Iowa's back

Something is seriously wrong with a scoring system that identified Iowa as National Champs. Anyone with a brain and a pair of eyes could see who the better team was. I know it's a team effort, but our other 5 guys didn't do all that bad either. If I were the ncaa I would want Saturday night to mean a bit more than it currently does.

Meh....I think the scoring system works well enough. Yeah, Iowa was rewarded for having 10 participants and scoring early, then mostly tripping over the own feet (even while the refs inexplicably tried to keep them up), but it does reward finalists and champions already. PSU just didn't have enough horses this year. Next year will mostly likely be different and we'll be fine with the scoring system, whether PSU gets 3 champs or 6. ;)

It’s a team championship and Iowa had the better team although a couple of observations from the championship round. PDU guys were just in better condition and knew how they had to wrestle their favored opponents. The Iowa guys seemed gassed at times especially last night. The other was that there didn’t seem to be many Iowa adjustments made since B1Gs. They just wrestled. Lee completely had Eierman measured and seemed to be stalking him all night with little to nothing from Eierman. I was shocked. Starocci just seemed more aware of how he needed to stay away from Kemerer’s strengths and then pounced at the end when Kem was gassed. Even SLee looked spent in his match and wrestling with no ACL’s? How does that happen and why? My god take a year off and get it fixed. I was stunned by that admission.

He got them an NC. That should be enough. That kid has had so much weight thrust onto his shoulders - oppressive pressure from selfish fans. Covid really jacked up his plans

Like somebody else said, he was just looking for butt rubs. But if it was really “8 days ago” figure he might as well win NCAAs cause OTT is prolly out of the question.

A little banter isn't bad, though I feel like it's time to offer Iowa congrats after a National Championship win. It was a terrific championship, and I'm excited for the future, but right now is Iowa's time -- at least for a little bit ;).

Yeah, their fans are absolutely brutal. The sh&t talking they're doing towards some of their wrestlers, is ridiculous. The sh&t talking towards others teams as well. Must be a miserable pedestal they're standing on. All I know is this. This here is one happy fanbase. Iowa doesn't even know if they're happy, and a vast number of their posts are about stalling, refs, roids, and Cael. Lol.

...you hafta wonder who’s decision it was for Lee to wrestle ... he looked almost disgusted after his final when Brands approached him... the Iowa kids have a completely different demeanor than the Penn State team... oh,well...
Make no mistake Spencer WANTED to wrestle. The team title was locked.

Berge’s injury put a dent in our ability to win. He scored 3 pts before injury. If he placed 7th for example, that would have likely added another 6.5 to 8 points. (Joe Lee’s troubles were unfortunate as well.) We lost by 15.5. Where do we find another 7.5 to 9 points? Sure our champs will likely increase their totals. Howard, Lee, and Bartlett is my guess.

K not being medically cleared to wrestle until Maryland, really hampered his ability to place higher, having Bartlett would have added some points also.

I may ask in another thread, but what was the last year Iowa won a NC at an upper-5 weight class? Borschel in 2010?
Yes, believe that is correct.

And in the ten championships competed since 2011, 4 individual champions for Iowa: Matt McD, Derek St John, Cory Clark and Spencer Lee

Since 2011 Penn State has had 16 individual champions: Frank Molinaro, Matt Brown, Quinten Wright, Ed Ruth, David Taylor, Nico Megalutis, Zain Rutherford, Jason Nolf, Bo Nickal, Mark Hall, Vincenzo Joseph, Anthony Cassar, Roman Bravo Young, Nick Lee, Carter Starocci, and Aaron Brooks.

All good wrestlers like Spencer want to wrestle. The question is whether they should be allowed to if there's a risk of further injury. Kerk got a late start to wrestling this year because he wasn't medically cleared. What kind of medical clearance is there for a torn ACL?

Obviously none, as I stated earlier,Kerk has been without an ACL for at least 2 years, and its not a secret.
The risk of further damage must be minimal.

And 27 titles among the PSU champs vs. 5 for the Iowa ones.

You mean like 2018?
There is nothing wrong with the scoring system.
Iowa outscored PSU at 6 weights.

Loved it when ESPN put up the photo of all 4 national Champs!!!!!

Did anyone it a photo of that????

2018? IIRC, we got 5 into the finals, 4 champs and still only won by 6 or so over osu. No way the team title should have been that close. Saturday night needs to be weighted heavier wrt team scoring. Not a good look for any sport when the champs soil the mattress all night during finals.

I kind of like the fact kids who can't make the finals can make it up on the backside it puts an emphasis on the team and keeps kids fighting harder on the backside. If the points were weighted differently I think that would change

Agreed, but they had best be out there chopping wood and carrying water or they're on short time!!

So you're saying Penn State had as many individuals become champions last night as Iowa has had in the last decade? Nice.

Well then, I guess we could score it 10 points for a first and that's it. We won 40 to 10. It doesn't feel like it is a very accurate scoring system though.

2018
OSU far out performed PSU in the first two rounds and while we had 5 in the finals to OSU's 2, going into the finals OSU had 2 3rds, 2 4ths, a 5th and a 6th while we had a 5th and 2 7ths.

As I suggested above, if the team championship is to be determined by the number of champions or even finalists then OK, you need to propose that. Your idea doesn't seem to be much of a team measurement and I don't like it, but that's OK it's your idea.

The original question was how many champs has Iowa had at the Upper 5 weights since 2011. It's zero. St. John at 157 is the highest weight they've won at. McDonough and Spencer were both at 125 and Clark at 133. Tony Ramos won at 133 in 2014 as well.

Prior to last night, Nico was the only champ PSU had at a weight below 149 in that time-frame, I think.

When I look at the list of champs PSU has had under Cael, I see some guys who probably would have peaked at being AA types or finalists (Molinaro, Brown, Quentin Wright, Cenzo, Cassar) under previous coaches. Some others might have won fewer under a different coaching staff. I can't think of too many who fell short of potential.

Iowa has had a number of favorites fall short (Gilman, McDonough as a senior, Marinelli Kemerer, Eierman, etc.),

Iowa's had a slight advantage at the lower weights, but with RBY and Nick Lee winning that's kind of going away.

For wrestlers looking to be their best, it should be clear that Penn State will develop you, or at least make sure you don't fall short of potential if you were already there. Iowa can't promise the same.
