Penn State vs. Ohio State (Friday, Feb. 19th)

How do you see the matches and matchups going?

Wrestle Stat has some very odd "predictions" like Howard losing to Heinselman 16-3.

The match is listed as being on BTN TV:
Fri., Feb. 19No. 3 Penn State at No. 7 Ohio StateTBD

With only one match to feed into the algorithm, it's not surprising that Wrestlestat would show a MD for Heinselman. To me, the perplexing prediction is Romero over Starocci. I don't understand the stats behind that one.

I’m betting Saylortokens that Romero won’t go. Dinged up and you know TRye and his seed protection antics

They also now have Howard over Heinselman 9-6 though I don't completely understand that since the only common opponent was Medley, who Heinselman has handled 4 times in their previous matches. I would presume that it will be a very entertaining match and obviously I'm hopeful that Howard will prevail.

It's been updated with this weekend's matches. Now Starocci by 6-2 decision.

Wrestle stat is data driven. In a normal year they can be somewhat reliable by the end of the season, but this year, with so many Fr going for PSU, the predictions are all over the place ... still better than Flo though.

Ryan usually puts his best line-up on the mat against us. It's important that recruits see OSU as a great program. Or is it a great team? ... I'm so confused.

tOSU wins 149, they’re a slight favorite at 165 and 125 is a tossup if Ryan doesn’t duck Howard. Won’t be pretty for the Buckeyes

I see best case scenario being 30-3 or something like that for PSU and worst case a 20-13 type of win (well, maybe not worst case, but with tOSU winning all of the close bouts). Who knows, it's wrestling and the last two seasons have been weird.

So no robes this match? Bummer

Hope they are stored appropriately for the next time they have a great team.

Could be awhile

I see 133, 141, 184 as definites with bonus for us.

I see 149 definite for them

I see strong lean at 157 for us.

Tossups at 125, 165, 174, 197 and HWT

Only chance is tOSU is for them to take every toss up which I doubt.

My early prediction..
125 Howard dec Heinsleman PSU 3-0
133 RBY maj Decator PSU 7-0
141 NLEE maj Demilio 11-0
149 Sasso dec Bartlett 11-3
157 Berge dec Cleary 14-3
165 Smith dec JLee 14-6
174 Starocci dec Romero 17-6
184 Brooks maj Jordan 21-6
197 Beard dec Hoffman 24-6
285 Orndorff dec Nevills 24-9

If anyone was expecting to see more out of Nevills vs Parris, they should watch Parris dismantle Orndorff. Orndorff has not impressed me (in his other matches too). I’d take Nevills in this one.

Would probably lean Heinselman at 125 though.

Agree on the rest except I think Lee techs Decatur.

Think it’s safe to say Hoffman and his family have had the date of the matchup with Beard circled on their calendars for awhile now 😡

Orndorff has been bad this year. Sure, Parris abused him -- but he quit in that match.

And the Hillger match ... woof. At least when Deuce Rachal hit The Rachal on Stoll, he was trying to win the match -- it was just stupid, and he tried to fight off the fall. Orndorff's Rachal was worse -- he half-assed the throw and then quit on his back.

Nevills would have to be injured or make a mistake to lose this.

My understanding is that DeM won the wrestle off but looked bad in first matches so they interchange Ech. Ech is a muscle head and stalemated Jadin for over 4 minute until he got caught in a craddle. With Lee's ability on top and how bad Ech is on bottom, I see Ryan going with DeM.

What’s the backstory with that?
Others can probably retell the story better than I.... but as I recall, Gavin was interested in PSU. I believe it may have been reciprocal, but when Beard decommitted from Nwestern?, Cael recruited Michael. The Hoffman family was a bit salty as I recall. Mr Hoffman made a comment about throwing away all their PSU pennants.

Some great tests for our young men. Howard with a solid opponent to see his progression towards top ten. Think Cael should go with Verk at 149. He took Sasso into OT last time. So maybe matchup issue with Sasso. C* has a great match with top 5 guy who lost close match with Kem. Kem was unable to get a takedown. Hoffman revenge for Beard. Seth is very good, not Paris good but should handle Orn. Just thoughts.

This is correct.

Adding to it: Cael attended a Montoursville home match, but Hoffman pinned his opponent in about 30 sec.

Cael had recruited Beard before the NW commitment, so the NW decommitment merely reopened that process.

Mr. Hoffman made some regrettable social media posts after Beard committed -- and not just in the immediate aftermath. Some time later, accused Beard of ducking his son.

Gavin at least publicly handled it far better than his dad did. Just one tweet about God's plan, no mention of PSU.

I feel like that score may have already been settled at WNO, and when Garrett beat AC.

The Hoffmans have had season tickets at Rec Hall since even before wrestling was invented, I believe. I can imagine the sting of that situation from their perspective.

Where would he have ducked him?

Didn’t realize Hoffman beat him at WNO (I know nerf just alluded to that) in
2017 (or for that matter that McHenry beat Heinselman, McKee beat Howard or Silva beat RBY) - https://www.sungazette.com/sports/l...offman-beats-no-1-ranked-wrestler-in-country/)

Has there ever been a meme depicting a robe, a black shirt and a pin chain? What a clown show. Rumor has it he considered shaved heads with buckeye tattoos on their crainiums for each victory, but when the kids asked him to play along he said 'what, do you think I am some kind of idiot?'

You have some good stuff in there.
I hadn't realized Heinselman had been there 4 years. He has definitely jumped levels and it should be a good test, granted he hasn't faced Medley since 2019. I go with Howard, who should get better with each match.

We probably won't see Echemendia, but I would love to see the how to get out from bottom lesson from Nick. That would be fun.

I agree with the Verk over Howard call for 149. However I suspect we will see Baraclough. If so, I think it is confirmation Verk is injured more seriously than most are thinking. Still to early for Beau to step out against a guy like Sasso, best to target extra matches one more week at 149.

I don't think Hoffman can deal with Beard's power and it is actually Michael getting revenge for their last meeting in highschool, no? Hoffman is much better as a 197 it should be close.

I talked with one of the Montoursville assistant coaches the summer before Gavin's senior year and asked him if Gavin was being recruited by PSU. He stated that Gavin had trained at the Lorenzo center in freestyle and was familiar with all of the PSU wrestlers and coaches and wanted to wrestle at PSU. He told me that at PSU you have to earn your scholarship and it's not just handed to you. Unfortunately we know how it turned out and I believe there were some hard feelings with the family.

The alleged ducking would've offseason, something like Disney Duals or NHSCAs, I don't recall the specific event.

It was silly on its face, and also transparently the kind of thing Mr. Hoffman never would've said if Gavin were at PSU.

I think Heinselman has made some solid improvements from last season and he will be an excellent test for Robbie. Right now Is think his experience gives him a very slight edge over Robbie
I REALLY hope we get to see Starocci vs Romero. Another W over a highly rated opponent is just what the doctor ordered for Starocci’s progression.

Well maybe Tan Tom will trot Chase Singletary out there on Friday night at 197 and spoil the big rematch. He sent Chase out against Warner and he got manhandled in the Iowa match. I'm sure Hoffman would have given Warner a better match. Singletary looks small for a guy who moved from heavy to 197 and the BTN announcers said the same thing.

Chase is a bit of an enigma. A top albeit undersized heavy recruit at the time, who proved to be undersized at this level. Now back down at 197, he looks oddly noodle-armed and undefined so to speak. He looks like he needs at least a year on the weights to hang with 197s. Lifting weights is TanToms big deal, you would think he would be riding heard on that part of the process for Chase. I think Hoffman is significant better at 197 right now without a doubt.

Just read a headline over on Flo and am wondering what I'm missing here!

"Ohio State versus Michigan, the greatest rivalry in all of sport" HUH
