Iowa vs Iowa State

Wasn't Iowa still within striking distance of Ohio State last year when Brands sent his backup heavyweight out to face Ohio State's good Snyder? I know in Iowaland Brands is "the genius", but I do prefer the Cael way.
It was 17-12 going into Heavyweight. I guess Brands didn’t think Stoll could tech or pin Snyder. If he did, he would have been in the 0.1% of the population and would have sent him out.

doesnt seem very Iowa like. I wonder if the binder of gold intel was consulted.
I remember several years ago when Iowa held out their heavyweight in a dual with Minnesota, when Konrad was MN's heavyweight.

If I recall, MN was handily beating them, so they opted to hold out the heavyweight, which was met with ENORMOUS disapproval from the MN coaches. Even some words exchanged at the end during the handshake.

I would argue the only way Sammy was beating Snyder was by pinning him, so Brands just threw in the towel.
Stoll had missed the last 2 years of nationals. We needed his points so you guys wouldn’t have 3 threads on us finishing outside of the top 3

OMG..You trying to rationalize this makes me throw up in my mouth.

If Cael ever sat a healthy wrestler in fear of losing that's the day I turn in my PSU hat and call it quits

You know that Stoll was healthy? Brands doesn’t disclose injuries. Last week he said Kemerer was day to day.

With a pinner's chance of winning and his best (maybe second best) pinner up he chose to sit his guy and lose without giving it his best shot.

Paraphrasing Tommy Ryan, just not how Cael would have handled it.

Quoting nitlion6, "Cael has taught Tommy to feel comfortable with finishing below first."

No dunk, I do not believe that lesson is in Larry's 3 inch binder

The original prediction at the top of this thread has Gomez beating Desanto who is top 10. If Gomez is that highly thought of then he should beat RBY. You could even flip those 2 matches and it would be 18-17 ISU

For the record, this was not a prediction as much as an interesting potential outcome. All those picks are certainly within the realm of possibilty but something tells me things won't all go as smoothly for ISU in Carver.

Didn’t you see my earlier post, I said Cael’s word is gospel.

Tom Brands quote after Purdue "It's the lineup you're going to see."

That being said:

125 - Mackall dec Perez (ISU 3 Iowa 0)

133 - Gomez dec Desanto (ISU 6 Iowa 0)

141 - Murin dec Parker (ISU 6 Iowa 3)

149 - Degen dec Happell (ISU 9 Iowa 3)

157 - Carr dec Young (ISU 12 Iowa 3)

165 - Marinelli maj Jennings (ISU 12 Iowa 7)

174 - Coleman dec Wilson (ISU 15 Iowa 7)

184 - Wilke dec Colbray (ISU 15 Iowa 10)

197 - Miklus dec Bowman (ISU 18 Iowa 10)

Hvy - Gremmel dec Costello (ISU 21 Iowa 10)

There is no way in H@LL that Brands will not send out the best lineup they possibly can. Spencer and Warner will both be out there....probably Lugo too if they need him. I would think by 149......both will know if they need to send their best....ie Lugo and Carr. They both want to win.....really bad. Even more importantly…...Neither wants to LOSE this match......and Iowa will not...…..or I will be buying beers for the many :)

Seems to me Brands has been a lot of talk the last several years, Keeps Stoll on the bench with a win possible, ducks VT in National duals, and now may not wrestle his best line up against in state rival ISU. He then gets on his soap box about having to beat the best to be the best and WON'T get the match done with PSU. Way to grow the sport BUG! I will give him pass on Kemdog hope he heals fast, seems like a super nice kid and a hell of a wrestler.

Terry was probably out of the building already, thereby avoiding the handshake controversy.

Kinda reminds me of the time a certain Kerry McCoy was going to compete in front of the largest-ever home crowd at PSU (1st BJC dual) against Iowa for his 100th win. Until a certain embronzed (See, Tato has Iowa roots) Iowa icon thought better of it, and kept his Heavy on the bench for a FF.

You're giving Brands a pass on a kid who's undergoing surgery?

How charitable.

Now this is a fun thread. I do know that if ISU beats Iowa there will be a clothes optional hot tub party on BWI
If Iowa State beats Iowa on Saturday, I could imagine the Iowa Hot Tub party looking like this...

while over at the BWI hot tub party... I'm bringing my girlfriend and it would look like this.

and I'd bring my other girlfriend also.

Personally, I have a hard time believing Brands would risk this result and think he will have one of more starters back for this dual.

I had this same thought. Sincere question -- how big of an impact (if any at all) would a loss to ISU this weekend have on Brands' job security? Like others, I've heard rumblings of big donors growing impatient, blah, blah, blah. I suspect there would be a tremor in the force but that TnT wouldn't be in any real danger. But I live a long way from Iowa City and rely on the insight (and rank speculation) of others to know what's really going on. Turk & JMadden, what's your take on how big of a deal an ISU win would be?

If you mean Gable, that is absolutely NOT true, since Gable wasn't even there. He was recovering from hip surgery. Zalesky made the decision to have freshman Wes Hand forfeit to Kerry.

In Gable’s book, he says he told Zalesky that Hand hadn’t earned the right to wrestle someone that good yet, and to keep him out.

Read it for yourself.

Who cares they will still be fighting for 3rd or 4th place....No biggie....Iowa State is going to be the best team in that state in a couple years....Bet on it....Many want Brands out and i have heard that at the last 3 National Tournaments from Iowa fans standing in line....

A couple years is 2020. You are saying Iowa St will be better than Iowa that year? Are you talking dual or higher finish at nationals? Either way, that would be a bad bet IMO.

I agree. It'll certainly be more than a couple of years before that happens. UNI should be better than ISU for the next couple of years, and I'm pretty certain that we wouldn't handle the Sqwawkers over the next two years.
