OT: slow day for non-golfers: What quotes mean a lot to you?

I have this in my e-mail signature:
“The biggest hindrance to learning is fear of showing one’s self a fool,” from William Least-Heat Moon’s “Blue Highways.”

I really took that quote to heart while in graduate school. Every time I visited my advisor I would pause outside his door and say to myself, “Now, Jim, don’t be afraid of sounding like an idiot,” and then I’d knock. My advisor’s own advisor is a quite renowned mathematician, and I once asked my advisor what sort of relationship he had with him and he replied, “Oh, I was convinced he thought I was an idiot.” Boy, you can't imagine how much that helped my state of mind.

ot any SC residents know George Etzweiler? Cool story, now in a film short

you can see at the Banff film fest. They have alot of short films on outdoorsy type of things, which I found really interesting.
George is like 97 and runs the Mt Washington race every year in memory of his wife Mary.
The film is called 'For the love of Mary'.

the film fest is in Pittsburgh April 5,6,7
and in SC April 12, 13.

They had a 20 something girl climbing some rocks at 5.15 in France(?)
I really enjoyed it.

OT - Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos

Has anyone else read Bad Blood or watched the 20-20 show about Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos? And tonight HBO is airing their own TV movie about this fraudulent psychopath. It’s amazing the lengths she went to raise capital and market herself and her faulty technology to the world all the while obsessed with wanting to be the next Steve Jobs. If anyone is interested you should start with the book written by John Carryrou, a WSJ reporter, and DVR the TV shows. She is smart but in all the wrong ways and the worst boss you could ever imagine just in her early 20s. It’s crazy as could be but she became a billionaire on the basis of a good idea which unfortunately never worked. She needs to go to jail for a long time. People’s lives were at stake and she only cared about herself.

Refereeing and challenges

I think we can agree the refereeing and challenge reviews during nationals were less than satisfactory.

During one of the challenges, the refs were mic'd up. What was shocking was the conversation between them before they looked at the review. It went something like this:

Ref 1: Before we look, I want to know what you have.
Ref 2: I have no takedown.
Ref 1: That's what I have, too. Ok, let's go look at it.

What kind of process is that? "Let's figure out our story before we talk to the police".

If that conversation/review doesn't underscore the need for independent review in the challenge procedure, I don't know what can.

PSA: If you are over 50, please get yourself tested for age related macular degeneration

If you are 50 or over, please get yourself tested for age related macular degeneration (AMD). It is the leading cause of adult blindness. Despite this, optometrists routinely test for glaucoma but not AMD. Your ability to adjust from bright light to dark (dark adaptation) can be used as a strong predictor (90%) as much as 3 years before it can be diagnosed clinically. This isn’t a sales pitch, but someone I care about came to my work today to get tested and the results indicate early stage AMD. The good news is that he can find an optometrist who can test her and help slow down the progression. See link below for background on the disease.

Little bit of everything

First things first:
IMO PPG did an awesome job hosting. Couldn’t make the morning session Thursday and heard getting into the arena was a nightmare. Adjustments were made for Friday and everything went smoothly.

Didn’t hear one complaint of bad seats. Seen people in the upper level with binoculars, but also talked to some who said their seats were “pretty far up” but “enjoyed their seats and atmosphere and had no issues seeing.

Heard rumblings of Pittsburgh putting in the bid for 2023, hopefully that happens.

Short negative section:
Refs: as a whole the ncaa has to figure out some situations. Hands to the face, scramble/takedown situations, stalling. All need extreme clarification and make sure all refs are on the same page. I don’t care how certain situations are called as long as its consistent through out. Would be nice for a referee convention to take place with refs of all levels going. Then you could have wrestlers there and go through certain situations to be discussed and clarified.

It seemed like Penn State turned it down a notch once the title was locked up. Hall and Joseph both down in the third and seemed like the sense of urgency just wasn’t there. I give the wrestlers overall a C- grade for the finals. Cassar looked good, Nolf looked good for a period. Other than that prettt lackluster. Probably just spoiled seeing them rack up the points but regardless, didn’t seem like they were ready to go.

Next year:
A lot of factors are gonna go into next year. Who gets a 6th year? Does anyone transfer in? Here’s my way far out prediction,
125: Teske, a year in the room to get stronger, healthy, and in a good diet will pu dividends and an upgrade over Schnupp. Although I admire Schnupps grit and heart, I don’t think we see him start barring an injury or weight issue.
133: RBY, coming off his true frosh campaign as an All American. I think he makes great strides and really starts to use his quickness by finding and creating more offense.
141: Nick Lee, not much to say here. Great motor and work ethic will take him a long way, he continues to improve and a NC wouldn’t surprise me at all
149: Verk, could have made some noise this year at the tournament. But those things happen. With Nolf leaving and Berge going up, he slides and I think actually outscores Berges points this year.
157: Berge, I don’t think we’ve seen what he has to offer. I think the weight cut was extremely tough and left him with little energy. I think he’s an AA next year and most people will be generally surprised with how different he looks a weight class up.
165: Cenzo, coming off a tough loss but sometimes that’s a good thing to get refocused and rededicated. Going for 4x finals and 3x NC.

Here’s where it gets interesting;

174: Brooks, I think Hall redshirts. Everyone knows Aaron is good I think he competes for a NC right out of the gate
184: Shak, I think he gets his 6th year, has his ACL surgery which also eases his mind a little bit.
197: Hard to make a difinitive guess with Conel’s 6th year so unknown, but it’ll either be him or Beard. Conel can obviously win a NC and only gets better in our room, and I believe Beard has placed high in every tournament entered and don’t see any reason why a high AA at the least isn’t possible
285: Cassar, I think he gets another year ( actually two if he wanted ) which allows Nevills to RS. And man is heavyweight going to be a grind next year. A lot of young talent coming in, and I think it’ll be one of the, if not the funnest weights to play out over the course of the year.

In closing, great job to the entire team for yet another title. It speaks volumes when you can lock up a three day tournament in 2 days. Awesome experience getting to witness one of their championships, and look forward to them trying to defend the title yet again.

Ok time to come clean ...Ill be rooting for

Its saturday morning and my head hurts a little bit...

The National Championship is with the engraver .....

The Hodge trophy has renewed its lease ......

and

I have to admit tonight I will be rooting for the NJ kid to get his title.

Not happy as a fan how it all went down, but he did at one time put on the blue and white. Part of his life's journey as document and constantly replayed by Flo is as a lion. So he is my guy tonight.

Here is who I like in the finals;

125 Spencer - A Pa boy on loan so the hawks program stays relevant
133 NJ kid
141 Yanni - Want somone other than Dake to be the face of Cornell wrestling
149 Ash -- but if MJo gets it that would be great too. Great wrestling family the Jordans
184 Dean - what a great story for a NCAA champ brother coaching his lil bro to NCAA Championship

OT. Let me get this straight......

Hardened criminals, some who are incarcerated for life, can no longer go into the yard and light up but the Governor has sent the Lt. Governor out into the state to stick his finger in the air and see if it's OK to legalize "recreational" marijuana. What's wrong with this picture? I am a devout non smoker, having gone through countless car rides in the summer and having my fathers cigarette ash fly in my face in the back seat (He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 87, had a Whipple and passed away from it in 1991, my mother passed away about 2 years ago from COPD which was probably brought on by my fathers 3 pack of Pall Mell's a day habit). Does it make sense when the right hand is saying "Smoking is bad, we are trying to help you and make you quit" while the left hand is saying "Go ahead, light up"? If studies prove it has medicinal value and people want to go that way, fine. but overall, shouldn't we be trying to get people to quit smoking period?

2019 NCAAs -- Session 2 Thread

that can be followed on Track, or on FloArena. IMHO, the best place to follow the team race is on the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site (https://pennstatewrestlingclub.org).

Plans for the tournament: I expect to be able to provide PBP for Sessions 2, and 4. I'll provide PBP early in Session 3, but will have to leave before the session is completed. I'll not be around to provide PBP for Session 5. Lastly, while I'll create a Session 6 Thread, and post in it, by tradition I don't provide PBP during the finals.
