2024-25 PSU Lineup (The Dynasty Continues)

Maybe a bit premature.

Josh is incredible, but I want to see him against a larger bodied more elite 197. Beard is just a slight tier below that, and Barr passed with flying colors. He exceed my expectations there but the gameplan was executed flawlessly and the magic all happened in the 3rd period against a guy who is known to fade. Even the Marisola result was somewhat surprising in terms of margin of victory. Granted Connor is only a freshman in redshirt, but it's not like the pair aren't used to each others trucks

Any victory even a 1 pointer against Buchanan, Cardenas or Ferrari and I am with you. Elam maybe not as much, but the finals talk for Barr is better held off, probably until we get through Big 10s. The anticipation is palpable.
LOL Beard is pretty big! Flo says that about many PSU wrestlers!

I'll say about Barr what I said about Carter at about this point of his freshman year:

I think he could win nationals this year, but don't yet know that he will.

But nobody will want him in their draw.
AB and Carter have both stated that Josh is a future champion at PSU. I'm not sure about this year but that's a pretty good endorsement from two 4xrs.

Well it's certainly pretty fun watching Josh and Luke climb up the rankings, as had been the case with all of our 1st year hammers. There is a legit chance that by Big 10s Davis will be out lowest ranked wrestler.

Heck the year Bo and Jason started, flo had us ranked 5th in the team rankings to start the year. By Christmas the rest of the NCAA was saying a collective 'Oh shit'.

so Pyles has to see more of our 197 to call him an AA didn't he already beat 2 top guys how much more does he need!

Again: that's not what Pile said. Pile said he saw Barr as a top 4 guy, but was not yet ready to call him a finalist with all of the returning high placers.

Pile says/does enough things to crap on him, without having to fabricate reasons.

Saw the Cael interview from today, Said Sealey is now back from his injury and that he's good. Then said, "He's as advertised"...
I may be wrong but did anyone see a sly (albeit short and kind of uncharacteristic) grin from Cael at the 5:34 mark in the video with regards to Sealey being 'as advertised?' If there was a grin, I think Cael is excited about Joe. If I am wrong, then I am excited about see Joe soon.

I had that same exact thought. He definitely grinned when talking about how good Sealey was and a small grin for Cael basically equals a gushing of emotion for most people. I don’t know how he fits in, but I think that with the embarrassment of riches in our recruiting recently, some have relegated Sealey to almost an afterthought. Those who have done so are in for a big surprise.

Man, his introspection and ebullient personality just makes you want to see him NC in March.
The kind of guy we’d all want our daughter to marry and be father to our grandkids. A natty on or off the mantle doesn’t change that . . . though, selfishly, Beau getting one through the Mendez-Alirez gauntlet is my #1 wish in Philly, far more than Carter’s 5th, MM’s 1st, 10 AA’s, or a new points record. Not even close.

What's wrong with all five wishes happening?

Saw that too…. All the hypotheticals for lineup need adjusted now, we weren’t expecting a Cael grin when talking about Joe, reevaluate hahaha

This kind of thing makes you think what are the odds that they can actually shut out Iowa? Iowa is only really considered a "favorite" at 3 weights right now - 133, 157 (assuming Teemer is back), and 197. Who are the 3 "underdogs" for Penn State? Braeden Davis was a B1G champ and #1 seed at nationals last year as a true frosh. Tyler Kasak placed 3rd at nationals as a true frosh who came out of RS and moved up a weight. Josh Barr, the biggest "underdog" in the whole lineup for that match, is just 23-0 in his college career, including 9-0 this season with 2 top 10 wins and an 89% bonus rate. Those guys are the underdogs? The weaknesses in the lineup? It can happen. Obviously, everything has to go right in those three matches (and there are other weights like 149 that are closer to a toss-up where Iowa can win but aren't really favored...), but it is really possible this year. Ok St rolled out the red carpet for Bo and Jax and flew McCort down to Stillwater for a dual match. Penn State doesn't have to fly them anywhere. It's just a short limo ride from Johnstown to the BJC to watch Penn State curb stomp the #2 team in the country. LOL.

I’m a little worried about Beau this year. I don’t think he’s looked himself. No shade on him; he’s one of my favorites. I just think he’s not wrestling as well right now as I’ve seen him wrestle in years past. I think I had read there was some question about him returning. I really hope it’s not HEW.

I assure there are not many people on the planet who enjoy wrestling as much as Beau Bartlett enjoys wrestling.

I just don’t think anything much matters to him beyond matches against Mendez and then the postseason.

Thank you

Didn’t mean to sound so condescending. But yeah, if there’s one guy you don’t have to worry about with that it’s Beau Bartlett.

You didn’t at all. The thank you was sincere. Like I said, I had been worried about what I was seeing. It was good to have a reporter that talks with him say don’t worry.

Not sure what you're seeing. To me, Bartlett looks pretty much like the same guy we've seen the last couple seasons.

Glad you've recovered. Because I was a little worried that you were a little worried and I thought, damn, we may just end up worrying ourselves to death over this remarkable young man. I really hope it’s not HEB (Had enough blogging). ;)

I will do some research and see if there is a connection between anxiety and white claw

When Beau shoots he really has some wow factor. He is is fast as anyone on the team probably the fastest since RBY.

One 'problem' I see is that he neutral defense is really really great. I do think against most guys he wants them to shoot where even when in deep on a leg, Beau can turn the tables on then for 3 pretty consistently. Not so much a guy like Mendez, which indeed is one problem, as that mentality can become a habit forming.

Over the y years, I for one don't like to see such a talented kid in a 1-1 match in the 3rd which often then goes to SV, when against AA caliber opponents. Anything can happen there, especially the unplanned, but like it or not that is where he lives a lot of the time and his record is still pretty great. He is probably the most confident wrestler I have seen in SV, just another day at the office for Beau.

You can see his mentality shift against many far weaker opponents, where he is really aggressive. he can just play with them, and he is also a pinner. I wish he spent more time rolling around with Mitch to change his mentality.

As others have said, I see little difference this year, if anything he is stronger and a little more aggressive. Let's hope his work on rear standing and elsewhere gets him a Natty. He had it dead to rights last year and deserves it this year. What a great way to cap a career.

I just hope Beau is saving all his points for Nationals!

Ben's pretty much right all the time...
If it's not, it has to be close. When talking about national title chances, for PSU, the question is more often framed as who is standing in the way moreso than whether our guys are capable themselves because they all are capable under the right circumstances. In other words, I think the least likely to win nationals are Davis, Beau, and Kerk, but that's because of the presence of Crookham, Mendez, Alirez, and Steveson in their draws, not because they themselves are not capable (and we'll have to see about the conflicting reports on Crookham...). I can't ever remember a team in college wrestling that strong top to bottom.

Unbelievable what we are privileged to witness night in and night out. At this point, 8 guys could easily make the semifinals and PSU has like a 85% success rate in that round. The only two outside are Lilledahl and Davis and one or both could do it, too! NCAA championships could be a PSU dual meet vs. the best at each weight. Possibly the best team ever! And the cupboard is fully stocked…
