He's 19-0 in his college career with 14 bonus point victories, including all 5 this year with 1 top 10 and 3 top 30 on Wrestlestat. I was a little skeptical coming into this year, but he's quickly making a believer of me.Still skeptical? Receipts for dice: https://gopsusports.com/sports/wrestling/roster/player/shayne-van-nessA roster note:
I just noticed that Van Ness' bio on the official roster has been updated to state that he has already been granted his injury hardship waiver for last year and received a medical RS. I guess this is how they are handling it now - the NCAA can grant it immediately, and not at the end of eligibility?
I highly doubt they would post this on the official PSU roster without receiving a thumbs-up from the NCAA. And the fact that Shayne has already gone to the effort to get it leads me to believe he is planning to use all of his eligibility. Has this been discussed before?
2023-24 / INJURY REDSHIRT SEASON:
Season: Began the season with a 3-0 mark and a win in the NWCA All-Star Classic before an injury ended campaign...Received medical redshirt, maintaining sophomore eligibility heading into 2024-25 year, results count towards overall record.
Journeymen (11/12): Rolled to three wins, all by fall and all in the first period, at season opening event. Wrestled 6:34 of a possible 21:00 minutes. Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week (11/14). NWCA All-Star Classic (11/21): Rolled to a 5-1 win over #3 Kyle Parco of Arizona State in Rec Hall (exhibition/not an official result).

Buchanan majored Beard 12-1 on the backside of NCAAs. Barr has quite the run of matchups coming up with #13 Novak, #5 Little , #3 Elam or Sinclair, McDaniel, #18 Poznanski, #1 Buchanan, #2 Cardenas, #22 Geog, #11 Braunagel. Will be exciting to see how he fares as this is one of the hardest schedules any wrestler has. Then he will have to do it again at B10s.Still skeptical? In successive matches, Barr majored Connor Mirasola, Lucas Cochran and Michael Beard (only majored twice in his career previously by Trent Hidlay and Cardenas). C'mon, CP!

Every week Barr is going with Starocci, AB, Cael, Jake, probably Snyder. Not only is he drilling with those guys, they are fine tuning his technique so he can achieve success working against those guys.Still skeptical? This is a mischaracterization. Pile said he can see Barr as top 4 but isn't ready to call him a national finalist yet.Still skeptical? You have to feel just a little yucky right about now. This is a mischaracterization. Pile said he can see Barr as top 4 but isn't ready to call him a national finalist yet.
I think Barr can be a finalist, but that opinion is fair on the evidence. FIVE returnees have placed 4th or higher at NCAA 197: Ford Focus, Buchanan, Cardenas, Munoz, and Elam. (OK, 4 after Ferrari implodes.)
To make the NCAA finals, he will need to beat at least 1 of them, and possibly 2 in a row. Can he? Yes. Has he proven that? He has never faced any of them in folk or free.
If Elam is back from injury, then Barr will face both him and Little on 12/21. That's a better test of Barr's potential placement than a single match against Beard.
Now I need to go shower in bleach after defending Pile.
Seeing our middleweights starting to use the bow and arrow made me chuckle a little. I see Barr starting to use some of the "room knowledge" to his benefit as well. To me, Barr has the IT look early his freshman year similar to Nolf. I hope it goes the same way for Josh.Every week Barr is going with Starocci, AB, Cael, Jake, probably Snyder. Not only is he drilling with those guys, they are fine tuning his technique so he can achieve success working against those guys.
By the time he wrestles against the other studs in his weight class it has got to feel like a break.
I understand the reluctance to acknowledge what you see in small doses, experience generally teaches us to be skeptical of small sample sizes. At the same time, the sample size of young Penn State studs who have been in the room learning for a significant amount of time showing a high competitiveness early on is becoming a rather large sample size. Being comfortable with the idea Barr is already a legitimate title threat is nothing more than experience reaffirming what your eyes and history are telling you.
Agree,…at least we’ve progressed beyond the point where Willie wasn’t even ranking Josh in his Crystal ball rankings, so that’s progress. This is a mischaracterization. Pile said he can see Barr as top 4 but isn't ready to call him a national finalist yet.

Brake? No need for no stinkin brakes. Gas pedal to the floor.i like Zach's enthusiasm, but he thinks the football team will take the NC.
Young guys often forget where the brake is..

I certainly don’t have one.Old farts forget there is a gas pedal.
Sealey definitely gets lost in the shuffle. Dynamite on his feet, surfer dude vibes. Deadly comboSealey’s former club coach posted he could have started this year but decided to heal a lingering injury and is redshirting and taking the year off. Obviously that was just a confident coach talking as well.
Assuming it was 157 and he thought he could beat Kasak out. He wrestled 160 to 165 in HS but likely he wasn’t cutting.
Someone has to be the odd man out ultimately but none of these kids think it’s them.
Zach has already positioned both Luke and Connor Marisola as potential 4xers. He exhausts me, ... and Byers at times.i like Zach's enthusiasm, but he thinks the football team will take the NC.

Does taking the year off mean not with the team at all or just no competition? I would’ve liked to see him vs Kasak. I’ve been a huge Sealey guy for years and it does seem like he’s being lost in the shuffle a bit but I wouldn’t have counted him from making the lineup this year. Geez he beat Beard… #6. Great start but he’s got the B1G. Let’s see how that goes first.i like Zach's enthusiasm, but he thinks the football team will take the NC.

He should totally send one to Teemer for the holidays. If your Kasak why wouldn't you donate a "cow" to all your teamates around your weight class.
Maybe a bit premature.if Barr keeps this up good chance he is in the NCAA finals!
Bordeaux called Stsrroci when he was a Fr. He (and I) are convinced that he is Top of the bracket potential.Maybe a bit premature.
Josh is incredible, but I want to see him against a larger bodied more elite 197. Beard is just a slight tier below that, and Barr passed with flying colors. He exceed my expectations there but the gameplan was executed flawlessly and the magic all happened in the 3rd period against a guy who is known to fade. Even the Marisola result was somewhat surprising in terms of margin of victory. Granted Connor is only a freshman in redshirt, but it's not like the pair aren't used to each others trucks
Any victory even a 1 pointer against Buchanan, Cardenas or Ferrari and I am with you. Elam maybe not as much, but the finals talk for Barr is better held off, probably until we get through Big 10s. The anticipation is palpable.
He is definitely winning me over with every result, and I'm at the point where I will no longer be surprised at what he does, but I'm still mostly with Goggles. He's passed every test, but he still has several to pass before I say definitively that I think he will be in the finals this year. Remember, Cael will make him lose at least once somewhere, too, because he's petty about his undefeated record or something similarly stupid like that from the cesspool, right?Think about who he is going against every day in the room. I'm on board the hype train, too.
I'll say about Barr what I said about Carter at about this point of his freshman year:Maybe a bit premature.

And went undefeated in their RS year.Barr's recap of his time at PSU the first year is almost identical to Carter. Came in hyped up (Barr admitted he was cocky after HS) got destroyed, took a while to even get one takedown.
