Bearclaw over J. Lee

I had a feeling this was the news @smalls103 was alluding to over the weekend. So be it. Certainly doesn't mean the spot is solidified--and we have all heard how tough Barraclough has been, and how hard he works.

I thought Hoosier Lion said this didn't happen?

Someone isn't correct.

Exactly, the competition is good for both wrestlers in the long run. If they're really close there will be more wrestle-offs... (especially this year with no "Open Tournaments" where each would have the opportunity to control their destiny on the mat).

If Bearclaw did win the spot, could this be one of those cases where Joe moves back to 165, and Cael preserves Facundo's Redshirt--for now?

I wonder if we'll see them split time/matches at the Collegiate Duals.

The problem with doing that, unfortunately, is that neither guy will get a chance to build a solid record prior to B1Gs, which leads to poor seeds at B1Gs, and then poor seeds or non-qual at NCAAs. A la Beau Bartlett.

That said, I'd like to point out that there ARE opportunities out there; Brian Borden is already at 10 matches after the opening week, between Clarion + Bearcat.

Not a bad idea but also not that much time to bump up and be a full sized 165 compared to the rest of the field

PSU has so far participated at the Clarion Open, Bearcat Open, and Journeyman Open in a year with no Open Tournaments.

Though the spot is Barraclough’s for now, I would imagine that this could be a very fluid situation that will constantly be monitored by coaches until a final determination is made next semester.

In the seventh and final wrestle off of the year, when I was a first year wrestler, I beat a state qualifier from the previous year. He was a senior and I was a sophomore. The coach suggested that I let him represent us at the regionals. I knew in my own mind that I had beaten him just because I knew how to. I also knew that he would go much further in the tournaments than I would, so I stepped aside.

I have to believe that the coaching staff will look at more than just one wrestle off to decide who finally represents Penn State at this weight class.

Mineo stated Joe was a monster in the first period, and most thought the domination would continue, but the claw raged back and was unrelenting. A reversal and a turn from bottom, a couple of turns and a ride out from top.

Oddly the wrestleoff occurred outdoors. A shot from the first period.

That's fair, but a major is convincingly, isn't it.
Depends on how it happens. I have no idea how the match went, but also no reason to believe Hoosier was being dishonest. So, I figured the outcome was unlikley to be in dispute, leaving the subjective “convincingly” part in play. Nothing more for me to conclude there.

No, that's true. I am rooting for Joe, so I was curious if there's more to it.

Joe Lee is such an airhead. Someone should tell him there's no push-out rule, and it does no good to throw an opponent out of bounds. 🧐

While we are at it, you have to give a huge high five to Terrell!!!

This is an accomplishment. Too few here saw this coming, and most assumed the slot was Joe's despite Terrell aqutting himself well last year.

It is a testament to the program, and hard work. I am hopeful this is an indication both wrestlers have grown as opposed to Joe having difficulty down a weight.

I look forward to to seeing the Claw display his game, hopefully tomorrow.

I suspect we will see both in various forums for the next 2 months before the die is cast.

What other opens are coming up where we might see some of our guys. Keystone Classic?

They always have.

I think Joe not wrestling last week shows he's nicked up, which might explain the wrestleoff result. That being said if it's the same injury from last year, that's pretty alarming.

1 + 1 + 1 = Zero. No surprise......this guy does his research and knows his stuff :)

PSU participated in these Open Tournaments as s team (like they have with SS and other Tournaments in past where starter wrestles attached)??? News to me.

Really, PSU wrestled as a team in all these Open Tournaments and had a 2nd wrestler participate at 157 unattached? News to me.

It's been almost 2 years since I told you guys that Barraclough was going to be a kid to be reckoned with.

Jefe,
Based on what I saw in person today, Busiello has to get by Barraclough before Verk, Gardner, Pipher. Terrell is getting his butt kicked daily by Lee, and is trying to emulate him. Nice model to follow. And I never saw him seem winded or tired after any matches. He was a highly ranked soccer player and has legs.

He looks like he is going to his senior prom. That's why if he can add some man strength, he has a much higher ceiling. He already has these characteristics.
1. High IQ, both mat IQ and smart smarts (Biomedical Engineering)
2. Great reactions and mat awareness.
3. High motor (he is always running back to the center)
4. Really good kid.
If he adds some strength, he could be a viable 157. But his window probably is probably 2022-2024. That level of strength increase may take more than 9 months to achieve.

I think Willie needs to bring me on board. The plan is coming together...

Your words.....".No open tournaments this year" No asterisk. No disclaimer. But by all means......wordsmith all you want. Moving the goalposts is clearly a specialty :)

Oh no! Here comes the "who said what when" parade again! 😬 Don't feed it!

If Joe didn't have a brother named Nick Lee, would you feel differently about these results based on what you have seen from Joe thus far at Penn State?
Obviously PSU fans are influenced by what Nick has done. That being said, I think it's more that Joe HAS shown flashes of his abilities but is the biggest headcase in the world.
