Is Penn State Freshman Levi Haines a Title Contender at 157 Pounds?

I just re-watched the SVN/Gomez bout. I counted at least eight legitimate shots by SVN along with several other level changes/penetration attempts. I would consider that being fairly offensive, especially against a dangerous wrestler like Gomez. I see great things with SVN going forward. SVN already has great positioning and hand fighting, and as was mentioned by another poster, those are areas younger wrestlers tend to struggle with.

He gassed Gomez also...it wasn't a factor this time...but....

Levi wrestled well this past Friday. He majored a guy with a career losing record. And now we’re debating if can win nationals this year.

Next week's match will tell us alot about where Levi stands. If it goes down that is...
Assuming Levi beats Lewan, more on here will jump on the Levi bandwagon. There will still be those who think save the shirt and even a few who will say he still hasn't been tested. Possibly after the Big10s most will see him as tested.

Levi Haines is tested daily in Lorenzo (more than any weekly dual match), our coaches see it and know damn well where he stands. Trust em.

Nobody remembers this guy but in the mid 70s penn state had a 190 pounder named Bill Bertrand. Bertrand was busted for streaking twice, and it wasn't unusual for him to take the mat after a long night drinking the night before...he was a total madman...
All talent, no discipline.
Pissed Koll off on an almost daily basis.

So he was Ferrari without the trunk full of guns?
If they had social media back in the 70s he would have been an early version of quick twitch. From Burgettstown pa so he probably was familiar with guns.

Unlike quick twitch (who may eventually), he graduated. Unknown about quick twitch, had an apparent productive adult life.

1)It’s FAST Twitch
2) I like Quick Twitch better hahahaha

I don't know about you lot, but that was one of the closer 6-2 matches I have seen.

You had the wiley, powerful, skilled veteran vs the wide eyed and energetic apprentice. When you think about, it the outcome was not in doubt. That match was a lesson, one of several in the plan.

What was clear is the inexperienced student gained yet one more valuable live lesson. Something that you can't quite get in the room.

Had the circle been 3 feet wider, and had he practiced how to defend a great gut, the points could have been even.

SVN knows for certain he is 'that close' and he has 2 more months to get that much closer. RBY once held up two fingers signaling just how close he was, so too is SVN.

Maybe I am the only one who saw that 4 point differential as something much less. I came away from that match exceedingly encouraged.

I am not quite there yet with Alex, but both Levi and SVN are on plan. We have seen this trajectory before. Come March noone is going to be happy going to against these under-seeded kids. Fun is before us. Beware the ides of March.

Good take on the match, and outlook for the season as it progresses.

Intermat has PSU 31 points over second place Iowa in tournament standings so barring injuries Levi is really not needed this year. I think the main reason you would pull the redshirt is if it is true he can only hold 157 for this season in which case the redshirt may come in handy next year if the guys above him are not moving up.

I talked to a coach last year about redshirting as a freshman in a different sport. The coach said if the athlete can make the varsity team as a freshman, they won’t redshirt them. Never waste a season, the coach said, because you never know what will happen in the future.

I like seeing PSU wrestlers redshirt as freshman when they can, but that conversation has stuck with me.

Off topic. You spoke earlier about wanting to come to State College for a match. Are you coming up for the Iowa match?
It's funny you ask because I'm about to post a request for a good ticket to the dual. However, I still have to confirm one more cheer date. My goddaughter is doing competitive cheer and since her dad died a couple years back I ensure I make it to all of her cheer events, regardless of how much I loathe spending an entire weekend (time and money) to watch her and her team perform two 3-minute routines on the big stage. But she loves it so it is what it is. I should know for sure in the next couple days. That said, do you have access to a good ticket? I'd be willing to pay top dollar to a person or a charity for a great seat. :)

NH - kudos on being there for your goddaughter! Well done.

That's underselling Model a little bit. He's a top 20 6th year senior, so probably at least 5 years older than Levi, and is 11-4 and has only lost to guys in the InterMat top 20 this year (Artalona x2, Chumbley, and Levi). He was a qualifier last year (and lost to Franek and O'Connor, so elite competition...) and has some quality wins (Gilcher, Kraisser). That was a great win for Levi in dominating fashion. While Model isn't winning it, 157 is open for the taking this year. If 157 had someone nearly unbeatable like 149 (Yanni) or was stacked like 165, I wouldn't give him much of a chance to win it, but 157? Sure, there's a chance (although my money isn't on exactly it yet, though...).

If Levi goes the rest of the year and the opponents send their projected starter each match, this is who he will face. Besides Lewan, not the best competition. The rankings are wrestlestat so don’t read into that.

How many seats do you require? The more you need, the tougher the task!
