyone ever try it?

I tried it for the first time this morning. Really did seem to work. Definitely good energy, and I stayed much more focused on my work than usual. Hope this is legit and not just a placebo effect.

If anyone else has tried it and has any feedback, I'd love to hear about it.

TIA

OT: Be honest...what cable shows (not dramas) do you watch and why...

Fess up...

* How It's Made - when nothing else is on, this is on. Reminds me of the old PCN shows.
* Street Science - Great, though dumbed down a bit sometimes.
* Outrageous Acts of Science - Very good. Smart people splainin' stuff.
* Gold Rush - I only watch to see Todd Hoffman fail and Tony Beets succeed. What happened to Parker's hot Australian GF?
* Barnwood Builders - Nothing not to love about this show.
* Moonshiners - Not as good w/ Tickle on the probation and all. Plus they're brewing water. Still some decent nutcase characters.
* Oak Island - I don't know why I watch. If they found the Holy Grail, I would have heard about it.
* Joe Kenda - I like his rug. And I know a guy that looks just like young Joe Kenda - who I call young Joe Kenda of course.
* Wheeler Dealers - Premise of the show makes no sense from a $$ standpoint, but they do a nice job on the cars. Plus they did a CJ7 one time.
* Overhaulin' - Chip Foose is a force of nature. Watching him draw a design is humbling.
* Good Eats - The only cooking show I look for (other than Giada of course). He's the best.

OT: suggestions for low maintenance vegetable for "raised bed" type garden

I've had trouble with maintaining the weeds in a large traditional garden, but am told that container gardens are much easier to keep up with. I'm thinking tomatoes, zucchini, and strawberries. Do any of you have any specific suggestions for vegetables that are low maintenance or that grow particularly well in container gardens? Thanks in advance!

Actually, while still considering the "container" solution, what I should have asked for is "raised bed". I want to build a couple of small raised boxes out of cedar fencing and plant vegetables there.

OT: Commuting issues. Does this sound familiar?

I'm driving into work with my wife. I'm in the middle lane of a major artery into DC and the only vehicle in sight in front of me is a school bus around 70 yards ahead. The flashing yellow lights on the bus go on and I figure I'm too far back to gun it and beat the red flashers so I get off the gas and start coasting. (I'm a relaxed driver.) The red flashers go on and the STOP sign on the arm swings out and soon after I start braking, coming up slowly onto the bus, just coasting up. Jane: "Look out for the bus."

Thoughts?

The Witness (documentary about Kitty Genovese murder)

Maybe OT, maybe not, definitely spoilers -

Did anybody else watch this on PBS last night? Pretty interesting story about the 'facts' around this famous case, which was a bit before my time in 1964. The press reported 38 people watched her be murdered and did nothing and that became the story. It led to reforms in 911, whole entire branch of psychology/sociology and a 'Kitty Genovese effect' where bystanders do nothing to stop a crime.

Genovese's younger brother, after 50 years, decides to find out the truth of about the murder for (and the 38 bystanders) for some closure and finds that just about the only thing reported in the story that was true is that she was murdered. They can't even get the bystander number right as some places report it as 37 witnesses and some it's 39. And then he tracks down a few of the surviving ones and finds that most heard screams, but didn't see anything (only 5 people saw enough to testify). One guys yells out the window and stops the initial attack. One guy says he called the police and they hung up on him saying they've already been called. (It's not impossible that was an invented memory to help cope but the interviews are interesting regardless). One woman who only heard the screams is flabbergasted when he tells her she could be one of the 38, and she denies her mother woke up at all and she is also part of it. And finally her neighbor and friend came down to the entrance to the building and held her while she died (this one is most important to her brother who spent all that time thinking she died alone because that's what was reported).

A bizarre counterpoint is when he meets the minister son of the killer who says he's spent his whole life under the impression she was part of the Genovese crime family and he was afraid to meet the brother (he's a wheelchair due to being wounded in Vietnam). He also says he thinks the case's extreme notoriety meant his father spent his life in prison when otherwise he would been released at some point.

I searched Genovese to see if anyone had seen this previously and got a lot results about the Kitty Genovese from TSM, and even a post where ChiTown mentions the aforementioned affect and posted a video that repeats a lot of the reported facts about the case. Just shows how much the initial report had become accepted as truth.

!Warning! At one point they are talking about research that resulted from the incident and some kind of paper mentioning Paterno and Kitty Genovese in the title flashes on screen for a split second. If that's the kind of thing that results in one being irrationally mad probably best to just skip it.
