2024 Olympic Trials match and discussion thread

Jax posted he made the national team. Do top 4 make it at some weights or do we think Gilman gave up his spot on the team

That HS kid Mirasola scored more takedowns in one match against Brooks then DT did in two matches against Brooks.
Sounds cute, but if you don't think AB's entire tournament was focused on DT you're kidding yourself. Totally different level of activity.

2024: Undefeated regular season, Big Ten Champion, Big Ten Wrestler of the Year, NCAA Champion, NCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler, Hodge Trophy... but I'm seeing that the Olympic Trials win was "lucky" or some kind of fluke?
Nothing lucky about it, he's incredible. I do think he benefitted from DT being a lot older but that's not an excuse, it's a fact.

I was thinking if David Taylor lost he might leave his shoes on the mat. Anyone else think that? I thought DT said that this would be his last year. What a great ambassador for USA and PSU wrestling.
24 hours ago he was considered the best P4P wrestler in the world, he ain't hanging them up after one bad day.

I will say that tonight was probably the best recruiting video for PSU since Bo Nickal's "That's what we do" moment. 8 of 12 finalists are NLWC trained and 4 of 6 winners are from their room. In addition they just produced a guy who was wrestling NCAAs a month ago who beat the best wrestler on the planet. Every top guy who was watching tonight knows that if you want to be in the mix for the Olympics you have to train in State College.

Great interview with Zain. He had told Coach Cody in November that he believed he was through competing. He didn't want to cut to 65 kg because his previous cut to 65 kg had been so hard on him. He had even toyed with competing at 74 kg. He said he had decided to move he and his family to NYC in January for work and not wrestle at the Trials (and I would assume finish wrestling completely) before he had a change of heart. When asked whether he would be competing at 65 or 70 kg after the Olympics, he wouldn't commit to what his future wrestling plans might be. My take is that this Olympics will be his final competition. He also mentioned how tough emotionally it was to wrestle Nick since they are like brothers. I am sure going to miss Zain when he finally decides to retire.

There are decent 7th grade boys that woupd be these girls. Its a joke men FS reduce to 6 wts and add this terrible womens sport. Stick to skating gymnastics and ribbon dancing
It is necessary. We have equestrian events, 42 different types of swimming events, tons of gymnastics events and only 6 men's freestyle wrestling weights at the Olympics because the viewers are there for the first 3 sports and not so much for wrestling. More women in wrestling means more eyeballs on wrestling and more exposure. It is the only untapped place to grow the sport and get it back to its rightful place as one of the original Olympic sports with 10 full weights.

C'mon man, just no. I generally like most of your wrestling takes on HR, but what's with the hate for women's wrestling? I think you're really missing out if you can't appreciate the performance that Helen, Amit, and Kennedy put on this weekend, to name just a few recent examples. Very high level stuff. If I were coaching now, I would use Helen's incredible technical proficiency as a key lesson and example, for boys or girls.

New this year: top 4 at every weight make the team.
So NLWC had Gilman, Retherford, Lee, Dake, Nolf, Mesenbrink, Brooks, Taylor, Snyder, and Kerk make the national team. That’s 10 out of 24. Beyond the obvious what’s available for the other guys as national team members.

Equestrian events are big TV draws?

The quality of women's wrestling across the board in these trials was incredible. I was never a huge fan before but I was impressed and enjoyed watching them. Greco not so much.

What a bullsh&t, sexist remark. Yeah, back in the kitchen. Right? Jesus, get a clue dude.

Just think, if it weren't for a technicality Aaron probably wouldn't have even been in the finals!
And a HS kid took Aaron down but DT couldn't! (And that's a compliment coming from a PSU Fan).

Willie is calling it the "Worst produced and scheduled trials". Strong words, but is he wrong? Some say Greco definitely needs to be separated, there was no easy way to track brackets and results, fans weren't engaged unless it was PSU, couldn't see scores or times from the seats, Jumbotron didn't display bouts, poor attendance, the session times sucked...

IDK about the rest of you but I am still emotionally conflicted over AB / DT. I am so happy for AB but devastated for DT. I really bought into the whole zen thing of a farm / family / wrestling. I really wanted to see DT balance it all and maintain whatever it was that made him Olympic and World champ. Credit to AB who is fantastic, particularly when he is locked in. If I am not wrong DT barely beat Brooks for World qualification not too long ago.

It begs the question of what went wrong for DT? Brooks peaking; David slipping with age; lack of raw focus from DT now that his life is going full speed; did Brooks just train harder and was in more of a wrestling groove whereas DT was only room tested? Or maybe it is just familiarity and Brooks is DT's kryptonite and the only person on the planet who can beat him?

I hope David can recover from this and move on and that Brooks continues his upward trajectory and bring home a Gold in Paris.

I thought it was fine minus the awkward 57/65 match 2 being Saturday morning.
