Disagree, Jimmy Carr won the US Olympic trials a couple months after the Henry Green loss as a 16 year old!!! He is the youngest man in history (the US or anywhere on the globe) to make an International Olympic team and wrestle in the Olympics - and by several years not days or months! Green stalled his @ss off in neutral (which was most of the match). Additionally, Carr had 2 losses in his PA high school career - he lost at regionals his freshman year, but at a lighter weight I believe (States were one & done back then). Again, Carr went on to win the US Olympic Trials a few months after Green match, he won PA States the following year (his Jr year). Jimmy then moved to Kentucky where his older brother Fletcher was living (Fletcher wrestled for University of Kentucky I believe) and went to high school in Kentucky as a Sr....Jimmy also won The Midlands that year as high schooler (only high school wrestler in history to make US Olympic Team....only high school wrestler in history to win The Midlands Tournament!). IOW, Green beating the greatest high school wrestler in history was a way big upset - way bigger!). But except in that bull$hit Folk match, called in a bull$hit Folk fashion, Henry Green doesn't beat Jimmy Carr (i.e., in a Freestyle match where both wrestlers were forced to wrestle for the entire match or be penalized, Jimmy Carr would have Tech'ed Henry Green - the only reason Green won was the bull$hit Folk-fashion it was called).
But Carr's narrow escape against Larry Kepp a year later, where he got hit for stalling three times and where Kepp had a takedown that would have tied the match and sent an exhausted Carr to a 3 minute overtime mitigates Carr's status. Contemporaneous accounts speak of Carr not wrestling for over a period. The refs knew another stalling call would result in two points for Kepp and they swallowed their whistles and didn't call Kepp's td.

Kennerly wins a snorer 3-1 OT on a stall call + escape. Not that he did a ton, but the opponent was hell bent on keeping him 5 ft away at all times. Ref issued the near-extinct double stall in the 3rd, and it was merited.

We can debate the circumstances which there is quite a bit of disagreement about....however, the fundamental question was the biggest upset in PIAA history....and that would be the Henry Green win given that Jimmy Carr is the only high school wrestler in the history of the world, not just PA, to win an Olympic Trials (at 16) and wrestle in the Olympics. He's also the only high schooler in the history of forever to win The Midlands Tournament! IOW, given the timing of all that in regards to Henry Green's win....he beat the greatest high school wrestler in history, so I would say that makes it a bigger upset.

Wade Schalles over John Chatman in 1969 would have to be somewhere on the great PIAA upset list.
I was in the Jaffa and I do not recall Henry Green stalling. I do remember there were probably a dozen whistle starts that were stopped because they both kept starting early.
Jimmy was a known quantity, but so was Henry. Jimmy had not won a regional title yet, nor had he won a state title yet, nor had he made the US Olympic team yet and he not won a Midlands title yet.
Jimmy had not accomplished the victories of his legend yet, so there is no way in the world Henry Green's (who won a state title after beating Jimmy) win over Jimmy Carr is comparable to tonight's 126 outcome.
I get all that. But:
1. Jimmy Carr won one state title - in his junior year. Didn't make it states in 1971 or 1972. Won by the narrowest of margins (and probably should have lost and was called for stalling three times) in 1973. Not a powerhouse high school career. Green went on to win states in 1972. So at that point, he had more state titles than did Carr.
2. Jimmy's success was in freestyle at the international level. And there is no doubt about the fact that he had the best Olympic career of any high school kid by far.
3. Spencer Lee was a three time champ coming into the tournament and had teched DeSanto in last year's final while displaying total dominance over those 3+ years.
4. Add in three world titles for Lee and his resume this year dwarfed Carr's heading into the 1972 regionals (he hadn't wrestled in the Olympics yet).
So I have to believe DeSanto's win in the state finals tops Green's win in regionals, based on the above.
I did not go after DeSanto or the fans cheering him. I posted Gavin's tweet because of the ACL. I get that people love a good underdog story. However, a buddy at the tourney said they were jeering Spencer on his way off the mat so maybe that's what Gavin was referring to.
Didn't 132 have like four top 20 IAW intermat kids in it and was the toughest in the state? Would have been five if DeSanto had gone. Don't know how certain it would have been. So if Suriano loses to, hmm let's say Freddie Rodriguez 2nd round or Ethan Lizak in the quarters, are you going to be saying the same thing? That it wasn't a fluke or because Suriano was injured? The only reason Spencer was out there was because it was his shot at four/undefeated and he barely missed. That's life, injuries and all, and he will be back.
I'm glad PIAAs and Lee/Desanto took our minds off of the grueling wait until noon Thursday.

He did not say he was coming down until 6 days after Spencer tore his ACL...There are a lot of kids in young guns....I take it you didn't listen to the radio after the match....But yes i give him credit cause i am not an Iowa fan....But if everyone is true to themselves we all know that Spencer on 2 good legs techs him and everyone else again....

Jimmy Carr is without question the greatest high school wrestler in the history of the world, let alone PA - his accomplishments have not been even remotely touched or even approached by any other high school wrestler! Lee has never won a "World Championship", let alone 3 LMFAO! Lee has won "Junior World Titles" which are wildly different and not remotely the same....and BTW, Lee is not even remotely close to being the first high schooler to win a Jr. World Title or even multiple Junior Worlds for that matter (believe Martellar won Jr. Worlds as well as countless other high schoolers).

Now, you say what if Freddie Rodriguez...well I suppose yes, but remember it took Austin DeSanto to beat an injured Spencer Lee. Not a 14 seed, but a legit 2 seed. Basically, the equivalent of Suriano losing to Dance. Not even Lizak.

I love it how you are always an expert on a subject once it becomes public record. You had no idea Spencer had any knee issue until now or you would have been blubbering about it nonstop. Do yourself a favor and shut up for a while
