Wrestling 2022 NCAA Championships Results and Discussion threads

Anyone else find it fascinating that Psu is vs Gavin Hoffman (whom we kinda ran off) in the semis here tonight and it’s not even vs Michael Beard, I remember the Hoffmans dropping the season tix. Hope Gavin doesn’t find some crazy motivational level

He was a top recruit and always highly regarded. But this year is his first on the podium.

Nick beat him at the Scuffle a few years ago, something like 6-3. I'd expect something similar.
I am nervous about this one. Real looks like a terror this year. I hope nick is ready for him. Looks fast AND strong.

I think Beard wouldn't mind a little tag team action tonight, especially given the way he handled Hoffman last time.

Yea, to draw Gavin “f-in” Hoffman in a semi after escaping two matches Max could have easily lost seems like another blessing for lil Deaner, right? Someone looking out for Dean. It pays to stay tight with the Lord

It would be absolutely flabbergasting to anyone who has watched college wrestling for the last decade.
I've watched it for longer than you've been alive. I clearly stated it won't happen, but we do have 6 tough matches. First and foremost "writers" like you should read.

If the semis go chalk, at 7 points per win, I got 35-14. Kicking much of Mich into consis.

How many team points for winning finals? Big assumption, but I got confidence they can go 5 for 5 in the finals.

I also think Arujau will give Suri a heckuva battle tomm night, sorry I don’t answer to ur ?

Gee, that is something new and different. The kid should have been DQed for stalling in his match against Carr.
I couldn't agree more and when are they going to make Will Lewan wrestle? Generally, I feel the refs have left the stalling go more this year than in any of the past few years.

I have never understood making excruciatingly stupid comments and then “backing them up” by claiming some kind of expertise based on age. Shouldn’t you know better?

You also said it wouldn’t be a total shocker. Which, you’re entitled to speak for yourself, but that just isn’t true for the overwhelming majority of people. If Penn State went 0-6 it would be the number one story tonight among wrestling fans.

Wasn’t lost on me. Didn’t know what to say about it. Good for him, I guess, is the right thing to say. Wish him great luck for the rest of this tournament except in his first match tonight.

You have to consider placement points already awarded vs earned. Right now a semifinalist that loses the rest of his matches places 6th. So the team score reflects a 6th place finish for each semifinalist (which is 6 points) plus the three advancement points earned getting there plus any bonus.

A semifinalist that wins gets an advancement point and is guaranteed 2nd place. 2nd place is 12 team points, or 6 more than 6th place. That’s why it’s 7 team points to win in the semifinals.

A finalist can’t gain any advancement points, but first place is 16 team points vs 12 team points for second. So winning in the finals is 4 more team points Saturday night. Plus any bonus.

Hearing that Anthony Cassar will be guest corner coach tonight for Kerkvliet-Gable. Not to worry, he will have a very reflective gold chain around his neck.

wow cass and Parris go down.....

this tournament is so brutal and toug

Wow, Crusher. That was quite a revelation!

You know almost as little about wrestling as you do about football.
I said last week there would be a lot of upsets but then was reminded that happens every year. What I did mean is that there would be more than usual and I wasn't disappointed. I can't believe some of the matches we have seen and a ton of sv matches especially for Iowa.

I’d be totally shocked if that happened.

Told everyone last week watch out for Michigan and here they are
Watch out for what?

Wake me up tomorrow AM and let me know if you were right or wrong. I'm guessing you won't be around on this board to do so.

Today's the day. So far we're 6 for 6. Unless the bottom drops out on us tonight - which would defy history - this is ours for the taking.

I'm looking forward to revisiting a pre-tourney post by @El-Jefe that was right on the mark after the tourney finishes. He deserves a pat on the back for it in more ways than one.

NOT to be Mr. Negative. RBY DeSanto concerns me. This is DeSanto's last go around at RBY and I just hope that DeSanto doesn't go wacky.
Also if we get the wrong Ref will he ding RBY for stalling after DeSanto shoots??? Man am I negative :(

Sorry for this post. I didn't see a separate post discussing this topic.

Like my hs football coach used to say “To quote the great philosopher, Richard Flair, ‘to be the man, you gotta beat the man”

I know Gable is a huge favorite but did his quarterfinal match give you any hope for Kerk? It definitely gave me some. No major and he got taken down and Kerk should be the most athletic heavy Gable will face. Not a big chance but more than I thought at the start of the day

@El-Jefe - you were very prescient 5-6 years ago when you posited that a kid already nicknamed “Bull” in high school because of his punishing, straight—ahead style might have an issue becoming transcendent in college. Not a lot of new technique learned during his time in college

We might see a repeat with Patrick Kennedy and Paddy Gallagher - both bruisers at places not known for talent development at those weights per se
I said that? You remember things I said better than my mom did.

Anyway, Marinelli's problem this year wasn't a punishing, straight-ahead style -- his problem was being unable to create offense against a guy (Amine) who deliberately kept his distance and engaged very little. Marinelli was an entirely different wrestler one round earlier against McCoy, who made the mistake of wrestling him.

Can't remember who said this, but it's absolutely true: Cael's top wrestlers every year are incredibly consistent. Consistency from match to match is the key to the NCAA Tournament -- survive and advance.

We'll see about Kennedy. And we've already seen that Gallagher can be beaten with dynamic offense and immediate transition from takedown to swipes, or at least that's what Levi did.

At the risk of being made a fool in about 90 minutes, I’ve been impressed with ADS keeping himself in check…
It would not surprise me to see a different strategy from RBY this match. He was able to score a takedown with a double at the dual when the match was in doubt if I remember correctly- could he use a different offense if needed? DeSanto has been preparing for the same RBY he saw the last few matches- this last time would be the perfect situation to bring a different angle, if one exists.

Liked for the first 3 graphs.

Curious to see what I said before, that was worth remembering. (Other than a bunch of silly jokes.)
