In Iowa desperation news…

So 2 months ago: Iowa was getting 3 Ferraris (including a reformed AJ), Truax, Nagao. They flex "Empire Strikes Back" and IRONBIRD in all caps talk about the fear in the kitties

Today: Penn State added Truax and Nagao. Mitch Mesenbrink commits and says he's here to just compete but the culture is what he wanted. We also added Luke Lilledahl. Iowa's offseason essentially consisted of a Voinovich for Chittum swap and David Taylor is their new savior? (not even Spencer anymore)
Add slow-playing Rocco Welsh and Young Guns to Iowa’s list of off-season of follies proving once again how little things have changed. 😀

Hey, from a Hawk fan. David fing Taylor is the man. My favorite wrestler now that he's Team USA.
Love to watch him wrestle!

I genuinely thought it would take about a year and a half for this to all go sideways. That it only took a month and a half is just hilarious. And for Iowa State to be the beneficiary, that’s a cherry on top.

Brands really deserves all of this crap. I know you can’t control if a kid tweets out a commitment, but with the legal trouble/ other drama of those two older brothers, there are ways to get the message out very quickly that you don’t want associated with this nonsense.

Maybe if they were cleared by the courts at some point, you take a chance with a zero tolerance policy. I wouldn’t do it, but I could understand a desperate coach doing that. But to pull this sort of crap while the guy has a rape trial coming up in a few months. That’s insane from a management standpoint.

When you make deals with the devil, you are bound to get burned. It’s amazing how quickly Iowa has screwed away all of their momentum. Out-freaking-standing.

Possible looming gambling violations within the wrestling team. That’s as bad as you can possibly get for a 6 month stretch. If I was Iowa’s AD, I’d be on the phone with Cary Kolat, Brent Metcalf and Thomas Gilman. And I’d beg two of the 3 to come get this program headed in the right direction. And before anyone claims they wouldn’t take Gilman back, this isn’t true. There is a very large contingent of Gilman fans within the Iowa inner circle.

“There is no better person to lead the Iowa Wrestling program than Tom Brands." Can I get an amen.

You forgot Kueter injury at US Open, so maybe Ference never let's him wrestle.

Also, rumored Ayala injury that is keeping him off the freestyle scene.

EDIT: And reported Bouzakis unsuccessful recruitment from tOSU (outside of the Portal).

Does PDIII have any eligibility left? Maybe Iowa will accept him this time. I don't think he has ever been accused of gambling on his own competitions, nor been accused of sexual assault. PDIII and his circus would be a huge upgrade over the current shyt show.

How about this whopper "His sustained success at the University of Iowa is unmatched".

WTF? I hope Gable wasn't within earshot.

Not exactly breaking news. The older 2 can’t get themselves out of the headlines and everyone is aware of them by now.
Of course it’s not breaking news. The news is proceed with heavy caution, and finally most are figuring that out now.

(1 + 2+ 4 + 4)/4 = 2.75 rounded into the nearest integer is 3rd place. Thanks for verifying. Thinking the average will drop after the next 4 year cycle?
Technically “3rd or 4th” averages 3.5. Rounded to the nearest integer is 4. So not quite as bad as you wish.

HR/GIA posters for extremely indignant when I posted over there a month or two ago that I sincerely hoped all the Ferraris headed to Iowa City and that anyone who cheered for a team other than Iowa should hope for the same. Many of them went with “hurrr durr you’re just jealous they want to come here🤓”

To any of those guys who browse our board, hopefully you’re starting to see why I was right.
Wow, you're amazing! Tremendous insight.

Yeah, my bad. They haven't been good enough to get that 3rd place trophy. However, they have finished 4th twice as often as first or second in your 4 year window.

Never occurred to me. I think Kolat would be a good choice. Thought Navy was an odd choice. It's a step up from Campbell but it's not exactly the destination of aspiring world champions. Seems more like wrestling is a means to an end there. I wonder why his name is never brought up when ISU was looking...OU, etc.

Could be worse -- the Ferraris might stick around.

Have you ever been to Annapolis? It's pretty nice.

I have actually. A girlfriend in high school was contemplating going to the Naval Academy. Did the whole tour with her. Don't remember too much but it was pretty cool. I do recall the tour guide pointing out the unusual number of high end car dealerships just off campus. Evidently students are earning money the whole time but don't get it until graduation in the form of a lump sum and a lot of new grads end up in a candy apple red sports car. Also there was this mini looking Washington Monument type of thing about 20 feet tall and at some point each year it is greased up and a class has to get to the top using only teamwork. It's been a long time since I've thought about that. Wish I could remember more.

When my sister was going to school up in Boston, she met a naval officer who went back to school for his PhD. He was a top gun pilot, but left to go back to school. I'm sure the navy was also paying for this.

They fell in rough and got married, and that's when I started to go visit down Annapolis. I love the town, and my wife and I love to go down and visit. We stayed at the waterfront in a balcony room probably 45 times for various birthdays.

I mean her birthday is on July 5 so we would often get a room for the fourth and fifth so we could watch fireworks from the balcony. They only have about 25 rooms if you want to have a Water view so it's best to book early or maybe check into a late cancellation.

As of now that Marriott has really up their prices so we've been staying up the street a little bit it was called the graduate hotel. It used to be a Loews Hotel. We usually pay anywhere from a little over 100 to 200 some dollars for a room and it's still close to everything downtown.

We've seen shows twice at the Rams head brewery just a little bit down the street so it's a very convenient venue if you wanna see a knock at that place.

As for food it's pretty fantastic and we don't think it's really out of line economically for the prices for dinner and drinks. Not much more than small town Pennsylvania actually, if you're talking about again, you're a Miller and as for craft beer, will he know that's always a little pricey.

I check out the deli/restaurant chicken Ruth's on main street. Very cramped inside but that's the only place I've ever had a crab and cheese omelette with a side of crabcake.

A good time to visit Annapolis is during the annual Croquet Tournament held between the Naval Academy and St John's University, which is located right next to Academy. The tournament is scheduled in mid-April each year. It's goofy, but a lot of fun. The bars and restaurants are packed that weekend, assuming the weather is cooperating. Read about it:

The way Anthony dropped on their lap leads me to believe that a few overzealous boosters are out in front of some of the recruiting decisions. I felt the same way when Larry was making phone calls to parents last year.

Tom Brands is not stupid; he knows what bringing the older Ferrari brothers could do to the room. Maybe he's that desperate, though it seems the desperation is coming more from landlord Bob, 3-inch binder Larry and a few other boosters working behind the scenes.

We'll see ... maybe.

I'd expect a harsh crackdown given the Alabama Baseball case.

Alabama's head coach allegedly tipped off a buddy that he was swapping starting pitchers. That guy then bet those games before the lineup changes became public. (All bets against the Tide.)

That kind of thing gets the FBI involved, and if anyone thinks the NCAA casts too wide a net ...
I haven't read about the Bama case. That could have been a very innocent conversation between the coach and a friend that went horribly bad when the friend acted on it by betting.

But I guess as a coach, you should be aware and watch what you say.

Of course, if the coach told his friend knowing he would place bets accordingly, throw the book at him.

No. Tom IS that stupid. He's been told by boosters, fans and his own athletes not to recruit the Ferrari's. He's an idiot.

Your 3rd paragraph seems most likely. Otherwise, heckuva coincidence that the friend happened to be in a casino each time the coach called.

Alabama fired the coach.

He’s really ****ed because seemingly his most influential, involved booster has the ethics of a mafia underboss.

As for the team, I’m sure Nicolls feels as follows:
The athletes want control. I wouldn't put up with it and neither should Tom.

It's too bad and I feel sorry for the team, the above is no way to become an adult.
