2023 US Open

Arnold over Augustine 8-1. Closer than the score. Arnold hit a big 4 point head pinch right as Augustine's shot clock was expiring for 4+1+1(failed challenge) to open it up. From there he hit some nice overhook shucks on the edge for push outs.

Somebody really screwed up the seeding for this weight. Augustine won here last year. Should not have been the 15. Bummer we won't see Arnold-Barr.

Zack Ryder beats Adam Waters 6-1

A few great finals at the U17 level. At 60kg we have Jax Forrest vs Ben Davino and at 65kg it is Kollin Rath vs Beau Mantanona. 55kg is Anthony Knox vs Marcus Blaze. I think all 3 of those matches could go either way.

Arnold vs Welsh will be fun though. I know Welsh has beaten him before but how many times have they met up?

Think Arnold would beat Barr right now. Barr is gonna have trouble with anyone who has good defense so long as he doesn’t sort out his setups and hand fighting

I agree and said a while back he would be a really tough match up for Barr.

Could we allow Barr the chance to improve once he gets to state college or
Should he be a finished product now? This point being Beaten to death , lol
What part of "so long as he doesn't sort out his setups and hand fighting" didn't you understand?

Garvin-Mesenbrink should be fireworks.

Looking ahead, looks like Barr will have to go through Gaitan to place. That's one to watch.

Where does he compare to our guys at 149 and 157
Well SVN and Levi are both title threats as well. I think Shapiro is the best incoming freshman though and fits in perfectly at 149 with Yianni leaving. He wrestles a really fun style. Was U20 world champ last year. I love our guys and would favor them because I’m a homer but Shapiro is going to be great

This is very weird? Do you wanna search through the numerous comments where I’ve said repeatedly that I like Barr’s upside?

But right now we’re commenting on current matches, and it is currently a problem.

My bad, misread. Trying to play catch-up too fast , lots of great wrestling psu related to read about, my bad again man

Kasak 4-3 over Cornella.

Onto the finals vs. Illinois commit Kannon Webster, who beat Mendez 5-3. Webster is really good, Fargo JR champ, but beating Mendez is an upset.
Regarding Mendez… this is Casey Swiderski part 2 all over again.

If you would ask any college wrestling fan who showed out to be the better freshman prospect between Mendez or Swiderski this year after competing in their freshman seasons……Mendez would win in a landslide.

But less than a year ago he couldn’t figure Swiderski’s size and strength out.

There are weight classes for a reason and this is EXACTLY why you redshirt Mendez and give him a full year to grow into 141, vs sending him right out there next year. Similar to Zain’s path when he moved up after his freshman year.

You can be more skilled, and you can even more experienced than another guy.. but strength/weight differences typically trumps all, which again, is why weight classes exist in the first place.

While on the subject of Ohio State… how bout what Nic Bouzakis is doing to the 61kg weight class? He and his brother both are actually having tremendous tournaments.

And lastly…. Meyer Shapiro is a monster. Thank god you guys didn’t land him too.

Not to knock Bouzakis because he’s doing everything you’d ask but that bracket is disgustingly soft for a U20 US Open field.

Yup, size matters. It reminds me of this:

The Law of Gross Tonnage is an accepted nautical convention that when a sea-going vessel has the right-of-way as established by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (72 COLREGS), it should nonetheless give way when faced with a larger vessel. This law is regularly invoked in non-maritime situations, such as when a bicyclist with the right-of-way invokes the Law of Gross Tonnage to avoid the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that is about to cut them off.
The heavier vessel always has the right-of-way. There is no explicit directive in maritime regulations or law for the the Law of Gross Tonnage other than it is common sense that giving way and being alive is usually better than forcing one's right-of-way and being dead.

As for Mendez, I think he’ll be fine. But there is some concern that if he can’t horse guys around he becomes a lot more limited.

Casey also tore his labrum in his 6th match. He dropped a lot of matches with the one armed wrestling. He will probably redshirt this coming season and be back to form. Before his injury he started the year wrecking people except the razor thin loss to Real Woods.
