Buckeyes v Big Red

Yianni is my favorite non-PSU wrestler. So talented and just an absolute winner. Seems like a great kid as well. Nick Lee has looked great this year but I don’t think he matches up well with Yianni. Nick can get to his legs but I’m not sure he can finish. I would love to see it though especially in the NCAA finals!
I was thinking Nick Lee is the one who is the "bad match up" for YD, or McKenna.

No. Big Red is always Nebraska. I don't give a damn what they call themselves. Very few places touch the experience of Memorial Stadium. We're in the B1G. Ooc, we've never backed down from anyone. Hell, we can't even get Iowa to reciprocate. Cael is front and center going after teams to wrestle.
Big Red.

You have to respect TOSU scheduling ASU, NCS, and Big Red out of conference matches. Beats watching Buffalo when they can't even bring their starters. Just sayin.
No doubt and it would be an awesome dual season if PSU scheduled OOC opponents of Lehigh, ASU, NCST, Oklahoma St and Cornell, lots of interest. Problem is the prize is in March and not February.

I would rather have most likely 8 out of 9 national championships than trouncing good teams in a dual.

McKenna's only real weakness against elite wrestlers has always been in scrambles. No different vs Yanni. Joey had some good TD opportunities that turned into scrambles. Was a good match though and McKenna had a full gas tank imo.

Lastly, Yanni must have done a lot of gymnastics or something to be so flexible or as someone else put it, like Gumby. It's really something to see as well as his calmness out there.

...Cornell is no match for a good Big 10 team but they are the best Ivy League team...
... consider they even lost to Lehigh this year and Lehigh is having a down year - partly due to the injury bug...
Not that it would have mattered much, but Cornell has not had two All-Americans (Chavez at 165 and Darmstadt at 197) all year, and lost starter Koll (149) due to injury until two weeks ago and starter Stroker (157) due to injury in the Lehigh match. Even now, they have a shot at five AAs this year (four last year).

That was McKenna’s first match back after an injury, I would think that gassing is a little expected in that case
Zero gassing.

Yanni both more Gumby and more powerful. If not for his own mistake on the edge at 6-3 it would have been a wider gap.

Yanni, like many of the Cornell wrestlers, surrenders their lower legs too easily but Yanni is ridiculous in is ability to split and force the opponent into mistakes. Then is underestimated in his power. He zipped thru a blinding move for the 3rd takedown and I have to see video to know what he did but it caused a gym full of gasps.

On the 2nd TD he ripped into a fireman’s which McKenna countered and would have put others on their backs, but suspended for what seemed like an eternity but was still 4-5 seconds Yanni with his back bent backwards and McKenna draped over his shoulders...incredible hulked him back over In front of him. Whoa.

Honestly: Lee poses an impressive threat to Yanni, and the most in the class. Pace and similar gumbyness can bring Yanni down. Trouble is Lee is loose with some action and gives up occasional points he shouldn’t. Can do that against others. Not Yanni. I don’t think he will win a battle that requires powering thru moves. I think the end score for the winner is by 4-5 points, not 1 or 2. 8 times for Yanni. We only need one. Just ask MyMar how many you need.

Yanni will continue to frustrate McKenna. And I think more matches will bring more distance and an occasional close one. Think Sorenson Zain. Always Yanni.

They’ve been nearly as hurt as Lehigh. That injury mess in the middle of the lineup includes one who isn’t injured: Womack who remains one of the more distracted wrestlers I’ve seen.

3 AA in Vyto, Yanni and Max

Possible in Honis, Tucker. Draw need some favor. Tucker gives up little. Honis has to make his own breaks.

Womack would need the seas to part.

Cornell the original Big Red. Cornell 16th in nation in academics,Nebraska #129.
After Memorial Stadium there's not much there. Better wrestling program than Nebraska.

Yeah, Yianni's 3rd TD was crazy. Going from memory, but McKenna was in pretty deep on one leg, Yianni was doing a painful looking split with (I think) a whizzer. You're thinking the best possible outcome for Yianni would be a stalemate. After what seemed like several seconds in this position, Yianni grabs McKenna's ankle and somehow powers through from a seemingness powerless position, dumping McKenna like a bag of bricks. Just a "holy shit" type of move.

It was a very good match, but IMO not as close as the final score indicated. And no gassing by McKenna. It's simply that Yianni's has a unique combination of flexibility, strength, and scrambling ability that makes him very difficult to beat.

if you attend a game at memorial it's a good idea to wear red

My brother used to teach in lincoln. Could see 3/4 of the field from his office. Watched a game from there once. He wouldn’t let me get closer in my psu gear.

A request for the board in light of way too many Zane Rutherfords: He’s gonna be another all-time type talent, let’s at least learn to spell his first name right. Two i’s:
Yianni

Agree re Yianni. However, first you need to spell Zain's name correctly. I assume you meant to put one of these at the end of your post. :D:rolleyes:

Wasn't irony, so much as an example of how frustrating it is to see an all time great have his name misspelled. Hence "in light of way too many. . . ."

Just watched: Yianni is soooo smooth and savvy. I see some Dake, and some JO in him, for sure--but he's definitely one of those guys that is comfortable no matter what crazy position he's in. Credit to McKenna--he did well to make it look closer than it was, IMO.

Was the first TD the one where McKenna had the leg underneath? Yianni covered the hips--I always felt that should be enough--but have seen it called both ways when to my untrained eye it was the same situation.

Which was immediately after the announcer called him possibly the most technical wrestler in the country at any weight.

Couldn't have timed it any better.

McKenna clearly gassed against Lee, and apparently not against Yianni. One difference (other than another week post-injury) was that against Lee, McKenna had to wrestle 2nd, and last night he was the last bout. If, as some suggested, McKenna has quite a weight pull, last night would have given him more time to re-hydrate post weigh-in. I wonder if Ryan convinced Koll to agree to make the feature bout the last match (which at the same time may have helped McKenna's hydration.)

Yianni is the most flexible wrestler I can remember, and as others have started he can remain on the offensive in those situations better than anyone I have seen. He is Dake like in some respects but I wouldn't otherwise compare the two.

Much of the time Spencer is attacked with a single leg, he'll push it to the splits and work towards a stale mate very effectively.

Yianni frequently scores takedowns from that position, and he can bend in all directions with power to spare to turn the tables on what usually is an unsuspecting foe who thinks he is in control.

After a recent victory I swear I saw him mouth the words "I'm Gumby damn it"

Hydration help or not, Koll would have just as likely suggested it. He will move wrestlers up a weight for a good show. This was an easy decision.

My bad. I didn't pay attention to how it was spelled.
