African-American athletes threaten to strike at Mizzou

You really don't understand what I said. I used the word "mob rule" which has a particular meaning in discussions of governance. I was careful to delineate that from a simple mob.

As I said

"Not mob rule in terms of a riot, mind you, or anything like that."

You may want to look at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ochlocracy

..and no, I'd never heard that word before (and I thought I was well read). Learned something new today.

And yes, without any proof of bias other than your assertion, that *is* name calling. Or Monty Python's "Argument Clinic".
You also called them "racist". And "wanting the head" of the president. You start throwing loaded words like mob and racist around and comparing them to violent "off with your head" revolutionaries while wrapping yourself in the flag, then back away from the implications with sophistry.
Nice try. We know what you meant.

well again, if you've followed this story for a few weeks, the football team was the nuclear option. they stood up and supported the cause when all other forms of protest didn't seem to be moving the needle.
My question then would be what did/does "moving the needle" mean in this context? Wasn't the student group's minimum demand, even from the outset, the dismissal or resignation of the University President?. (I don't know, so I'm asking.) If so, that suggests a group more interested in capitulation than negotiation. It may well be that the invitations to dialogue on the part of the President, Chancellor and Board of Trustees were not issued until after the threat of a football team strike reared its head, but I could at least understand their prior unwillingness to respond if the demand was capitulation rather than negotiation.

Just gonna go ahead and put this right here...

College athletics were never meant to override the central purpose of the universities: education. Then again, leftism overrode that central purpose long ago.

Ben Shapiro, The Daily Wire News

Midnighter: I know that you merely posted this article, but LOL at this guy Shapiro. I went to Cal, about as "left wing" a university as you're gonna find. And our football team's lack of on field success or institutional support absolutely puts the lie to this Shapiro character's premise (that lefties have elevated intercollegiate athletics over education). Also, a lot of the schools that have the most successful football teams and the most notable football support are located in the South, where every single state is a red state. Nice try, Shapiro.

Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege

If that isn't a racist statement, I'm not sure what is. It may be true. But it's still racist.

The French Revolution did not start out violent. But it went there, eventually. That's why I said I was "uneasy".

But I see no reason to try to continue have a reasonable debate with some one who is not.

That's not correct. You need to remember we are coming into this midstream. The situation has been festering for quite awhile. I'm pretty sure that the students didn't call for the president's ouster until a meeting during which he told them something to the effect that any oppression is just in their heads. That was a pretty stupid thing to say.

Your words are loaded and your comparisons are selected to denigrate not just the arguments of the students but their very right to organize and protest peacefully. That is obvious. You are engaging in sophistry, not reasonable debate.

Just to clarify, from what little info I have seen....the demands were published in the school newspaper close to a month ago. The school president's comments(below), based on the article you posted, happened just prior to this weekend.

"I will give you an answer and I'm sure it will be a wrong answer," he said. The students pressed him and he eventually said: "Systematic oppression is because you don't believe that you have the equal opportunity for success."

So unless there was another meeting between the Prez n the protest group that wasn't mentioned prior to the publishing, then Lafayette is indeed correct, their original demand was for his ouster.

It's called dog whistling. He would have referred to them as Thugs too, but people are starting to catch on to that one.

This situation has been mitigated via non-violent methods.....written and spoken words, at least one hunger strike, at least one threatened boycott, and the gathering of significant political support.

I don't get what people want, if not non-violence.

This is America. Dissent is one of our oldest cultural traditions. We have just witnessed what is sure to become a case study of that tradition. Celebrate it. Don't criticize it.

Actually, Pinkel has just reneged on what he tweeted yesterday. Said he didn't want the President to resign. Said the only reason the team went on strike was so the Black activist that went on the hunger strike wouldn't die. Strange. Locker room apparently spit in half now and both black and white players "pi$$ed". That place is a real fuster cluck

Meanwhile, the Assistant Professor of mass media is on videotape asking for "muscle" so as to not allow the student newspaper to interview or videotape any of the "protesters". This after she went public begging for media attention before the football team went on strike.

You have to watch the entire video. She is the one at the end towards the 5 or 6 minute mark telling the student newspaper reporter he isn't allowed to be standing on what is obviously public property and yelling for some "muscle".

And his resignation won't change much of anything. Their grievances and demands will simply go more and more radical.

I bet if they were 9-0 there would be no issue.
If they were 9-0 and headed to the playoffs, they would have even more power over the hypocrites who run the universities and today answer only to the BOTs, pols, and campus developers and consider education and students secondary to their mission.

perhaps, but they aren't 9-0, they are what, 4-5 or something. It is noteworthy that the basketball team did not participate.

I wonder what type of quality leadership Mizzou will be able to attract now.

Please what??? Watch the presser. Pinkel said the support of his players had nothing to do with Wolf (the President of the University) losing his job. Said the intention of the protest wasn't to have anyone resign. Said the only reason he agreed to the protest was to support the concern of a couple of players that Jonathan Butler, the protester on the hunger strike, would die. Pinkel said he didn't get involved with the racial issue. He specifically said his support had nothing to do with that.

How long until people like Ziggy start calling the student body president a thug?

Edit: never mind. Ziggy already called the guy a terrorist

All I know is that I would never send my kid there. How would you like to have your daughter 1,000 miles away having to eat in a cafeteria with this crap going on? "You mess with one of us you mess with all of us??"

That place is an absolute mess. I think you have to turn the sound on the video icon to hear it.

Oh. Just checked Ziggy's Twitter feed and now realize why you're posting this asshattery.. Forgot that in addition to pretending Sandusky the Pedophile doesn't exist, his second hobby is pretending racism doesn't exist

Wait.... I link you to Pinkel's actual presser, and you go to Ziegler twitter????? o_O

OK. At least I know now you are a certifiable lunatic.

Too bad they weren't 10-0... then we'd have seen the depth of their resolve... and conversely, if they were 10-0 and made the threat, i'd imagine the resignation comes a lot faster.[damned if i'm not getting a penn state/texas 69 memory here]

but they got their way. let's see how it goes from here.

i also really want to hear what kind of package they cooked up for the prez to get him to resign... he clearly did not think it was the right thing to do. but the school blows $1M out their pipe if they don't show up for byu at arrowhead on sat... for all concerned, he left so they can keep recruiting minorities and maybe even have a winning program again. at the very least, they'll pull in some cool change on saturday.

1. I don't understand why those students would want to prevent a reporter from taking pictures in a public spot. What could they possibly have wanted to prevent from being filmed?

2. If there was anyone who was (and is) in an awkward, no-win situation there, it is Gary Pinkel. I would take anything he says with a big grain of salt. Anything he says on either side of this issue. LOL, the poor bastard.

The leaks are that Butler (the anarchist that was on the hunger strike) wasn't as skinny and malnourished as the protesters and players would have you and Pinkel believe. He had been slipped food the entire time. If the protesters would have allowed him to be filmed after Pinkel's press conference where Pinkel described him as being on his death bed, the protesters were afraid that the press would realize what a farce this whole hunger strike was.

I notice the cafeteria link I put up last night doesn't play on my iPad. It should work just fine on your desktops or laptops. It's certainly worth a look to see what some of the regular students that are there to get an actual education have to deal with.

Dude. That video is TERRIFYING! A black man is shouting! Scary, scary stuff! I miss the days when angry white people protested and RIOTED at universities in the 60's. But now that black people protest at them and raise their voice, it means you're afraid of your daughter's safety at university of Missouri? Yeah, it's obvious what you're insinuating, your dog whistles are so poorly conceived. So because students of color protest equal rights, they aren't there to get an education?

Don't lie. If a bunch of white students were to assault the BOT members coming out of a meeting you would applaud them. But you see an angry black man raise his voice and you're afraid for your daughter's safety?

I really haven't paid much attention to this. Funny, this morning I watch CNN, Fox and MSNBC and nobody seems to know exactly what the students are upset about (a series of random events, as one said) or what the president did or didn't do to be fired. Morning Joe has been especially harsh going around and asking everyone what happened and, despite doing an entire night's work, nobody knows. Now they are getting hammered for the "you can't take our pictures" comments.

Because, you know, at all times EVERY Penn Stater has stood steadfastly with the media in recent years.
NOBODY here has EVER been critical of Collegian reporters. EVAH !!! AMIRITE?
