PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

15,998 attendance -- a new NCAA indoor dual meet attendance record

285: #6 Nick Nevills vs. #3 Sam Stoll

I went back and forth on this bout in the KYPSUW competition. I can make a strong case for either of these guys to win the match. As such, I'm looking forward to this contest.

Per 1
Nothing thru 1:30. No shots thru 2 min. Nevills takes a shot, nothing. Stoll worked a 2-on-1 and nearly dropped from it to a low single, but missed the leg. End

Per 2
Nevills defers, and Stoll takes bottom. Stoll up quickly, and is out in 11 sec, 0-1. Nevills reaches, nothing. Stoll reaches, nothing. Nevills reaches, nothing. 15 sec left. End. RT at 11 sec for Nevills

Per 3
Nevills takes bottom. He rolls and is out in 4 sec, 1-1. Stoll in on a leg, Nevills sprawls, and gets behind for the TD, 3-1. Stoll works to his feet, but they are OOB before he gets out. 1:22 left. Stoll works to his feet, and he's out, 3-2. RT at 45 sec, so not a factor. 1 min left. 30 sec left. Stoll reaches, nothing. End. 3-2 victory by Nevills

28-13, PSU wins the dual

Nice match!! Big win for Nick. Awesome job by Mark and Bo after the Cenzo loss.

To be honest, Cenzo was in total control of match. Maranelli can’t take him down. Cenzo didn’t have to try that throw, but I love that he did. Fearless! Don’t see Maranelli winning another one vs Cenzo down the road. Will be nice since that should be semi match in BIGs

dang, Nick is on a roll. was confident we'd win 4 of the last 5 matches, but didn't pick those 4.

PSU finishes 9-0 in the B1G, and win the regular season conference title (they guaranteed that they would at least be co-champs when they defeated tOSU).

Byers announces that Zain is the Ridge Riley Award Winner

Yay Nevills. Seed, baby!

Enormous! Beat him for Big 3rd and avoid a monster in the quarters

I thought the same thing...VJ went big and Marinelli won fair and square. Won't happen again.

Byers interviews Coach Casey Cunningham

- it was an awesome environment. We continue to sell out Rec Hall and the BJC
- nolf goes down, others have to step up. Vincenzo was in control but gave up a 6-point move. He'll learn from that
- there's little things in the Vincenzo situation that we'll tell him, or have him tweak, but we do want him to go for his things
- Nick Lee wanted a major and got taken down. Sometimes these things happen. It makes our guys great at the end of the year.
- Rasheed's effort: great TD at the end, it was a sweet double. Cassar and Rasheed we think could go deep in the tournament.
- have you ever previously had 2 guys wrestling so well this late in the season? not answered. Perhaps Ruth and Browne. Cassar and Rasheed push each other, and help each other get better. We'll have to make a tough decision.
- Iowa has a tough team up and down the lineup. Nevills would like to score more points, but he's figuring things out, and we want to keep that going forward
- we don't take any match for granted, and we won't do so against Buffalo. Their guys are tough, and wrestle hard.
- everything is progress toward the end goal

Really? Have you never seen that before?
The person (not always a girl) that takes the ref comes out and at 5 seconds usually starts giving a count down so that the ref knows that the end of the period is near. The individual then taps the ref when the clock is at 0:00, and the ref blows their whistle.

The wrestlers, after years of wrestling, are pretty accustomed to stopping on the whistle. Like the ref, they can be so focused on the competition that they don't really hear the buzzer.

I liked seeing the girl; she made me horny.

So, less than 10 minutes after the match ends, there is new action in a Sandusky thread and a new thread calling for PED testing. But, Vodka, I am sure it is just a coincidence o_O

Nice match buy Alex. Joseph wins that comfortably if he doesn't horse it there. But that is his style and will learn.

So true. Joseph looked like he was going for a big move when he didn't need it. Marinelli
is a typical Iowa defensive wrestler. If Joseph had wrestled smart, Marinelli couldn't take him down
if they wrestled for two hours.

I know many may not care for it but my favorite part of the match was when Hall goes out after the upset, pins his kid in 30 seconds and then “smashes the hammer” in his celebration
I don’t mind it either. After a big win you should show emotion. Not sure pinning Gunther qualifies, but it was big after Joseph lost. I just get tired of the fans who constantly talk about how PSU wrestlers “would never act like that” when a guy from another team shows emotion.

Congrats on the win it was an intense dual meet up until y'all took the wind out of our sails at 74-84. Maybe Wilcke didn't think he'd be up right after Marinelli lol. TBH I kind of expected Stoll to win the match in the same way that Nevills won, off of a counter to his shot. But I think the two are very close and I expect another tight rematch for 3rd at B1Gs. I'm excited for the Marinelli-Joseph rivalry this year and the next 2 years. I thought Joseph might run away with it, he made his 2 TD's look so easy (and personally looked like he had 2 NF on his inside trip), but I think he pushed his luck going for another inside trip when he didn't need to, but Marinelli demonstrated his own power in that 2nd inside trip position. Unless someone beats IMAR at B1Gs, Marinelli and Joseph are looking at the 3 & 4 seeds at NCAAs in some order with McFadden probably getting the 2, or the 1 if IMAR goes down.

What does that loss do to Cenzo’s seed and potential semis matchup at BIGs? TIA

HR is kinda fun right now, as that board derails for the evening. However, I recommend "read only" mode.

Edit - Facts are in short supply tonight on HR.

I'm sure this loss stings for Cenzo, but he has that confidence and air of inevitability that Michael Jordan had in the 1998 NBA playoffs when the Bulls were struggling to get past Indiana to face the well rested and surging Utah Jazz. MJ calmly told reporters that Utah would "still have to come through Chicago." We all know how that ended for the Jazz.

Actually, I thought Nevills took the shot after his escape and Stoll countered. Nevills ended up countering the counter via the limp leg.

I'm in Las Vegas for the Flyers game tomorrow. I asked the sports book here for a market on this dual but they told me no because they can't get accurate injury info (thanks Cael). I can't watch live because we have dinner then a show.

Should I try to avoid the result until Tuesday? Is listening to Byers on delay tomorrow morning an option? Will the matches be on Flo by then? Or should I just try to follow as soon as I can?
Full video on BIG.

I think you're right now that you say that, I was just remembering Stoll taking that shot/reshot and forgot about the sequence leading up to it.

Joseph's inside trip should have had 2 back points to go with the TD.
When I get home and watch it again I would bet it's closer to a 4count than a 2 count and in McCormick's limited abilities it was a 1 count.
Marinelli stood in there. It was a good win for him. Made me nervous for about a minute.

I think it was a good call by McCormick, just a 1 count.

nice dual. Hate always starting in a hole though. I am always cautious of upsets and the odds will play out at times. You know it is going to happen and when your guys are top ranked, the upsets are usually not good for ya (with the exception of Cassar). BTN - Gibbons is such an Iowa fan. Close your eyes and listen. Not a lot of enthusiasm tonight as he new what was happening. Ironhead called a far and then near cradle for Hall and Bo (even Casey didn't correct him) but oh well. Big win by NN but want to see him add a shrug and get an angle for a shot. Good win by NLee - he is still improving and learning... BoP didn't get the 2nd stall call against him cause Kemdog wasn't doing anything either - staying parallel. Stoll simply pushes - very ugly to watch...197 sucks (in a good way)... what a tough deal for one of them
