Match Thread Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

I will bet any amount against all of these happening.
That's a pretty safe bet since each individual result has a chance of less than 100%, and put together to calculate the chance all 10 happen as a singular group, we are talking probably less than 5% the singular grouping of 10 happens.
Come back with a reasonable wager, like you will wager Iowa wins at least 4 individual matches or Iowa will score more than 5 takedowns.

However, my board, my shyt talking so deal with it. I was already nice to you once. What more do you want. Geez. Best part, if Ayala doesn't get healed up you guys are getting shut out.

Speaking of "bold statements"...

I can't wait for Carter's post-match interview.

Buchanan has to be cutting hard with his frame. If Barr is 0-0 going into 3rd , Im betting the Ranch on Barr.
Great observation! I noticed that today too. He's still muscular, but I think he looked a bit lean, and not as big and bulky as I remember. Even though today he totally dominated his opponent late in the match......he looked tired early. And as I mentioned previously he looked totally beat up. The Brands working their Iowa magic on him :p the meat grinder effect.

I also thought he probably reasonably knew that he wasn't going. Who knows, maybe he's just that dumb.
Before I saw that I really thought Ferrari would go next week (I think he has a date left). Brands knows that none of his guys ever gained ground on PSU after facing them, so I figured he’d roll the dice in the postseason. Gabe HAS to go now or he’s going to take serious shit from everybody.

Is it too much to ask to have a Ref who calls stalling by the books on Friday?

We know the Iowa style to tie up, grab fingers, retreat to the edge and try to slow every match to a crawl, hoping to hit a Hail Mary shot late in the 3rd will be on full display.

Need a competent Ref to make them wrestle.

Does anybody know how many riding time minutes we had in total last night. It had to be a team record
Looked like Rutgers plan is a foreshadowing of the coming Iowa plan. Keep it within one take down and try and get lucky at the end. It's good we can ride maybe get some turns. I'm hoping kasak rides teener harder than Levi did last year

As far as grabbing fingers, I like how freestyle rules handle it. One formal warning is given then the next violation is a penalty point. Far too many wrestlers are consistently grabbing their opponents' fingers as a stall tactic. This was evident with some of the Rutgers wrestlers, especially at 125. I just re-watched the 125 match. Luke's freestyle background might have been a hindrance to him there. His controlling the center and continually pushing Peterson toward the edge would have been a successful freestyle strategy, but in folk style, especially with an official who was hesitant to call stalling in neutral, it wasn't beneficial to him.

One pet peeve I have with some officials, and this official in particular, is they seem to overly focus on calling stalling for a wrestler leaving the wrestling area, and forget that continually backing up to the edge and then suddenly circling back in at the last second is stalling also. In the third period Peterson dropped to a knee and backed up for about 15 feet while Luke was attacking. Peterson was about 90% outside the line when he circled back in at the last second. That should be a stalling call, especially after six minutes of grabbing fingers, continually keeping your distance by planting you palm on your opponent's forehead, not shooting, etc.

Peterson wrestled smartly in that he wrestled defensively in such a way the official allowed it, and when he finally did take a committed shot, he executed it very well. He earned that win, whether I liked his tactics or not. This match should be a great learning example for Luke.

That is always the Iowa plan. Our guys have to avoid it. If you are Buchanan, what choice do you have with Barr, you know his pace is going to eventually empty your gas tank. Carter just has to go take it to Arnold, not being content to play it safe and win the one takedown match, go dominate. Same for Kasak, don't let Teemer hang around.

I'm not sure where these comments about Buchanan's gas tank are coming from. I've been watching him all year and, if anything, he's usually the more conditioned guy in the 3rd.

He's a real big guy as well, as was Little. He's not going to be easy to move around which is going to make it hard for Barr to set up that double. And if Barr does fire off a bad shot, he's deadly on the re-attack. And he comes up with the cross wrist and awful lot off of a TD which surprises a lot of guys.

I think he's looked better than Little this year so far and Barr had some trouble with Little before the gas tank came into play at the end.

It took Sinclair a couple of periods to figure him out on his feet and it might be the same for Josh. I just hope he's still in striking distance when that happens.

Teener and Kasak will be fun to watch. Both wrestlers look for feet to back moves. Teener is strong and loves to throw, Kasak loves to tie and trip. This one might end with the mat being slapped.

Not sure who else watched it, but Teemer had some highlight reel takedowns against Sasso yesterday. Cat-like quick, clean and smooth as silk. Was astonished how deep he got before Sasso even reacted.

My guess is some posters have complete disdain for anything Iowa related which leads them to make up issues in their minds to downplay any ounce of success by an Iowa wrestler or they are genuinely worried about the match up, so they are trying to convince themselves Buchanan has an issue to make themselves more confident in the match up. Bottom line, Barr is outstanding, especially for a freshman. Buchanan is the best at 197 right now. Both will bring it, and I'm excited to watch the match up.

For all of the folks thinking any of the top 3 197s are just going to wilt to Josh's onslaught, I think your blue and white lenses are a bit too thick.

The Poz match was one for the ages, and I don't think we will see something like that ever again from any wrestler. 0-0 in the 3rd to TF, really? Truly amazing.

1). Poz is good but far from great, and. 0-0 match after two is honestly a bit discouraging.
2). Barr broke him mentally as much as drove him to the end of his gas tank - he gave up in somewhat embarrassing fashion
3). Buchanan is on a whole different level, athletically, physically, and wrestles as the aggressor.
4). Barr is also tired in the 3rd period. His gas tank is not unlimited, but tasting blood in the water fired him up mentally vs Poz.

Barr is exceeding all expectations so far, and is visibly getting better each match, but those that are calling for him to wilt Buchanan in the same way aren't being honest.

Barr's defense appears elite. We will get validation Friday vs Buch's strong offense. Our room knows Buch very very well and our preparation and game plan with be very focused and effective. I suspect the game plan will be for a 0-0 1st, then 1 escape for each leading to a mid-3rd period go for the winning TD. That is a best case scenario and Buch will be prepared for the same. It should be epic, but those expecting a 5+ point easy victory or a wilting Buchanan in the 3rd are asking for way too much IMO.

I think they also push to the edge with tie ups without ever shooting much (Brands and PK come to mind)
