2021 World Championships

It sure looked like Cox had that push out before time was up. Need to see that replay. Nothing to lose by challenging.

Yeah, don’t stop for a breath against that guy. Isn’t it known?

Daton Duain Fix v Magomedov (Russia) for gold
  • Fix dancing around, gets the first passivity warning.
  • Magomedov is given two on a scramble but it didn't look like Fix gave up anything. They're saying exposure but US challenges.
  • Both wrestlers watching scoreboard replay.
  • Points erased, back to 0-0.
  • Fix put on the clock. Point Magomedov.
  • Fix ties with a step out.
  • Fix gets to a leg but time runs out before he can do anything with it. Fix up 1-1.
  • Fix in danger of getting hit for passivity again, but gets to a leg. And then Fix is put on the clock anyway.
  • Fix in deep on a single but great D from Magomedov, who gets two. 4-1. 1:14 remaining.
  • Fix looked for an inside trip, go-behind, but Magomedov had elite D.
  • Magomedov gets a leg and time runs out. Great showing from Fix but he has a rung to climb still. 4-1.

Not a single passivity call against Russia?

Not a single passivity call against Russia?
I'll have to rewatch, but from my first impression Magomedov was both taking ground and doing the attacking. Would have liked to see Fix try to get to his underhooks to control position more. He looked like he was more comfortable staying on the outside, but didn't have the attacks to make it happen from there.

Great tournament by Fix. The Russian was just too much of a defensive virtuoso. And Fix needed to get to the top position to work his magic.

If you are tuning in late. Upcoming medal matches:

MATCH 6 - KYLE DOUGLAS DAKE VS SLOVAKIA

MATCH 9 - DAVID MORRIS TAYLOR III VS YAZDANI

MATCH 11 - NICKOLAS EDWARD GWIAZDOWSKI VS AKGUL

They both got warnings, but no call against Magomedov. I feel like I've said this a thousand times, but FS passivity has little to with shots taken and everything to do with holding center. Fix danced around the entire match, int'l refs hit guys for that all the time. The only undeserved call against Fix was the last one, because he had become considerably more active by that point. Passivity wasn't the difference in the match, Magomedov was just a tier above Fix.

I'm having a hard time signing in under my AT&T account. "I'm sorry, we can't process your request at this time". Bastards......

Fix may have been able to win this with Derek’s magic water bottle potion. I jest - he had a great tournament, but there are levels.

Yes. And you’ll say it another 1,000 times because some posters here have zero reading skills and/or their brain can’t comprehend that freestyle passivity is not folkstyle stalling.

Dake up against Salkazanov (SVK)
  • Dake "ungrounds" Salkazanov for a step-out point.
  • Salkazanov warned for passivity.
  • Dake not all that active, Salkazanov pushes Dake out to go up 1-1.
  • Break.
  • Salkazanov tries a high-c, Dake spins out. Dake looks for a leg but bails out. Neither guy wants to commit.
  • Salkazanov gives up a step out point off a double. Down 2-1.
  • Dake gets behind looking body lock, settles for two. Up 3-2, 1:19 left.
  • Time running down, Dake gets to a leg, easily converts, then turns quickly for two more. 7-2.
  • Step-out in garbage time, 7-3, and that's how it'll end. Dake world champ at 74kg.
  • Dake does a lap with the American flag, seems more relieved than thrilled. Now he lets out a yell.

I agree and was referencing the last one where fix was more active. Guess it's something I have to get used to with free style. One thing that surprises me is that most guys with the call don't step it up they just accept they are giving up a point. They should be pushing like hell for thirty seconds

There are also subtleties to the way certain handfighting sequences are interpreted that can make it difficult. For example, Fix (like a lot of PSU guys actually) really likes that overcollar snap. When you snap an opponents hands off your head all the way to the mat, we see that as physical offensive wrestling. But international refs could very easily be interpreting that as "breaking contact" which is considered passive wrestling. When you combine that with the jab steps and circling in space, the officials may have easily seen Fix as being extremely passive in that match.

That's a really good point about the snapdown being perceived as passive because you're breaking contact. I hadn't thought of that but it's probably how they view it, despite that it serves numerous offensive purposes.

And I think this is the biggest thing that gets left out in the folkstyle v freestyle debate. There's a huge advantage in having a thorough understanding of the subtleties of the rules and I think we see that in tight matches. Good news is as our youngsters are starting to wrestle more freestyle earlier, that experience will pay dividends down the road regardless of what style they wrestle during the school year.

DT v Yazdani Part IV
  • Very Greco-liek start. Yazdani gets a step-out point.
  • DT warned for passivity.
  • Another stepout point for Yazdani, who has been the clear aggressor.
  • Break, DT down 2-0.
  • DT more active off the whistle.
  • Yazdani gets two, 4-0.
  • DT gets a leg, looking to trip, trips himself. Points given to Yazdani get white-paddled.
  • DT wraps up legs, converts. 4-2. Needs another one, :58 left.
  • DT on his heels, thinks body lock but it doesn't work, Yazdani gets another two in waning moments. 6-2. Great match, Yazdani having an emotional visionquest moment.

Credit to the Iranian coaches and Yazdani. Really smart match again and better executed than the Olympics. Dominated position with his underhook, but didn't force as much action as the first two matches. Accomplished two key things: avoided scrambles and kept DT off his legs. DT looked out of rhythm for most of the match and couldn't make it happen at the end this time.

It's hard to beat a fellow generational talent 4 straight times. Adjustments will be made and we'll see about next time. Maybe the greatest rivalry in recent memory?
