I didn't want to see Beard leave, but I'm happy with his school choice as well. Beard is too good to sit on a bench. I'm glad he stuck around last year. He easily could have left when Max came aboard.
Well this makes the grad transfer back in 23-24 easy enough
That scenario playing out would be hilarious - it would truly cause spontaneous combustion amongst some fanbases

This will certainly make the early season dual with Lehigh a little more interesting.
Beard immediately becomes Lehigh's top wrestler -- he's the only returning AA on their roster.
Michael wasn't going anywhere last year. From what i was told Michael responded beautifully to the Max challenge. He bulked up his gas tank, he cleaned up some technique flaws and he got much better. During the summer and early season Michael was winning more of the live goes.
Michael was less than 15 seconds from winning the initial wrestle off, but as everybody witnessed this season Max has a gas tank second to none and is like a dog after a bone. He (Max) is after it until it's his.
Michael will be a solid AA for the Hawkengineers and I hope the best for him.
I am sure the Lehigh fans will love him, but by golly by moving forward and initiating offense he is going to confuse the hell out of that fanbase.
Great decision. I’m just happy he didn’t end up at Michigan. As long as PSU has the team title wrapped up I hope Beard wins a national title next year. I think he matches up with Ferrari better than Max does. Beard is a better athlete than Max and is one of the only guys who can match Ferrari in that department. Can’t go wrong with Beard or Max winning though especially if they knock off Ford Focus in the process
If he weighs 200 walking around I am a monkey's uncle. He is a big kid.
Put me in the "I'm just glad it's not Michigan camp". I wish him all the success in the world and I'm very curious to see him vs Max in the Lehigh Dual. There is a not insignificant part of me that will be pulling for Beard in that match. NOT in the tournament or anything, but in the dual, I might be secretly pulling for Michael. I will go ahead and duck and cover now. Fire away!
Not shocking but a lot of PSU wrestlers supporting Michael's Instagram post including Brooks, Star, RBY, Lee. Nick Lee with a joke that his edit gave him abs he doesn't have then added a "love you" ... like it's been said, wasn't an easy decision for Michael nor are there remotely hard feelings, just something he needed to do for himself.
I know this is Michael’s thread, but it’s worth saying I don’t think there’s anybody here not happy Max is onboard when we say we’re hoping Michael does great.
This sucks after all this waiting I wanted this kid to experience his dreams with PSU. I understand him leaving but it just sucks in my opinion.
Seems like a win-win for him. He gets to wrestle very close to home and gets to compete for another respected program/coach while getting his degree

I think he’s one of the very few guys at 197 who can compete with Ferrari on their feet. If his gas tank is good to go and he can get out from bottom then it could be interesting. imo

It wasnt just about Dean though, rumor seems to be getting more believable of a major weight shift after next year. Who knows, maybe Beard cant beat Brooks NOW, let alone when AB is a full 97.
It boils down to Haines+Barr > somehow keeping Beard.

Odds are we didn't lose the better wrestler long-term. Not a knock on Beard -- but he'd have to be a 2x champ for that to be true, with 2 returning champs this year and Ferrari having the same eligibility as Beard (or until he finally goes WWE).
It's probably true that in 2024 and 2025 he'll be better than whoever we start at 197 -- unless that turns out to be Brooks. But we'll be OK.
I feel like people have the back-up QB syndrome with Beard. Dean will most likely be a three time finalist and two time national champ. Beard has won nothing at the collegiate level. Everything is based on projections. Also, the fact he has gone to Lehigh strongly suggests he will never win a national championship because he is going to a far inferior room.
7th place as a frosh is winning nothing at the collegiate level? Ridiculous statement. If Dean hadn't come IMHO Beard would have finished top 4 at NCAAs this year.
And according to reputable sources was neck-and-neck with Dean in Lorenzo.
Maybe some truth to the “room” comment but I still see Beard high on podium.
Well, good chance we will get to see Max and Beard live next season. Maybe twice.
Beard had a pretty favorable draw to finish 7th that year and with the draw he had he probably should have finished higher. Not trying to take away from his accomplishment. 7th and being an AA as a freshman is great, no matter the path that took you there.
For me, I have no doubts about Beard's wrestling ability. I am most curious to see if his gas tank issues are resolved when he goes deep into a match against the top level guys.
If he didn't trip over his feet against Amine, he probably would have finished higher!
