@McScoreley mentioned maybe J Lee-157 and A Facundo-165 earlier in a different thread.

Griffith ain't donning the blue and white next season. And it doesn't look like we're getting the 157 transfer. So I'll go with J. Lee as national runner up at 165 to Shane (he's too big to cut to 57), with a Facundo RS, and a Bearclaw at 57 (no dice, no dance unfortunately).

I mentioned that as a joke in reference to @GogglesPaizano reference of it coming up inevitably. I think it's a terrible idea tbh. Some might think that just because Joe is a bigger name than Barraclough and thus getting him into the lineup with Facundo is the best solution for points. I'd rather see how Barraclough looks up at 157 than how Joe looks down at 157. I don't have hopes of points at 157 next season. Barraclough will hang tough in duals against everyone, I can see him qualifying for Nationals even. Crazier things have happened in March than someone like Barraclough making the podium but obviously it would be asinine to make that prediction.

While having a strong lineup, we still have those holes that hurt against a team currently lacking any.
However hard he may work at it, it is an awful lot to expect Steen to come in right away and do much. And ‘49-‘65, still with questions, it seems to me.

Steen will be a NQ. Book it. He may even AA. The kid's a gamer, one you can never rule out. He has a chip on his shoulder.

I know we have a while but i wouldn’t mind seeing imran heard in the mix at 149/157. obviously 149 is pending if NLee makes a jump (sorry Hoosier) and if BB redshirts

Btw, who was the dude that said Spencer was going to transfer to the good guys?
Was it the shark named Bruce? Did he say PSU or just back to Pennsylvania?

FWIW, Boone has not actually transferred yet (as of 6/13):

I wonder if he is still a goner -- because his reason for leaving is now obsolete.

(Please do not use this as an excuse to re-litigate that reason.)
I'd love to get him back ... pretty big fan of him. Buddy of mine who follows Michigan wrestling religiously says kids like him often slip under the radar because Michigan has rules that prevents them from wrestling the best competition in folk and freestyle training isn't a big thing in Michigan so they don't show out well at the big Free events.

Obviously with how insane NCAA is, people not seeded to AA will every year with a good tournament but 125 returns every AA from last year, some really good wrestlers missed the podium (Teske, Camacho, Schroeder, Foley) and then Glory is coming back (hear Vito is going 133)

Arujau going up would mean Greg D. going 125. Not exactly a bargain there.

Right now Iowa still is the clear number one. Lions need a backup 125 to do well, need a non qualified 149 pounder to improve, need a brand new 157 pounder, and need big improvement at 167. Basically it's the same team plus Dean and minus Berge and Howard. Probably another year away.

I would pump the brakes (hard) on even suggesting that Steen may AA as a true freshman. In fact, slamming the brakes for a panic stop might be more appropriate.

Good Joe Lee IMO can score points at Nationals, even if he misses the podium, he can rack up some bonus on the backside of the bracket, that'll go a long way. Even 5 points from him would be huge.

Dean-197

All pedigree team. And very young.

@smalls103 initial rankings had PSU 131 and Iowa 114. This was by placement and no bonus. Few key changes:
1. Kemerer is coming back, that is +10.5 for Iowa. (I imagine he slots him 2nd and he had Kennedy 8th)
2. Berge and Dellavecchia has retired, PSU loses 6.5 points (he had him 7th) and Iowa gains 3.5 (Young was 8th, he is now 6th)
There obviously are other changes that are likely but for the sake of not overly complicating this, I won't update for those. After those 2 moves, Iowa is ahead 128 and PSU 124.5. This is giving us 4 champs, SVN/Kerkvliet 5th and Beard 8th and I think if we had all 4 champs repeat, we'd say it was a damn good tournament. Obviously repeating 4 will be hard but it's definitely fair to start our guys at the top as they are returning champs.

Few other thoughts:
1. RoHo is out for the year but he was 15th in the rankings so that's not much points. Bigger issue here is his potential to improve a ton and be a podium guy and it's a longer shot to find a podium guy with true freshman Steen.
2. Max Dean is out of 184 and to 197 for us, where to slot him?
3. He slotted Marinelli 5th. You can joke about that being higher than he's ever finished but obviously it's possible he wins the whole thing finally next year. Also, Mekhi Lewis and Shane Griffith is going up possibly (Mekhi I think is a sure thing) so he should start 3rd if anything. Once again, since nothing is official yet (like retirements or Kemerer returning) I'll keep this as is.
4. He also had ADS 5th (Seabass and Micic pushing him down but everything I've heard is Micic isn't coming back but possible Vito is going up .... so just slot Vito above ADS to keep points the same) I imagine Iowa fans would argue this ranking in a big way.
4. He didn't give Murin or Assad podium finishes and it's definitely possible they can.
5. Iowa won the bonus battle by 10 last year

I say all that to say this, obviously Iowa is the favorite next year, heavy favorite even. It's pretty telling because they scored 130 (not counting the Murin spike) this year with Bull missing the podium. We will need major improvements next year and then likely major overachievement at NCAAs and .... I couldn't be more excited. In the words of Bo Nickal "That's what we do" and if we can pull it off next year, many legendary stories are born (did Joe Lee break through mentally and get on the podium, did SVN or Bartlett break through all odds and make the finals? did Terrell Barraclough AA as like the 28th seed, opportunities are endless)

As we know by now, Cael has a plan and he's a master of executing the plan. When the plan is executed, we as fans are satisfied regardless of the final result as we saw this year.

What is good Joe Lee? Did he beat any all Americans last season? He clearly has potential but did he show it, and then slump?

Without any improvement at 149, 157, and 165, it's not possible, but even with improvements in all three, Iowa is the heavy favorite.

Good Joe Lee pinned All-American Zach Hartman in 0:21.
Yup .... 10-3 win over Wentzel also and a pin over Connor Flynn also. Say what you want about Hartman's AA (he only needed to beat the 28 then 21 seed to do it) but not many people are pinning him in 20 seconds.

At this point Iowa is fielding a team with more experience in college wrestling than perhaps the other top 5 teams combined. One would also like to think that last year was an anomaly specifically when it came to seeding. They follow the matrix and adjusted when necessary. But there was also limited matches for some wrestlers. But now we throw in tournaments like midlands, southern scuffle, CKLV, those guys that got seeded high due to a light and easy schedule may not be there.

You may not have even been saying they were, but of those I know Schroeder is not using the extra year.

I thought I read that Schroeder changed his mind and will be back. Hope it wasn't from Mineo :)
Edit: Schroeder did indeed change his mind....he will wrestle this year. June 15 FLO interview. His quote was "Do I want to move on with my life and be an adult or stay in college another year?" Slam Dunk. No where in the FLO interview did anyone ask if he will stay at 125.

Cadet World Champ Matt Ramos is in the Portal as of June 15. I HAVE THE BEST SOURCES!! Full disclosure.....I saw it on the Transfer Portal :) #integrity

You are right, but Maybe the kind of wrestling that had him pinning Hartman is exactly the kind of wrestling that got him in lots of trouble at NCAA. I do think Joe Lee can make a jump this year, but not if he is going into matches with the plan of pinning moves early and often. Hopefully he can get the endurance and pace of his brother and save those pinning combos for the last 30 seconds when its obvious he has broken his opponent. (a fan can Hope...)

Like it's been said, Cael got animated with Joe, VERY animated. Cael has gotten angry in his career but usually are refereeing (the infamous WTT 2017 chair throw and YOU ARE KILLING OUR SPORT) It was very out of character that it's at his own wrestler. It was pretty apparent at that point Cael had lost his patience with Joe and I venture a guess and say it's not simply because he's losing but because he's not following instructions that Cael has told him multiple times by that point.

"The pin is there now, but I'll wait until the last 30 sec" said no wrestler ever.

To be fair lots of elite wrestlers have said that. Am I wrong to think that Nolf often tried to get close to a tech fall before he started to try hard to pin people?
