Penn State vs. Ohio State (Friday, Feb. 19th)

Did DeMilio beat out Echemendia at 41 or is Ech hurt?
Ech's leg/knee/ankle was torqued pretty badly vs Eierman as he was being turned. He fought the move for a while, then screamed and gave up the pin as he was grabbing his leg. It was already wrapped, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is really hurt.

It looked to me to be more of an ankle injury, as it turned when Jaydin ran the cradle over.

Yeah, it wasn't clear whether the injury was to his knee, ankle, or both. The ankle twisted much more severely, but his whole leg was bending the wrong way and there was also sideways force on the knee, too, which was already wrapped going in to the match. When he yelled and grabbed his leg, he grabbed the knee and laid on the mat afterwards grabbing the knee, but then the B1G guys said it was his ankle, so who knows (I'm not interested enough in OSU wrestling to get an update). Regardless, it wouldn't surprise me if he has a significant injury.

That’s a shame. I'm no Eierman fan, but I liked the fact that he balled up Echemendia after the Twitter exchanges between them.
I was looking forward to Nick Lee doing the same.

Hey Roar,
I can't figure out how to get it over here but it is on Flo's "News" page from Feb. 12th under "
Ohio State Goes For Fifth Straight Win In Ann Arbor

Excerpt:

"Ohio State versus Michigan, the greatest rivalry in all of sport.

Well, at least in football. And sometimes in basketball, usually. And for sure, in the mind of Ohio State head wrestling coach Tom Ryan."

Thanks all. Was looking for it as a headline, not the first sentence in an article. The sentence after it sort of puts it in perspective. Nothing here.

Celtic and Rangers want a word. As do Boca and River Plate
Amazing rise back from the bottom for Rangers, and an absolutely shocking weakness in Celtic’s season.
After something like 10 years of Celtic on top, this year is a welcome change imo.
A great rivalry, despite the very unfortunate religious connections.

I'm curious. What are the odds that weather is going to play a role in holding, postponing or canceling this match on Friday? Not sure if the team is planning to drive or fly to Columbus. Anyone have an educated observation or inside information? Penn State has a good Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences program that athletic teams no doubt consult. (It is considered the best in PA and top 10 in the country, I think.).

Further down in the article:

"The winter storm warning issued for the Columbus area expired early Tuesday, with snow totals generally ending up in the range of 3-4 inches."

If they can't get I-70 and the Columbus area freeways cleared on T-W-Th ...

Biggest chance of the upset

bartlett
JLee
Or Seth

I feel like this is one of those wholly $h1t moments and Sammy gets upset. PSU has had a history of these middle weight shockers.

Best line of 2021 so far.

A more one-sided rivalry, you'll never find.

PS, here's the perfect trophy for that rivalry. Jammen can keep it, win or lose.

LOL. Seriously, that has to be the dumbest and ugliest "trophy" in all of sports. It appears to be comprised of leftovers in someone's basement combined with a $40 gift card to Home Depot.

Just from eye test, Orndorff and Seth are basically equal this season. If Seth's knee is fine, I think that's a tossup. I can see our 149 wrestling Sasso close since he's naturally a counter wrestler/scrambler but unless it's Nick, nobody is actually beating Sammy.

J Lee if he can get out from bottom I think has a shot. He hasn't looked right this year tbh. He has his struggles on bottom (why he couldn't beat Wittlake/Bullard last year) but against some damn good opponents, he was able to take them down at will and even turn them. Now he is struggling to get out and his offense is seemingly gone as well. Without a doubt the lockdown hurt him a ton. I know we need to temper expectations for freshman but other than Amine, Joe's opponents he's wrestled so far are the kind of guys I'd expect him to bonus ... maybe even TF. (He did bonus Spray but was up 12-2 after 1 and then got ridden out)

Example of Joe's offense we saw pre lockdown:
Pinned Connor Flynn at the Scuffle last year (same guy that's beaten Mekhi before and held Cenzo to a decision) Like absolutely ragdolled him.
Beat Jake Wentzel (the ACC champ and the guy who just "beat" Mekhi) 10-3. As dominant of a decision as you can get.
TF'ed Randy Meneweather from AF (not the top notch opponents but looking at his WrestleStat profile, he almost never gets bonused let alone in the 1st through tilts)
Pinned Zach Hartman (#9 ranked per Flo) in 21 seconds with a bow and arrow last November (it was free but that was a pin in folk as well)

Last year, he scored 31 points against Lehigh's backup. Not a top notch opponent but that's the level of offense I am used to seeing from Joe. He really looked like a bigger Nick that still needs to work on bottom. (Nick was pretty solid on bottom even as a freshman unless it was a super savvy rider like McKenna)

Bottom line ... that's the Joe that is an AA level wrestler.

For whatever reason it seems like a lot of guys have been very timid on offense. Even RBY has seemed a quarter step slow and hesitant to let it fly at times. Carter has been super hesitant the entire year. Nick Lee was a bit lackluster.

Howard has the same number of TDs as Starocci this year, ignoring Starocci's TF win in an extra match. Think about that.

Anyone want to offer up team score predictions by weight ? How many is psu favored ? Etc etc.

Brooks looked off last week even. The guy he wrestled got pinned by Maryland's 174 in that guy's only win this year. Dude was taking it to him. This is a completely new challenge for Cael tbh ... a season that starts in January then immediately gets locked down, no open tournaments, half the duals get cancelled and we're basically a month away from NCAAs.

I know we'll never know what's going on but it's been theorized Cael is taking an all out approach (especially now) to get conditioning up to speed for March. Just need to trust he always has a plan.

Just as I read this last sentence the rivals ad on the right side of my screen showed a wrestling article to click on and the picture was of Cael with half a smirk. Not sure if purely coincidental or a sign.........

Others can probably retell the story better than I.... but as I recall, Gavin was interested in PSU. I believe it may have been reciprocal, but when Beard decommitted from Nwestern?, Cael recruited Michael. The Hoffman family was a bit salty as I recall. Mr Hoffman made a comment about throwing away all their PSU pennants.
yes, and a bit salty is an under statement. :) a good friend of mine son wrestle on summer teams with the Hoffman boys.

I'm guessing the Maryland match is on Monday now (which makes sense) to give more turn around time and flexibility in getting back to Happy Valley given weather conditions and contingencies, time to recover, time get down to weight, and time to get a practice session in after the tOSU match. Especially since there will be no fans at the match who would normally have Sunday off and traveling to U. Park.

Does Cael rely on cardboard cutout fans in the stands? Might be interesting to paint a few familiar faces on them—guys from earlier PSU teams (Ruth, Wright, Molinaro, etc.), Tan Tom and the Brand Bros confabulating and commiserating in a corner up in the rafters, and others.

The team looks like my kids swim team used to look in the 2 weeks before they began their taper.

I could be full of crap, but here is my guess. There will be some training tapering leading into Friday's match against OSU and many on here will shake their heads wondering where has that been. They will look a bit more sluggish against Maryland and everybody will again be wondering why they look so tired after looking so energetic Friday.

Bernie needs to be in the stands.
