I actually heard something to the affect that the Paulsens are quite close to Storr and that they didn’t steal him.

Ohhhhh, so all of those phone calls were about rent being due. Makes so much sense now.well they are his landlord too........
I'm glad he didn't block it. It appears he did not want to be there from the start anyway. Let the kid wrestle, call out the tampering and let the NCAA (for what that's worth) handle the rest. Not a good look for UVA. I'm surprised Dresser didn't block them in the transfer request....

Wow pretty much covers it.
Three sides to every story. We’ve heard both. Truth somewhere in the middle
Storr response after the Metcalf shove tells me tampering was going on.Storr gets shoved and responds I'm out of here anyway to me that wouldn't be your normal responseUnforced PR error by Dresser. By now he should know that, if you go public in this day and age, the other side will come out, and it may not be flattering.
Especially if you go public with an attack and a blatant lie. The attack: accusing the Paulsons of tampering (whether or not it was true). The lie: claiming to not block Storr -- when in reality Dresser was transparently using the NCAA to do his dirty work for him, then publicly claiming the high road.
Dresser's initial actions also drew extra attention to the situation. Probably won't hurt him, still not smart.
Also get the feeling that Dresser dumped Storr to clear 141 for Ian Parker. Funny how Parker immediately moved up and took out Heil, and afterward came word that he was having trouble with the cut to 133.
The type of room that Storr trained in last year the pace was slower and the vibe was feel good. Now with the new staff it's a grind and the room is vocal. Not every kid can handle a room that intense hence why he was wanting to move on prior to the WVU dualMaybe it's just me, but Storr's choice of words like "toxic", "unsafe" (environment) and "put stress on me" makes me a bit skeptical about his claims. I don't doubt that Dresser and his staff are demanding and tough, but this retort sounds whiny as hell, especially since Storr is the only ISU or VT wrestler I am aware of to make such claims.
Like you say, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
Maybe ... or maybe he was already on his way back to the locker room or the stationary bike anyway. Who knows. "Out of here" was Storr repeating Metcalf's phrase for leaving the mat area.Storr response after the Metcalf shove tells me tampering was going on.Storr gets shoved and responds I'm out of here anyway to me that wouldn't be your normal response
That's the thing, to me anyway. Too quick to judge isn't fair to any of the parties. Sad, all the way around.Maybe ... or maybe he was already on his way back to the locker room or the stationary bike anyway. Who knows. "Out of here" was Storr repeating Metcalf's phrase for leaving the mat area.
Storr said in frustration I replied "I'm already out of here" doesn't sound like he was repeating Metcalf. He's not saying every text or call was about rent he says they mentor me.Every D1 coach knows the rules once the Paulsons were hired by VA it's a clear violation.Maybe ... or maybe he was already on his way back to the locker room or the stationary bike anyway. Sure doesn't sound like Storr repeated Metcalf, other than using Metcalf's exact phrase plus one more word.Storr said in frustration I replied "I'm already out of here" doesn't sound like he was repeating Metcalf. He's not saying every text or call was about rent he says they mentor me.Every D1 coach knows the rules once the Paulsons were hired by VA it's a clear violation.
I think he never bought into the new staff.Old staff slower paced room more about feeling good and the new staff fast paced tougher room that focused on making you uncomfortable.I think Storr wanted out and I think they realized he wasnt gonna make it in the system.Instead of being men about it they took it to the media and now it makes Iowa State,Storr and wrestling all look bad. This stuff happens weekly in many college sports but are usually just rumors.Sure doesn't sound like Storr repeated Metcalf, other than using Metcalf's exact phrase plus one more word.
Paulsons may have tampered and Storr maybe previously decided, but this is weak proof. It was an emotional response with Metcalf injecting intensity. Emotions sometimes reveal truth, more often not. Emotions go up, IQ goes down.
In any case it's clear that ISU wanted rid of Storr for whatever reason -- and that "tampering," whether true or not, is the excuse, not the reason. And they used old school, hard nosed leverage to ditch him under their terms.
Mission accomplished.
I'd still like to know how a coach becomes an athlete's landlord.

Not to worry, Vodka will be making calls as soon as he recovers. I heard he was seen on a pay phone here in Cedar Rapids last night. Since pay phones are extinct here, and it was -20 wind chill last night, I can only assume a long frost bite recovery time.
On topic though, as others have said already, truth is in the middle. Storr could have perceived the situation as he stated, and ISU staff could have felt he was not all in. He obviously didn't belong there.
Much of this makes sense. If he undercut the coaches, then he needed to go.Bad deal all the way around. Heard this morning it has been more ongoing than I originally thought. Storr was pretty vocal to teamates with phrases like "we shouldn't even be doing this" "we are training wrong" often quoted certain former assistant coach when judging the direction of the current staff. Was convinced he needed to sit and study film to correct his gas tank issues and lack of fight. Probably all and all a poor fit for the current staff. It happens.
I was also told ultimatum was more along the lines of "Let us coach you or get out of here now" meaning you can't wrestle here one more day while taking your wrestling direction from a coach on another staff.
Seriously.A coach being a landlord to a current athlete that they coach would/should be a major red flag to anyone with a clue about the concept of conflict of interest.
A coach being a landlord to a current athlete at another school goes many steps beyond being a conflict of interest.
Yes im serious. Not sure how many coaches you know or get a chance to talk to but most talk about getting a kid thats the right fit which means can he train the way we train physically and mentally.I wanna punt this shoddy take to the moon.

What a dang schitt show. During the Oranges Saga, I found Dresser's candor refreshing & interesting.
Here? Puke.
You know another, better way to view someone who self-describes as "I just tell it like it is" is? As someone who's unable to grow the phuque up. They may as well be shouting to the world "Well, you know me, I always refuse to learn how to improve my communication skills"
I'm so over these meat-headed "the kid can't handle this room" takes. Dresser wants to come in, set up shop with his loyal staff and some 'old-school' guys who fit his 'culture' of 1980s toughness, fine. But make em take a dang communications or a PR class!
And he should too.
Much of this makes sense. If he undercut the coaches, then he needed to go.
OTOH, "study film to fix gas tank issues and lack of fight" hilariously flunks the sniff test. That's Meathead 101 for "we don't want to waste our time with him." If a kid shows an interest in improving himself, that should be encouraged. What's the word for that? Coaching.
So if he didn't accept their coaching and they didn't want to coach him, then they're at the right destination. Too bad they took a messy path to get there.
All us PSUers were not happy when Larry Johnson moved on to Ohio State to coach and was still communicating with his former defensive lineman. That was not kosher.A coach being a landlord to a current athlete that they coach would/should be a major red flag to anyone with a clue about the concept of conflict of interest.

Agreed...but since wrestling isn't a money making engine for them, do they even pay much attention? All us PSUers were not happy when Larry Johnson moved on to Ohio State to coach and was still communicating with his former defensive lineman. That was not kosher.
The Paulson's having a business relationship with Storr and the resulting ongoing communication is beyond stupid for both parties. I bet Storr will not be going to UVA. UVA would be dumb to allow him to go there, just asking for trouble from the NCAA.
I wanna punt this shoddy take to the moon.

I love Mercalf. If he indeed shove Storr after the match. Dressler ready, fire, aim approach may prove to be premature. These accusations are irrelevant if Storr goes anywhere but VA.Come now- you set up a straw man based on something Dresser never said and complain about being tired of it? When did he say "this kid can't handle the room"? He didn't. It would seem you are tired of something that never even happened which might in itself be tiring. I can't imagine any coach would be too happy with a coach from a different team having daily communication with his student athlete. The cruiseliner U guys may find this within reason, but most people don't. I don't post this to start a pissing match and generally really enjoy your takes, but I can't agree with this one. The argument about the old school coaching style of beating them up is a topic for a different day, and I don't at all disagree. It may take awhile to rub all of the Iowa off Metcalf, but he is one heck of a good guy.

To he honest, the Iowa State staff really cannot say anything about Storr publically, that would be in rather bad taste. In these situations, the coaching staff has to literally sit back and take it. ISU has given Storr his release, about all they can really say or should say.I jacked all of this up. Apologies to both you & west2east. Biggest of my many problems with my takes were actually user error with the website. I've never learned multi-quote response right, still. I didn't mean to conflate my reaction to west2east's takes (which I'd typed, but then thought better of posting & moved on--only to find that the site still had them recorded when I came back) with what I had asked you. I appreciate you answering my question, and I didn't mean to use it as a set up to a rant.
w2e, I do totally get the importance of recruiting fit. And training culture. Sorry to lash at you.
I'm just really disappointed with how Kevin Dresser, Zadick & Metcalf have all:
a. handled/coached the alleged lack of fit and;
b. communicated to the kid & to the public about it all
No, it’s not a good look. Storr should also have clammed up to the public and shared his story with the NCAA and move on. We all are stuck with he said he said and our interpretation of events is impossible. The truth is likely not all his, and not all of Dresser’s staff side either. It becomes believable because it’s outrageous, or we are willing to believe perhaps. In a way, I kind of appreciate the radio silence we got from Cael and Nick. This airing of private laundry not a good look for Dresser or Storr.
Creates a lot of drama which really helps neither party going forward.
