2018 Rock and Roll HOF Nominees

the fan vote ended on Tuesday (12/5). The top 5 vote getters get 1 additional vote in the official voting. They were:

1. Bon Jovi
2. Moody Blues
3. Dire Straits
4. The Cars
5. Judas Priest

The inductees will be announced next Wednesday (12/13) at 7 am EST.

For those curious as to the rest of the fan voting, it went as follows:

6. The Zombies
7. Eurythmics
8. J. Geils Band
9. Depeche Mode
10. Nina Simone
11. Kate Bush
12. Radiohead
13. Rage Against The Machine
14. The MC5
15. LL Cool J
16. Sister Rosetta Tharpe
17. Link Wray
18. Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan
19. The Meters

For a second I thought this was the official induction list. I give the RRHOF more credit than the I do the fans - that's for sure.

Radiohead
Rage Against the Machine
Bon Jovi
Depeche Mode
Judas Priest
Kate Bush
The Cars
Dire Straits
Eurythmics
J. Geils Bank
LL Cool J
MC 5
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
Nina Simone
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Link Wray
The Zombies

Who you got?
Nina Simone? Rock & Roll?

Nina Simone? Rock & Roll?

Madonna is in so you're just going to have to let that go.

Meters were up before. not sure they get in, but they should.

LL Cool J is a lock.

Radiohead seems likely.

The Cars and Boni Jovi maybe?

Rage is an interesting one.

J Geils died just a few days after the induction last year so they missed their chance there.

Bon Jovi is a lock. They are the only nominee that will actually draw enough fans to fill the arena and get enough viewers when it airs on HBO.

They should stop the charade and change the name to The Music Hall of Fame. There are probably more inductees who never in their careers were considered rock and roll than those who were. Make it a hall for anyone involved in the music industry, and if you want to label, label in the bios.

I hope The Cars and the Moody Blues get in. Like Chris Squire after his passing, I hope Benjamin Orr and the Cars get in. He was a hell of a vocalist and bass player. The Cars first 2 albums were the soundtrack for every high school party I ever attended between 1979-1981.

The whole process is purely subjective.. What influence has Bon Jovi had on other bands and rock music? They were simply perhaps the most popular of the hair bands. Did they originate the glam rock or hair bands? I don't think so, especially when they were on the other coast. Were they the best hairband? I don't think so either. Did they popularize it? Nope. Motley Crue beat them to it and Quiet Riot beat Motley Crue, but the Crue brought the Sunset Stripe to the fore. So why would they get in? For taking metal into the pop sphere? Good grief. Then they are responsible for a lot of bad music.

I love this summary from LA Weekly.

Despite its tepid sound and the fact that it embraced every rock cliche in the book, Bon Jovi earned a massive following and churned out a seemingly never ending string of hits starting with "Runaway" in 1984.

I think you are being a little harsh.

I'll be there for you.
These five words I swear to you
When you breathe, I want to be the air for you
I'll be there for you

That's gold right there.

They will of course put in Radiohead because critics love them despite their mostly producing unlistenable nonsense.

I think both Bon Jovi and The Cars are deserving. I would not be upset with Moody Blues or Dire Straits at all. I don’t know enough about many of the candidates, but LL Cool J will get in. I agree with the previous poster who said so. I’m not a fan, but he’ll get in.

Maybe it's me but doesn't everybody eventually get in. I always felt it should be a place reserved for music icons. It has become a joke.

Yep!

Instrumentally theCars were fantastic... Elliot Easton is underappreciated and provided great riffs for a pop-act, Cars live stuff on Youtube is fun to watch because he is a rocker and tends to go off... . David Robinson is the balls on drums... Ben Orr was perfection... Never saw them live but I've heard the were such good musicians that their early concerts were often deemed as lame because they were so focussed on the music instead of the audience... All Mixed Up is a song i can never tire of :)

Moody Blues are in along with Nina Simone, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits and the Cars. Sister Rosetta Tharpe will be given an Early Influence award.

Bon Jovi I kind of expected based on the fan vote. The Cars,. Dire Straits, and the Moody Blues are all strong groups. I'm happy to see that Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are going in as well.

Seems the HOF leaned more toward the commercially successful groups/musicians in this year's class. That should lead to an entertaining induction ceremony concert.

Rolling Stone: Nina Simone, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits Lead Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Class

Rolling Stone: Bon Jovi on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Band's Future
(Appears that Tico Torres and David Bryan are hoping to play with Richie Sambora and Alex John at the induction ceremony)

Is it too early to start the discussion on who the Class of 2019 will/should be?

I know I’d like to see Boston, Foreigner, and The Doobie Brothers.
There are many more on this board who have more depth of knowledge and know the innovators of the business. I tend to know the commercially popular.

I would be happy to see Grand Funk Railroad get serious consideration. I grew up listening to them a bit.

I believe Boston first became eligible in 2001, Foreigner in 2002, The Doobie Brothers in 1996, and Grand Funk Railroad in 1994. I don't fully understand the HOF's processes, but bands that don't get in have a tendency to appear for a few years on the ballots, then are not on the ballots for several years, and then appear again. So there's hope for all of the bands you listed.

This list shows how lost the R&R HOF truly is when Emerson, Lake and Palmer can't even get a nomination. I think the hall invented fake news.

Having been there, the displays and relics they have far outweigh their "list" of HOF acts. It's worth checking out. I just dismiss their choice of inductees sometimes, much the same way I would the Hypesman Trophy winner.

They may yet make it. They were first eligible in 1996. As I said above, I don't fully understand the HOF's processes.

They aren't even the group/artist that has been eligible the longest, and is not yet in. Here's a list (not that I feel that all of them should be in; just providing this as info):

They might be waiting for Carl Palmer to leave us so no one can accept it? Of course they could induct Emerson, Lake, and Powell now because Cozy has been gone for nearly 20 years.

I agree with those and also wonder if Kenney Chesney gets in. He isn't rock and roll but has had more success than most of the nominees. I could also see Sheryl Crow getting in to balance out the boys club.

Thanks for the list. There are several bands never nominated that I would put in over a plethora of music acts already in. Aside from the prog bands on that list, always liked The Guess Who and Bad Company.
