minn thread...

hooo boy .. too close for that pin ! Ref in the right place could've called it .. In away building.

whoa, Rasheed was in trouble for a moment there - his back was on the mat (or close to it).

Got caught a couple of times, but Rasheed looks pretty good after the 1st. Keep it up.

Shades of the old Shak on top here but I'd like to see him take a shot and finish a mat h w/ some aggression

It all depends on the ref. If you have watched matches Angel Rivera officiated you will notice he is quick to call stalls and will keep calling them. People say don’t leave it up to the official but in wresting I feel like the ref has more say in the outcome than other sports

Had no problem with the way he called it, the Minny wrestler posted 2 TDs to Verk's 1 and really pretty much dominated the action in the 2nd and 3rd periods... The Ref was clearly not going to let Verk back into a 1-point win via stalling (the diametric opposite of what the Ref rewarded Gross for doing). Complete bullshit what the Ref allowed Gross to do - rulebook clearly states it is an illegal strategy - and you would not see that rewarded in March at Nationals imho.

Rasheed hangs on for a 2 point win, due to the huge RT advantage. I'll take the win and he had a couple TDs, but still seemed a lot closer than it should have been.

Penn State wrestlers have shirts that say "No one fights alone" ? Anyone know what they're promoting ?

Has a ‘fleeing the mat’ stall call EVER been awarded to the benefit of Penn State, you know the team with the actual best wrestlers for the past 10 years? One would think with the caliber of wrestlers Penn State has had, you would have seen at least one in their favor.

Verk deserved his stall calls, he was clearly just holding on. Gross was far more active throughout the match against RBY. There's a fine line between "wrestling defensively" and "barely wrestling." If you hold the center and don't back up refs aren't going to ding you. In Gross's case, RBY generally makes it easier on the refs to ignore what might be considered stalling because he sets up his offense from space, making holding the center easier.

I have no problem with how either match was called. Right or wrong, the best you can hope from officials is consistency and predictability. That's all I saw in both matches.

Not sure what you were watching but Gross absolutely was going backwards repeatedly as he attempted to fend off multiple deep shots by RBY. He was running backwards for the entire last 20 seconds as he was attempting to get out of bounds to avoid the body throw by RBY (RBY had the position on him and Gross was attempting to get to the edge so when he got thrown it would be OB which is precisely what eventually happened at the very end and is supposed to be called stalling when you use the edge in this manner.).

Not sure what you were watching, but you're completely full of it that Gross was not moving backwards for much of the period. Laughable claim actually.

Okay, let's compare how that Ref called Verk's match versus how the Ref called the RBY v Gross match. Verk escaped with only 1 minute left to take a 1 point lead, they then had a scramble that took them down to 25 seconds.... The Ref made it clear he was not going to let Verk stall his way to victory and called the stall with around 20 seconds left essentially giving them time in regulation for next TD wins knowing that if time expires the wrestlers would face the identical situation in TB overtime.

I was told by several posters on the board that Gross wrestling exclusively defensively was fine and that Refs "never call stalling" in that situation in the 3rd period...
Tough to compare how stalling is called from one dual to another. You can maybe argue that Gross should have been hit with stalling against RBY, but the calls against Verk in the Minny dual were justified IMO. From a general perspective, almost any stall call against Verk is understandable because his entire MO against any opponent with a pulse is to block/stall most of the match and try to win by one point.

Seth loses 5-13. PSU wins the dual 31-9? I say 31-10, unless Minn lost a team point somewhere.

JB agrees 31-10, BTN had 31-9 on their graphic

This is the Minnesota thread. Go complain about a match on Friday in the Wisconsin thread.

I don't understand why Gable doesn't just always run in that high gear he has. It's like he doesn't enjoy wrestling or something.

Congrats to Jammenz--Eggum finally scores double-digit points against the nits.
