2021 Olympic Trials Results and discussion thread

Ahh, now I see. Nick just had the good fortune to get a demoralized Yianni who didn't try. Got it. Thx for setting the record straight.
Go watch Yianni vs. McKee earlier. He obviously didn't care.

Look, Yianni's goal was not to be an NCAA champion: it was to be an Olympic champion. That dream just got crushed (until next Olympic cycle) by losing to Oliver. How do you think he feels? I'm not putting down Lee, by the way. Just warning that it might be a mistake to think that Lee is that superior to Yianni.

Why the heck would he wrestle that match if he didn’t care? He was pouting? He has no interest in making the national team? Silliness.

Why doesn't Yianni want to make the USA team after doing absolutely nothing but exclusively preparing for this specific Olympics for two entire years?

Would appear he didn't care much against JO, either. Just shut already.

By the terms of your half-baked hot take, you've not defended Yianni so much as damn him as an athlete who half-heartedly mailed it in when things didn't break his way. I don't buy it, and while I've seen him wrestle better than he wrestled this weekend, as was also the case with Zain, he was the same wrestler on the consi side as he was before he lost. Lee was just better.

You may also be projecting a wee bit too.

Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes the bear eats you.

But hey maybe Cornell's lawyers could get involved. I'm sure there is an off day provision in the rulebook they could use.

I am sure Nick Lee is disappointed too.....he only got third. I am sure he wanted to win. YD is a fantastic wrestler and an excellent ambassador of the sport. If he didn't want to wrestle, he could have MFF. He stepped on the mat so YD is the type of guy who is going to give it everything he has.

You aren't as good as you think you are when you win and you aren't as bad as you think you are when you loose. Some football coach used to say stuff like this......and he won 409 times.

Just going to paste these results from USAW for both last night and this morning

I think you have just described perfectly what will happen to AJ if he does move to heavyweight against the much bigger and heavier guys.

Is the Nolf match in this session or tonight? My pregnant wife needs me to go pick up food but I don't want to miss the match.😧

LOL this hit home, I kept telling my pregnant wife "I just care about one more match, only a little longer" for about 2 hours this morning waiting for Nolf's match.

I have yet to tell her there are matches tonight and I will be worthless again. I assume newborns will be fine with 48 hours of watching sports on TV, right?

Consolation question: Will we see Zain v Yianni in consolations? Third place “techically” makes the team and gets to travel as an alternate right? In this crazy year and Covid out there plus possibility of an injury during training...would not be unthinkable for an alternate or even the alternate alternate to still slide into the olympics. These consolation bouts are still meaning full.

Wrong.

JO or McKenna (the winner) gett to pick a training partner to travel with them.

JO will clearly take Yianni. No clue who McKenna would take, but I am sure it won't be Zain. Other wrestlers cannot stand him. The word 'punk' often comes up.

Does Zain need a change of scenery like Gilman? Seems to have hit a plateau 3 years ago. Might need a fresh approach.

I'd say Penn, but they already have McKenna. Maybe SERTC at VT?

Something needs to change.

He clearly has regressed. His only contribution to this year's National Team was to get pinned by a chump up in Canada which may cost the USA a spot at 65KG in the Olympics.

Does anyone know what happened to Kamel Bey? Him and G’Angelo Hancock were the up and coming stars in the US greco program not to long along. Haven’t seen his name recently and was hoping someone knew why he isn’t wrestling.

Your guy is in the finals, and you're still a dick. The word 'punk' often does come up.

WTF dude?

As a collegiate baseball pitcher high School football player high School wrestler, and recreational golfer who knows nothing about operating at the elite level I certainly had my good and bad days despite the preparation, times when I just didn't don't have it.

No matter the training, the diet, the the mental preparation, there are times when you're in the zone and times when it all doesn't come together and you're not in the zone.

Zane is training at the best room in the country bar none. I think Nick Lee coming off a national championship and was in the zone. The kid is amazing and in my wildest dreams I did would not have seen him taking out Zain in freestyle at this stage in his career.

I think Nick's on a high and Zain for whatever reason didn't seem to be as Zain like this weekend as most.

What about the last time he wrestled McKenna or his performances at Worlds or the choke job in Canada.

He definitely needs to change something.

What mats are on what services this finals session.

NBC Sports is showing all mats as 'upcoming events' at 7:30. Yesterday it was only ever the one (mat 2) that was on tv. So hoping I can stream each mat as needed tonight on their website.

It also might be a mistake to believe they will meet again in college wrestling...I think Nick is going to 149 and Yianni isn't.
