Any update on Nolf??? Anyone with insider info?

Cael does not get to overly enthusiastic over too many things ever. Yes. My son wrestled his entire Sr. year with not only a sprain but a torn tendon in his left ankle. The trainer wrapped it every match and it helped A LOT....He did not want to miss his Sr. year and going to states....Made it but didn't fair to well....He just wanted to make it to Pa. states before he graduated....
Once you get out on the mat and the blood is flowing because you are so pumped up at times you don't even feel any pain when it's wrapped tight....

Anyone catch the media day with Cael today ? Thought I saw on twitter he made a comment that we’ll see Jason on Saturday . Again didn’t listen to it myself just saw some stuff on old reliable twitter

There was a guy, Nick something, who wrestled with his neck taped up and in a brace for almost an entire season. If it weren’t for the tape, his head would probably have fallen off. Nearly Headless Nick, he was called. :)

Watching it now...he said Jason is wrestling. Said he's been cleared to wrestle for a while. Answered question about how hard is it to stay in shape with that injury. Cael said its not hard. At least that is my understanding.

I just saw part of it on Facebook. Cael did say, "you'll see him on Saturday" (that's a direct quote if I'm not mistaken), but he didn't really say anything more than that regarding wrestling for the entire Big Ten tournament. Jason was later interviewed and he was asked, "how do you know that you'll be able to go on Saturday at Big Tens?" (I suspect the reporter thought he'd get an answer like, "I've been going full speed with Zain and Cenzo for a week" or something like that), and Jason said, "I didn't know that was necessarily going to happen" or something like that and my feed immediately went blank. Cael may have pulled the plug for all I know. ;) I've heard that he's likely not going, but I surely hope that he's nearly 100% and that he'll go because he's positively a joy to watch on the mat.

I just watched again. Very close to the top of the video, right before Cael said "you'll see him Saturday", he said, "he's doing well, he'll be wrestling Saturday". He also said and I quote "he's cleared and ready to go" and "he's been drilling for quite a while now".

Unless Cael's the zen master doublespeak, I don't know how else to take it other than Jason will wrestle Saturday.

The way Cael responded to one question about Nolf qualifying, “he’s qualified now” and “we learned that last year with suriano” - makes me think Nolf is not wrestling Saturday.

First post, few week long lurker.

In Nolf interview he claims to not be cleared yet...

He also clearly stated right at the end, "I didn't know that that was happening yet" when asked if he's wrestling on Saturday.

The bottom line is that neither Cael's interview or Jason's give me a definitive feeling that he is or is not going on Saturday, so it makes no sense to fret over it.

The only way I can interpret the interview is that Nolf will wrestle, in the Big Ten tournament, this year, on Saturday.

Would also be a case where Cael has Nolf wrestle some dead fish in the first round, to get a feel for his knee and the brace .... and then they MFF Nolf for the remainder of the tourney for precaution sake.

I thought he said he didn't know if he was cleared yet. Semantics

My hearing isn't the best, but I'm almost sure that the reporter asked him, "how do you know that you'll be able to go on Saturday?" and Nolf gave him a funny look and responded, "I didn't know that that was happening yet". Yes, semantics, but to me that sounds like nobody's told Jason if he is expected to wrestle and I have a hard time believing that. Like I said, who knows. If he doesn't go this weekend, I'll enjoy watching the rest of the team wrestle with the knowledge that he will go at nationals and will likely win another title.

Funny how we all watch the same things and come up with different interpretations..

My take from Cael is Nolf is going to wrestle without a doubt. Then when I watch Jason, I think he is just trying not to say anything one way or another (he didn't hear what Cael said at that point).

Byers on the Steve Jones show today:

Jason will wrestle at least one match. Jason is lobbying to wrestle the whole thing but Byers figures 50/50 for that to happen. He is not wrestling with a brace in practice but believes there will be one Saturday. No one in the room seems to avoid his knee, and Byers indicated he has seen the knee tested in practice.

Well, that's good news and really seems to be the more logical and likely option at this point. I'm on record as saying that I have a good source who indicated that Nolf likely wouldn't go this weekend, but I hedged my bets with the whole, "superior athlete, heals quickly, anything can happen" stuff at the end. ;)

I think this is right. It looked like Jason wasn't going to be one of the wrestlers available to the media today and when the reporters shanghai'd him in the hallway he wasn't sure how much he was allowed to say about the plans for this weekend.

Interesting. I listened to Cael, and I have the exact opposite interpretation.

Really? So...Cael quoted as saying
  • "you'll see him Saturday"
  • "he's doing well, he'll be wrestling Saturday"
  • "he's cleared and ready to go"
  • "he's been drilling for quite a while now"
...and you get he's not wrestling? Hmmm.

I would be in the camp of him wrestling 1 match only.

We really need Spyker to proclaim Nolf is definitely wrestling Saturday.....that would put all this uncertainty to rest ;)

In fairness, Cael was VERY wishy washy about whether Nolf was cleared. Admittedly, he may have simply not wished to discuss it, but his final answer was, "if he's wrestling on Saturday, then obviously he's cleared" and that could mean anything. Again, it's fun to prognosticate, but it surely isn't doing any of us any good because we're no more certain that he is or isn't even AFTER those interviews. I'm OK with that, we'll know soon enough.

Still a couple more days of inconclusive interpretation, raging speculation,a nd intense debate left. While Nolf is a HUGE story for the NCAA’s, there are a lot of other PSU guys I’m more focused on for the Big Ten tournament anyway. Can Kuhn find two wins and make the NCAA’s? Did Nick learn from his first go-around with McKenna? Will Keener earn his trip to nationals, or rely on an at-large selection? Will Joseph avenge his loss vs. Marinelli? How will Shakur respond now that he IS “the man?” Even with all of our studs, there is a lot to be learned at the B1G's.

I don't think Cael was wishy washy at all with respect to being cleared. IIRC, the reporter asked if Jason had been cleared and Cael said, you can't wrestle if you're not cleared (meaning in practice) which Cael said he has been practicing.

One of the funnest things of being a PSU fan is trying to figure out what Cael says...and what he doesn't say..lol

Any reason he would "get a feel for his knee" in B1G's and not at practice??? Really no use sending him out to do more than shake a hand.

Listened to all the interviews (Cael, the starters and Jason). Cael definitely gave the impression that Jason was wrestling on Saturday, but it could mean Jason will do what the Jersey guy did last year at B1Gs. I did think it was interesting that Jason was not interviewed with the other starters in the wrestling room. The reporters lucked out and found Jason and I think it caught Jason off guard. While Jason did not necessarily corroborate what Cael said, I think he made a decision to not make any news and acted like he wasn't in the know (we all suspect Jason is definitely in the know - we just haven't figured out what that is yet). I've given up trying to read between the lines; bottom line - we'll all know on Saturday.

I thought it was pretty clear....."He is wrestling on Saturday" No mention of weekend or Sunday. My take: He will definitely be out there for round one. After that depends on how Nolf, Coach and Drs. assess after round one. I am thrilled to have him healthy enough to give it a go.
