NCAA Session 3 Thread

Well....actually BECAUSE all of the matches are discreet...the odds ARE multiplicative.

But don't let that stop ya'!!

Thanks; it's really not a difficult concept to grasp. Just like the NCAA hoops tourney -- even though the odds of any particular 1, 2, 3 or 4 seed winning is quite high, the odds of all 16 of them winning is quite low.

We did better at both weights than anyone could have imagined. We lost at 141 because he is wrestling up a weight, and we lost at 165 because we didn't quite wrestle our match, and the other kid is damn good too.

Geno is getting better and better - have you noticed how he is scoring the first TD more and more often as time progresses? He came to PSU with basically zero offense and a purely defensive style that only allowed him to win a 1-0 or 2-1 match against somebody he could dominate on the mat.....live by the sword, die by the sword. Geno said it himself, he has made tremendous progress since coming to PSU and has improved tremendously since being in "the room" at PSU - Geno said, and I quote, "I wish I would have come to PSU 2 years ago, I'd be a much better wrestler and so much further along....". Geno has made tremendous progress since the beginning of this year -- he is developing the confidence to get aggressive and not worry about falling behind with the fear that you've lost if you give up a TD early in the 1st period.... Geno will be even BETTER next year - overall I think he is a solid wrestler, he needs to better develop his offense though.

No, not really because the odds of Zane, J-No, Bo and Smack winning are very, very, very high - their opponents have almost no chance of winning outside of them getting injured which again is an extremely low probability event. Mega probably has the highest probability of losing and that "real" probability is single digit imho.

Damn right. Geno IS improving and we are going to be better at 165 next year, no matter who wins the spot in the room. He now has improved his scrambling, has improved his neutral game, claimed two go-to moves, and is getting better at getting out from bottom(the last match not withstanding as that kid is one of the best riders in the nation at the weight). In addition, Geno is going to be even stronger next year. Between him and Cenzo, we're going to be much better at 165 next season.

The appropriate comparison to the NCAA tournament would be, "what is the probability of all of the 1 seeds beating the 16 seeds and the 2 seeds beating the 15 seeds in their bracket in any given year...... And you are quite incorrect, the probability of all of those extremely high probability outcomes all happening is in fact very high, not low. (e.g., all 1 and 2 seeds in each bracket advancing past the first round).

I know ONE kid who is defying odds: Freaking Weatherspoon of Iowa State, lol. Some people are shocked at Weigel, but not me, I saw this coming.

And I wrestled in the PIAA championships at a higher weight. Anytime big boy!

Whatever bro - I grew 6 inches and put on 50 lbs between the time I entered my Sr. year of high school and came home for the summer from my freshman year at college such that I returned home the summer after my freshman year at PSU 6'2" (still my height), 205 lbs and a 30 inch waist. My high school Head Wrestling Coach (who also was an asst football coach - actually shared the Wrestling HC duties with his brother, he coached the lightweights and his brother coached the Upper Weights) looked at me and said, "Is that really you? Where in the hell were you two years ago?"

I share the excitement and the optimism, but I suspect the actual odds of winning all 5 are well under 50%.
I would be much more surprised if all 5 did not win their semi final matches that I would be by them all winning.

It isn't like a Cael coached Penn State team hasn't put 5 guys in the finals before.

I was at this afternoon's session, some observations from a wrestling fan in NJ :

Session opened with a loud playing of Ozzy Osbourne's classic "Crazy Train' which got all the Roided up Rasslin Fans in a lather ! lol

The Garden did a great job w huge video screens everywhere showing action on all 8 mats, plus the PA guys were obviously wrestling vets who kept the crowd informed on everything going on. The Huge 4 sided screen that hung from the ceiling was also very helpful keeping tabs on other bouts.

RU crowd did a great job of cheering on the Rider Wrestlers (NJ kids). The loudest crowds in order (IMO) were : Penn St, Rutgers, Cornell, Va Tech, Ohio St, Okla St. Surprisingly , Iowa didn't have as large a crowd as I thought, same with Mich, although both MIch and Iowa have BB games tonight in the NCAA at Barclays Brooklyn.

IMO- most impressive wrestlers are Nashon Garrett, Dierenger, Retherford and Snyder.

Best Gyro anywhere is on 7th Ave , 1 block N of MSG called Gyro II. Worth the train ride just for the Gryo w a little extra Tzikzki (sp?) sauce.

Man, are the beers in the Garden expensive ,lol, and the surrounding bars too!

Seeing 18,000 College Wrestling fans wearing their colors and shirts and hats in a small area is a sight in itself.

Great to see Bernstein (Voorhees HS/Navy) come back from concussion protocol and finish his bout.

McFadden's (DePaul, Va Tech) come back win over the Penn St wrestler Morelli in a consy had both fan bases going back and forth cheering, sections right next to each other)

Rider's Walsh (younger bro of Tj) had one of the most entertaining bouts of the day , tons of scrambles and scoring. Older brother TJ , Cherry HIll, was a Pinning machine in both HS and at Indiana like nobody's business. Stone Cold Pinner !

I kept waiting for Bruno Sammartino to appear from a tunnel, but it never happened. Damn.
Can't wait til 8 !

Gino will not beat Joseph next season....HE IS A BEAST !

First of all, his name is "Geno", not "Gino". If VJ is as good as you claim, he will prove his mettle on the mat, just like everybody else. Don't really understand declarative statements such as your first sentence - I have no idea who will prevail, but am confident that the guy who proves his mettle on the mat will get the nod.

Just think amigo, if you would have redshirted and transferred like they do at Beca, I think you go in at 195 do major damage there.

Exactly. Cenzo is a great wrestler, and so is Geno...Iron sharpens Iron and no matter who wins in the room, WE win on the mat, and in the event somebody gets hurt, we have the next man who is just as much of an asset. Actually, I think depth in the room, is one of Cael's great aspects as a coach...along with every other possible thing haha.

Of course there is that guy from Apple Valley Minnesota coming in soon, can't remember the name though, LMAO...."Mark" somebody....?

Snyder?

We'll see tomorrow night. He IS a truly great FREESTYLE wrestler, but can he beat Gwiz on the mat?

I do agree with you that it was my experience in high school that the absolute best Upper Weight Wrestlers had either been Jr. Wrestlers or wrestled some of the lower-to-mid weights and then had a massive growth spurt because they tended to be good technicians and had lots of "moves" in their repertoire rather than rely solely on "power" and "strength" (e.g., attempt to bull everyone). You can tell a guy like Q did a lot of wrestling at lighter weights - he wrestles like a light to middle weight......just "smooth" and "fluid" with his moves. Not sure exactly what weight Wade Schalles wrestled as an upperclassmen in high school, then in college and during his international career, but another guy that struck me as a guy that "wrestled like a lightweight" at the upper-middle and upper weights.

Correct on all count.

As far as Schalles, hahahaha, I have never seen anyone wrestle like him, ever.

Lightweights are trained to "chain wrestle" and always try something different (especially in neutral and down position) if your favorite "bread & butter" moves aren't working. Upper weights that don't have as big an arsenal seem to panic and don't know what to do if their opponent has scouted them well and taken away their favorite tendencies. Had a coach that often said against the best wrestlers you often win by improving your weakest moves, not getting better at the moves you can do in your sleep.

My problem was that I had a limited number of moves, but was damn good on the mat. They knew what was coming in the third period, but when I lost it was because I didn't score enough.
