Dual meet thread: Binghamton @ PSU

Morelli looking pretty slick and relaxed getting those TDs. Granted this is an unranked guy (don't think he's even their starter) but I don't see him doing that last year against anyone.

285: Nevills finishes it with a pin over Calkins. Gets it in 3:57

That'll do it, as Penn State makes quick work of Binghamton, 46-0

Couldn't we have just sent him a Thank You card and maybe a nice fruit basket? We are only allowed 16 competition dates and I fail to see how this match benefits our team.

If one's agenda is to advance the sport of wrestling, then help fledgling programs...which Sanderson does every year...Rider, Utah Valley, etc. I'm sorry if you are not entertained but Cael Sanderson has higher goals.

How does this shellacking benefit Binghamton?

Hey guys, a little technological help, if you please. I see Sean Harp quoted ptomaselli (entry #60 in this thread), but on my screen, I see no commentary from SH whatsoever -- not within the quote box and not above or below it in SH's new post. Am I missing something, or possibly not doing something that will allow me to see something SH posted? Seems like I see this once or twice a day, and figure that's too often to make it some sort of error on the poster's behalf.

Sorry, Lobo. That instance actually was a screw up on my part. Are you able to see #61?

Puts them in an environment they probably aren't used to and gives their better guys a chance to wrestle top competition. Tom Ryan used to do it when he was at Hofstra and when he left for Ohio State they were a top 10 team.

Ryan is an outstanding coach (that tasted like vinegar) and recruiter. I believe better talent and coaching were the driving factors behind the Hofstra turnaround, not public humiliations.

That said, I see no benefit for the wrestlers, ours nor theirs. Unless we are giving them a % of the gate receipts or traveling to Binghamton next year, we're not helping their program.

P.S. Guys, I am not trolling or trying to be a Richard Cranium here. Knowing that Okie State's schedule was wide open this weekend, I'm struggling to wrap my head around "Why Binghamton?". Cheers. Harp out.

Dernlan was at PSU for a while, Cael has stated numerous times that he was instrumental in the transition when Cael came in, and he still maintains close relationships with many in PSU wrestling. This is what the wrestling community is about - relationships. If you don't see this is really significant in wrestling - you're not paying attention.

PSU is heading back to Binghamton next year. They will be able to host this event at their 4,500 seat Events Center. While the gates receipts (it will be sold out) are nice, they most likely pale in comparison to the bump in status that wrestling gets in Binghamton due to this. And I can tell you - first hand - that their ability to "sell" this event can give them credibility in recruiting. While it is a small thing in the decision of a recruit, it can help put them on the map with kids not familiar with Binghamton wrestling.

Not college, but a story similar to Ryan and Hofstra that might help. The HS that my kids went to was opened in 2002. The original (and current) coach was a native of the Lehigh Valley and used his connections to get an invite for the team to a very good holiday tournament (no Beast or Ironman, but in the next tier below at the time). Only one wrestler made it out of the 1st day and he lost immediately at the start of the 2nd day. Pretty embarrassing performance. They got another shot next year and did a bit better. Three years after the school opened, they won a AAA team title.

It certainly almost never happens that fast, but it's a pretty common theme with successful coaches.

Building a schedule is a lot more difficult than fans imagine.

Binghamton has a home and away with us. I, for one, am glad they are on the schedule. We almost had 14 competition dates this year, and as it is, only have 15.

Finals, holiday season and what have you. Who would people rather wrestle this weekend? I don't want to wrestle Pitt - irritating style. Time of the year, WVU or Edinboro maybe. I see nothing wrong with wrestling Binghamton.

Scheduling these types of teams is what helps in recruiting for a team like Binghamton. I'm sure anyone looking to be successful in college looks at it as a plus that their team wrestles a school like Penn State or OSU or any other big school. Having those type of teams on the schedule is what helped Ryan recruit at Hofstra. Listen to interviews from guys like Noel Thompson and his other guys he had in the room. It also helps bring fans in when you schedule them for home duals as someone else pointed out here

I'm thinking the poor guy at 149 isn't looking at as a plus. He was probably thinking a well timed sick day was in order :)

Just kidding, but the prospects of facing Zain have to be quite daunting for some of his overmatched opponents.

Ironhead was running through Nolf's career stats today: 41-2 record with 21 Pins, 14 Techs and 5 Majors (i.e., he's scored bonus points in 40 of 43 bouts).

Cael addressed scheduling SUNY Binghamton in his PSU Wrestling Weekly interview which can be found in the "Coach Slay" thread I started a couple of days. I won't bother paraphrasing, anybody who is interested can listen and then agree with him or not.

Thanks for your explanations, Fellas. Now that I know this is a home and away arrangement , it make sense. Binghamton will sell out when we come to town next year. Ducats.

However, I am still struggling with the concept that getting your ass kicked on the regular will elevate the stature of your program. By that rationale, Indiana and Purdue should have great wrestling programs, savvy?

I recall a lot of critical commentary when we started sending our pro basketball players to the Olympics; criticism in the US, mostly, the rest of the world appeared to welcome the opportunity to get their ass kicked and improve from the experience. Made for some ugly basketball (or pretty if you like uncontested dunks) for awhile, but then the rest of the world caught up after being exposed to the best (sure, there were other factors, such as increased popularity in those countries). Same principle here, I think, to some degree. If it's not immediately obvious how getting blown out helps, it is indicative of the program's aspirations to get climb the next rung. And I think that indicator is attractive to recruits in Binghamton's strata, because they're not thinking that they're going to get blown out, they're competitors and they look at it as an opportunity to go up against the best.

To very loosely paraphrase Dan Gable: Once you've faced PSU, everybody else this year will be easy.

More seriously: If you want your team to see where the bar is set, schedule PSU. We're the bar. It's humiliation only if you take the short-term view. If you take the long view, it's the process, it's motivation and determination.
