PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

Joseph lifting Marinelli off the ground in the first period and then getting the inside trip for a takedown must have boosted his confidence he could put him to his back again in the third. It was a gamble he didn't need to take, but did. I thought VJ might have had two with the first (non-failed) inside trip.

He'll now get Marinelli in B10 semis.

After that, hard to tell. McFadden is still undefeated. If Cenzo beats Martinez at B10s, the rematch could be in the NCAA semis. If he loses to Martinez, then he'll get McFadden in the semis.

Another wrinkle: McFadden isn't a lock to win out, either. He has 2 matches left with NC State's Hamann, who has wrestled him tough in the past.

Regardless, if Cenzo beats Marinelli at B10s, he's no worse than the 3 seed at nationals.

I should modify what I wrote. In most reffing situations, the person that goes out on the mat taps the ref with a wrapped towel. However, after I posted my response I actually made an effort to watch what was happening at the BJC. The lady that went out near the end of each period would count down the clock, but did not tap the ref. If you watch enough duals, you'll see it done both ways. When a 2nd ref is on the mat (as happens at NCAAs), part of the responsibility is to notify the lead ref when the clock is about to expire (typically by counting down), and the person that comes out on the mat is a secondary notice that time has run out (with the caveat that there are situations, like a potential pin along the edge of the mat, where the 2nd ref may be too occupied looking at the boundary, or other issues, and as such the person that comes out becomes the primary notifier of the time).

I just read threw their entire dual thread. It is a complete embarrassment. Why I even go over there is beyond me? A bunch of whining, delusional, and down right angry adults. Obviously they hate PSU and use every excuse in the book. But the saddest thing is the way they rip apart their wrestlers on their performances. No wonder why they are losing the recruiting war.

Same boring talk as always about roids, cheating, ripping Cael, Hall, even the crowd, along with all the excuses and vitriol toward PSU, but I'm floored at how they shred their own wrestlers. They are so negative it almost sounds like they are talking about our guys.

I doubt that any PSU fans will disagree with this post:

"It's hard to light a fire under a moist log. Penn St. has better wrestlers just like if we played Alabama in football or Ohio St. in basketball. We are undermanned no matter how you want to look at it. We had a great ride with Gable but he's not coming back. Get over it and live with it for now."

For all I expected it to be a dumpster fire (and it is) I saw more people calling out the Sandusky jerks and PED talk as embarrassing. Of course, Vodka wasn't one of the ones admonishing the jerks, but there were SOME level-headed folks.

I can't understand why our fans would want to go on their board at all. They aren't special in any way. They are fans of a has been team that is going to be contending for the 3rd place at best in the B1G for the foreseeable future. Why go there and feed their fantasies that they matter? Let the few knowledgeable and courteous ones come here if they want....

I found myself thinking things are really bad if Vodka is the voice of reason. ;)

In another thread I mentioned if you dig hard enough on HR you could come up with the cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, part 2. Turns out you don't need to dig too hard.

Stoll is literally the most boring wrestler I've ever seen. Even the announcers said he doesn't go for takedowns, only counters.

Personally, I go there occasionally because wrestling is a fringe sport with maybe 3 active message boards on the entire internet. As long as you can ignore the morons, it's a decent place to pick up some info. Tonight though...yikes.

What did they expect? This duel went about as well as could be expected from their point of view except NN beating Stoll. S. Lee gets a pin, Turk keeps it to a regular decision, Sorenson keeps it to a regular decision, Marinelli upsets VJ. They had to know they were going to get stomped at 174 and 184.

Stoll was losing by 1 with a minute left and the thought of taking a shot didn't even enter his mind. I swear I could almost hear his inner monologue: "Push push push push push."

I didn't find the HR board all that bad. THey are HR fans. They represent less than 1% of the fans, just like our board is not representative of all PSU fans. That is what ticks me off. When folks who read any board and pass along things they read and make it sound like it is the entire fan base. Can't understand why anyone would reply to Vodka or others in a 'debate' more than twice as well. What is being proven? OK... gotta rewatch that meet, apologize for the rant. Wouldn't it be cool to see Nolf vs Buffalo? That would say a lot

You're right, it's not all the fans. But there's certainly some crazies over there....like enough to make up a hospital ward ;)
 
Overall, a nice tune-up against a tough (but face it, inferior) opponent heading into the postseason. Can't believe we get Zain at home only one. more. time. Sometimes, I hate senior day....

I don't know. Joseph has the takedown two, Marinelli is leaning backwards, his back exposed and rocks back and forth on his elbows as Joesph climbs up his torso and holds him for nearly a two count. The count should have started as soon as his elbows were supporting his weight and his back was exposed. McCormick did not start his count until Joesph climbed up and held him still for a sec and a half.

The back exposure was closer to a 4 count than a two count.

It was the way it all went down. Marinelli gets the upset at 165 with the big 6-point move, putting Iowa up 14-9. Iowa fans are stoked and even thinking they might win the dual with a little more magic at 197 and 285. Then, boom at 174, boom at 184, and in about 75 seconds of mat time, Iowa is down by 7 points and the dream is shattered. Follow that up with losses at 197 and 285, and you have a bunch of very deflated/angry/bitter Iowa fans.

If the objective is to score team points at every weight during every dual and tournament and we use the term "hole" as a weight where points aren't scored, then PSU definitely has some holes.
