So in preparation for next weekends match against Illinois I wanted to see any predictions for the big match at 156 Jason Nolf vs. Isaiah Martinez.

Nolf will win of course....Martinez has never faced a guy like Nolf....

Gonna be high scoring and a lot of scrambling, IMar too powerful right now. IMar by decision 11-8

133 I think JC will have a hard time getting to his offense.....but he very easily could have another wild scramble in him in the 3rd pd. I think JC loses by 1

157 I just don't know what to think other than the obvious that I Mar wins. I could see one of Nolf s shots when he is pressing be off and I Mar slides by and gets a cheap tilt. I'll go w imar by 3.

165 common opponents would indicate this is a Rasheed loss. But I think this is another breakthrough moment and he wins by 1 w scramble that he comes out of being the difference late in the 3rd.

174 Nickal reasserts his dominance against another high ranked opponent. Wins by 5.

I hope Nolf has been working on that duck under when down by 1 pt.

Mouse cleans up the sloppy ankle picks that Dudley countered, puts it to Koepke.

Interested in seeing Gulibon. Ervin is no world-beater, but good enough to be a measuring stick for Jimmy's progress.

Looking forward to all these. I unfortunately think IMAR will win.......I hope I Am wrong. I think Brunson will lose.......I hope I am right.

IMAR by at least (5) the first time they meet. Maybe a little closer at B10's. IMAR just to powerful in all positions. I wonder if Zain has a style that would fair better in that match?

Illinois streams their matches free on their website. Not sure if BTN will block this or not.

Real tough to predict this match. Nolf is basically where Imar was at this time last season. I honestly don't know what to expect, except that it should be a heck of a match to watch.

I have to go Imar by 5, I really hope I am wrong.......I think if it is a 1 or 2 point match that means Nolf is right there he may lose this time but Nolf will eventualy win one....hopefully at Nationals!! I don't think Imar can beat Nolf 3 times in a row, however I said the same thing with Dake-Taylor:(

I'm guessing it'll look like Green-Nolf from last year. Respectable result for Nolf, but Martinez comfortable.

As badly as I want to pick Nolf, I can't. I feel like Imar's strength may be a bit much for Jason. I like LemonPie's Green/Nolf analogy from last year.

Martinez is a point-scoring machine, maybe even a smidgeon moreso than Nolf, but at the very least the 2 are comparable. I think this is right...Martinez with 12 Tech Falls, Nolf with 6, but Nolf has more Falls. Could we see a high-scoring bout, or will they somehow neutralize each other? No idea at all.

Neither of these guys give up takedowns, so I think it will be lower scoring than most people think.
My friend calls me the optimist, Nolf 5-4.

That was my lean as well, though a late flurry by either, or both, could cause the score to go up quickly.

I give the pure wrestling ability to Nolf. But I give the pure strength to IMar, and IMar is not that far away from Nolfs ability. It will come down to Nolfs slick changing moves vs IMars bruit domineering approach. One thing I worry about is Nolfs sometimes overaggressive style. It sets up him getting caught. Down the road though with more time and experience Nolf is just going to be a beast.

It is really hard to predict. The one thing I have seen from Nolf is that his frenetic pace sometimes compromises his positioning. I think IMar will be able to capitalize on those momentary lapses. You just never know, though. The only time I have seen Nolf slow down his pace was in the Scuffle finals. IMar certainly has the ability to slow him down like JoJo Smith did. I don't think Jason beats IMar...that said, it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

I know what you mean about his overaggressiveness but the fact is we haven't seen that in his matches against top competition (Realbuto, Green, Brascetta, JoJo Smith ...) He seems to have a pretty good idea of when he can afford to take risks.

12-7 IMar
Oh ye of little faith. I think the coaches will spot the chink in imars armor and our kitty kitty will stick him in the first match up- think retherford-steiber. Although, BIG 10's and nationals will be another story.

IMar may become a 4x NCAA Champion. He is that good. I expect he will beat Nolf this week. What happens at Big Tens and NCAAs will depend on how much Jason improves and learns from this first bout. He has two months to close any gap. While it might not be noticeable to us fans, Coach Casey said on the radio the other day that Nolf has improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. If he keeps that up, who knows what's possible?

My first thought is IMar wins a close battle by 2-3 pts. Young Nolf will learn from it, though.

I could see Cael telling Jason to just go out there and wrestle how you normally wrestle and see what happens and then make adjustments for the next time they meet. This match could also have a lot less scoring than most people think. You would think that these guys will try and ride the other for a longer period of time due to who they are wrestling and not do their usual take down and let them up routine. In the end I think IMAR is just too strong for Nolf right now. Nolf still has some filling out to do. It will probably be like Zain and Logan's 2nd and 3rd matches.

Grass-seems right to me. Nolf really has no pressure on him for this match. Most expect him to lose. No doubt he personally has been thinking of this match for some time and I suspect the coaches have helped him developed a strategy that they think will allow him to win. As others have mentioned, he needs to straddle the line between aggressive and reckless, have fun, wrestle his style of match and see what happens.

JoJo just lost 11-5 or so to Imar. I bet that film is part of Jason's study sessions for this week.

Rewatched the Green Nolf final from last year's Scuffle, since it's Nolf's last folkstyle loss. Like IMar, Green is stronger than Nolf and has similarly high level mat awareness. Green had 3 TDs, which were all counters to Nolf shots where Nolf didn't clear his legs quickly enough after abandoning his own shot. Green exploited Nolf's loose style perfectly. Leg defense is probably Nolf's greatest vulnerability.

Another observation is that Nolf was better looking in the third than Green, even though he gave up another TD there. Green spent much of the period backing off the mat. If this year's stall rules were in effect, Green would've been hit for 2-3 points over the entire match; which isn't really criticism, because Green would have wrestled differently under the new rules, but Nolf also would've had a better chance if Green were forced to wrestle in the third. That said, Nolf never came close to finishing any of the shots he took.

Finally, Nolf was less active in the match against Green than in any match I've seen this year. Could be that it was at the end of a long day, but I think it might also be that Nolf is far more active this year stringing moves together, both from neutral and on the mat. His setups involve constant motion with multiple, committed-looking feints designed to unbalance. Didn't really see that in the Green match, perhaps b/c it was the last match of the day, perhaps because he's simply improved, perhaps because he was giving Green and his strength too much deference.

I'm 90% there in this thinking. The other 10% says you're only undefeated for your career "once" and you might be progressing faster than this guy right now, so if you can just get past this one your chance of winning only grows.

In any event I have IMar by 5-6 for round 1. Can't wait to dance in the privacy of my home if I'm wrong.

I don't believe Cael (or Cody or Casey) will do or say anything differently than he's been saying to every wrestler, every match, since he's been at Penn State. It's a "process" to him, so the wins and losses are really a result, or product of "the process". This is a really important distinction when he talks to the guys about "enjoying the moment", "don't be afraid to make a mistake", "score more", and so on. If the focus was wins and losses, every loss would be a failure, yet it's "the process", so Cael and Co. turn it into a huge positive.

I'm sure all of you have heard Cael, Casey, or Cody, even Adam or Tank, speak. It's rare to hear them focus on winning or losing, except maybe at the ultimate tournament. Their focus is on the process when I talk with them.

Should be a barn burner for sure. Only thing that I can see about this match is that at this time IMAR maybe is just to strong for Nolf. Reason I say this is I never thought anyone would throw Ness around like IMAR did last year. Also is IMAR somewhat taller than Nolf? That could create a problem also. All I know for sure is I will be watching on big ten should be a great match.

Or Nolf has never faced a guy like Martinez... My heart says Nolf, my brain says Martinez (but my wife says that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so there's that.)
