Cornell/Ohio St

Mrs. Grey will be stopping by to have a word with you.

If you are going to sit half your starters don't schedule a big meet for the end of the year.

I suppose it could happen, but I will be shocked if Brands and Smith don't send their ones out tomorrow.

Well when it comes to Brands' it's likely half the team has serious injury of some kind...

With conferences 2 weeks away, it does make sense to prioritize your guys health. That being said, I think if you want to do that, it's better to do what Cael does and not schedule a team where there are marquee matchups that people want to watch (Buffalo, Clarion, Rider, types)

EDIT: @nitlion6 beat me to it.
Right. Schedule a team where your backups against their 1s is a better match anyway. LOL.

I'm fairly certain, Penn State and Minnesota will be sitting players in hockey and basketball tonight. That's precisely how stupid this sh&t is.

In our rush to be outraged, nobody has yet checked which of today's inactives might actually be injured.

We went thru this last week with Ryan too -- turns out some of last week's inactives had missed the week before.

If only we had a professional journalist on the board who is skilled at checking such things.

Nothing to see here. There are no problems at all in wrestling. None.

His OBGYN recommended it.

I was about to add - Anyone who expected Kharchla and Romero to wrestle in the Cornell dual hasn't been paying attention. Hoffman was also out last weekend.

Probably the biggest disappointment to me was the 174 bout (Foca vs Smith). Not aware that either is injured or has sat out of late.

Loew and Fernandes are out for the season. Cornella has missed the last few duals. No idea about Ungar, Yianni, or Foca. Match notes listed all three.

End of the regular season should be for training and healing, not gearing up to face a high end opponent.

No NCAA football player sits out regular season games. Not even 1st round draft picks worth millions more than wrestlers. You want to grow the sport? Wrestle. It's that fking simple. People don't travel and pays big bucks for this nonsense.
Maybe they are prioritizing the health of the athlete/wrestler today. You cannot compare football to wrestling. In football, lose one game and it can impact bowl games, playoffs, etc. In wrestling, you just have to qualify for NCAA's and you can be a National Champion.

I understand the frustration, we the fans want to see good competition. I coach high school track, there are meets where we are looking/anticipating good competition to test our kids and push them. It turns out the other schools in the meet have an Invitational on Saturday and send their JV. It sucks.

When you look at the current wrestling coaching staffs, filled with guys who wrestled lots of matches in their careers, they might just know something if they are intentionally reducing the number of matches they have their wrestlers wrestle. This is done mostly by reducing the number of tournaments they attend and Jimmy Kennedy addressed this.

That being said, as others have pointed out, these "big dual" meets should not be scheduled late in the season.

You might be correct with your thought, but I don't agree with that situation. Most teams have already cut back on matches and tournaments. Last time I check Cael was 159-0. That wasn't from dodging anyone or worried about injuries. Steel sharpens steel. Maybe because Penn State doesn't dodge a majority of there individual tough matches, prepares them better for the tournament.
The seeding at tournament (s) creates some of this situation. Maybe an adjustable tiered random draw for seeding might be something that would change the coaches outlook. For instance have a draw for every 2 seeds. Number 1 could get Number 2 seed, ect. This would throw some of the coaches concerns out the window. Is it fair? No. Would it be good to grow the sport? Maybe??

Agree in general but it won't make a high seed like Yianni wrestle in any specific dual.
Agree that there will be some who are unaffected by this change, but it will help for most of the matches. "Ducking" will carry a risk (as will an actual injury) of a poorer seed.

I understand the need to protect the health of the athlete. Especially someone battling an injury. We have a tough sport, the toughest imo.
Limiting matches should have an impact, but it gives way to even more gaming of the system.

More importantly, it's not a good product. This season, for me, feels like another covid year. I can't even imagine what the draw would be for a non-wrestling fan.

I know you guys all bought your tickets to see Bill Burr, but he's tired so tonight you guys are in for a treat... Welcome Iowa native Tom Arnold. No refunds.

I am all for growing the sport, that being said, do not schedule Ohio State-Cornell as the last dual of the season. As a coach, you are responsible for giving your athletes the best chance to succeed. Which means, if someone is nursing any kind of injury, you are going to hold them out of what is essentially a meaningless dual meet to give them the best chance to be successful in the post-season.

It sucks, but it makes sense.

Supposedly someone made the teams be less than forthright on their probables sheet - leading one to think more top guys were going than the reality

Agreed.

The funny thing about all of this is: we're all (or mostly) football fans too. Are there any good non-conference football games in November?

Of course not, because an unnecessary loss late in the year would torpedo a playoff bid, or doom the team to a lesser bowl.

So most conferences stay in-house in November. SEC has some out of conference, always against Little Sisters of the Poor.

Same incentive applies to wrestling, and we expect a different result.

We would be smarter consumers if we checked the product before buying. (In this case, the likely starters' availability.)

Some years ago a friend bought last-minute tickets to see Guns N Roses. The band took the stage 2 hrs late, was hammered, and Axl stormed off after 1 song. This surprised only the attendees.

(OK, that's a better metaphor for those who buy Flo before it finally fixes its streaming issues after all these years.)

I agree that the match should've not been last match of season. However if you coach avoiding the potential of injury, how many matches would a kid wrestle. Nolf got hurt because he didn't want to give up 2 points against an inferior opponent. Injuries are part of the sport. High school wrestlers would wrestle 50 matches a year and then another 50 in off season.

Do in conference losses in November help a playoff bid?

Funny story here.

A couple years ago my dad called me because he and my uncle wanted to buy tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Hershey Theater. The tickets were only $35 which was surprising as is but especially considering it was just a small venue for a stadium band. I was excited but said “hold on, let me look.”

Turns out the tickets were to see “Red Hot Chili Pipers”, a bagpipe tribute band.

My dad was not pleased when I broke the news to him.

I would definitely watch that, for the inherent stupidity. Not sure about $35 though.

El Vez, the Mexican Elvis impersonator, was great. And stupid.

My brother has been trying to get me to see Brown Sabbath. Maybe someday.

And folks bitch about players sitting out of bowl games. This is nonsense, and hurts the sport.
*The worst part was both teams bought 3 day passes to Disney World for every wrestler, parent and coach along with accommodations at the most luxurious resort there......spa, tennis, golf, heated indoor/outdoor pool. They all stayed in their rooms the entire 3 days and then flew home. One 4 year old complained that they could have stayed home for 3 days and had better wifi, their own room and more bathrooms :). They were told "You just don't get it" :)
*This completely made up analogy brought to you by a highly disgruntled Captain Obvious

My wife loved Dread Zeppelin back in the day, the band that played reggae style Zep covers with an Elvis impersonator lead singer. They were definitely entertaining. LOL.

Omg. I had an experience like that decades ago. Saw an ad for Modern Jazz Quartet. First time I took metro to Arlington, walked up Wilson boulevard to a hole in the wall. Paused, thought, it’s jazz, so it’s possible.

Opened the door and walked in to see the sign for tonight’s act. No John Lewis, no milt jackson, no Percy heath, no Connie jay. Instead, four old white guys performing as the “not so modern jazz quartet”.
