Illinois Match Thread

Shak gonna Shak. Sorry, just do not see points from him come March.
JuST dOnT SeE PoINts fRoM hIm CoMe MaRcH....settle down why don’t you formulate an opinion after big Tens when you see him wrestle a few more matches and not just his first match in 10 months and off an surgery.

Some positives about Shak:

• No knee brace, suggesting he and the staff are confident in his health

• He has prior experience at 197, understands his limitations in giving up some weight

• He managed his lungs very effectively in his season debut and did not gas in a tight match

• He did not take unnecessary risks or put his knee in bad positions

• He won, and did so via shut-out

• No knee brace

As we hit the meat of the schedule, the stage is well set for a steady, methodical progression to peak condition and performance 2 months from now, whereupon the Crossface Cradler can be unleashed full force. Patience, folks.

I've been told Cenzo didn't make weight (No Joke), and He is currently running Stadium Stairs (also No Joke).

Geez, only a coach without focus who cares nothing about duals would hold a wrestler accountable for missing weight . . .

Or, only a wrestler without focus who has no desire or ability to be a leader would hold himself accountable for missing weight . . .

Either way, we're screwed.

Very well said! Did you also notice he didnt have a knee brace on?

It is not Cael's MO to put in backups for "the experience." It is concerning that three starters could not go after a month off. Berge's situation is especially worrisome.

Don't disagree (especially your point about the long layoff); however, it is what it is and injuries/health have nothing to do with Cael's coaching imho. Hope for the best - that the starters make it back. The OP's bullshit about lack of focus has squat to do with the real issue which you hit on -- injuries/health of key starters.

I wanted to make sure I hit upon that point. I find it very telling about the stage of his recovery.

Didnt mean to be disrespectful if you felt that way, I knew the point you wanted to make and I totally agree that's more important for Shak than anything else.

Nope, didn't take it as a slight at all -- without having inserted a winky after the 2nd mention, I did wonder if some might perceive an unintended redundancy (as opposed to me just having some fun with it) . . . and so I wasn't sure which way you may have read it. All good.

I'm not concerned
Because kids are hurt? Damn leaders.

I was reading into Cael's statement - (paraphrasing) - 'we have to get there (NCAAs) in the right state of mind'.

Agree, if this is all about injuries, then not much you can do. If this is about not making weight or not wrestling with a 'score points and have fun' PSU attitude, then yeah, we need to get there in the right state of mind.

I got it right away do I get a prize lol

Key takeaways:

Meredith - disappointing, no need to say more. I think we were all hoping he can take out a #45 kid. Getting points at Nationals is looking like a long shot

Lee - awesome, looking hungry if he wrestles well he could/should be in the finals in March

Verk - yawn. The kind of kid he should major, yet....

Pipher - good effort considering I heard he is already down and certified @ 149. Can he give Verk a run for his money? I doubt it, but am open to watching it play out.

Berge - I am starting to get concerned there isn't more to the story. Maybe a Mario Lemeux type post concussion syndrome. Not good, I hope he gets a chance to shake off the rust before Bigs.

Markie - spectacular. A man on a mission. I have a feeling he is back next year as a volunteer assistant, and longer term would make an awesome addition to the staff.

Brooks - very solid. Would like to see more points differential but we are blessed to have him. Still hard to guage where he will fall this year, he can really manage a match a bit like Mark. Even when it is close he is in control and you can be confident he will win it.

Shak - he looked leaner with less upper body bulk than I was expecting. No brace which was a surprise. He needs a half dozen matches to get his mind back in it. Overall a solid match albeit tedious for the first 2 periods. I am not willing to say he is better than a low AA just yet

Seth - good showing. Great skills from neutral and on top. Can he be hang with Cassioppi which will prove the real test? Time will tell, but Cassi has jumped levels and is very aggressive.

It seems to be an issue when the opponent keeps their distance, but once Spencer gets his hands on them...then it really doesn't factor in much.

Yep, he is an absolute freak. I can't imagine how much it must suck to be underneath him.

I think we have seen Shak with gas tank problems when not in mid season shape in the past. I think/hope he was pacing him self today knowing that he needed to win and didn’t want to come out hot and heavy and run out of gas. His opponent allowed it to become a low effort snoozer where he could get thru the match. I think he would have had his hands full with a high quality or energy 197 today. Probably in shape in time for the post season.

Just a thought. It is January. Many looked a step slow and possibly tired.
Next January the biggest complaint on this board will be guys look tired, slow and a little gassed. Just like last January when the biggest complaint was looking tired and slow.
A reminder. Last year's Wisconsin match was January 13, which also was the biggest collective whine all year about looking tired, slow and gassed.

Anybody want to place any bets that next year around January 8 to January 17 we will have our biggest of the year collective whine fest about how tired, slow and gassed some of the guys look?

Wash, rinse and repeat come to mind.

I realized the other day how spoiled we are as fans. If we arent destroying people there's something wrong or something my expectations are way to high. Time to relax and enjoy the climb

Boy, are you going to be humiliated and embarrassed when every Lion looks like a world beater next January! :)

Now you know as well as I do that even if PSU pitches all shutouts next January with the majority scoring bonus point victories there will still be perceived underperformance issues and whining.:)
