PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

Two of Iowa's three wins were PA guys. The other was an Ohio guy. No Iowans scored points.

I have been a Hawkeye fan for a long time, but appreciate great wrestling regardless. Hats off to Penn State. Great turn out and atmosphere. You look like the Hawkeye teams of the past and it is fun to watch no matter the outcome. Great coaching and a talented team you have, be proud. We will butt heads better in the next couple years I think.

Oldparatroop, appreciate your congeniality, we are fortunate for the team/coaches on staff. Iowa wrestlers were in counter mode for most of this meet, even when losing. Thoughts? Undermanned or product of coaching?

Honestly, I think Gable used to make great wrestlers out of local hard nosed Iowa boys who didn't have "blue chip" talent. We just don't do that anymore. I think kids are better now then they used to be coming out of high school and who in their right mind wouldn't want to wrestle for Cael? Don't get me wrong, I love the Brands brothers and they are as good at coaching as any. We are still damn good, just in reverse roles at the moment. I am a bit excited for the next couple years. My only real complaint at the moment with our boys is the intensity (in some) is not there. You guys have it and the team feeds off it. (also, Iowa high school wrestling is in a bit of a slump I think) Anyway, just my thoughts.

This is one of the oldest fantasys from the cornfields of Iowa. It's a midwest dream, like "I could have wrestled for Gable". Have fun with that, just don't say it out loud.

You have me on mute so how would you know? Genius, this guy.
Apparently, ignored over here doesn't translate to over there. Then, I had to unignore you for today to read your explanation that I had to look too far back (front page- top three threads) to find PED or Sandusky statements. I told you they were cyclical. Don't worry, I am sure by the end of the day I will go back to the bliss of a Vodkaless board.

It was the way it all went down. Marinelli gets the upset at 165 with the big 6-point move, putting Iowa up 14-9. Iowa fans are stoked and even thinking they might win the dual with a little more magic at 197 and 285. Then, boom at 174, boom at 184, and in about 75 seconds of mat time, Iowa is down by 7 points and the dream is shattered. Follow that up with losses at 197 and 285, and you have a bunch of very deflated/angry/bitter Iowa fans.

Perhaps their delusion came crashing down into reality.

Rewatch the Sorenson/Zain match. Ref made a huge mistake at around 1:50 in the first period. There was a restart and Zain wasn't on the enlbow, but already down by the wrist. Impact on the match? None. Zain wins either way.

Is getting good officiating THAT hard?

Did Moore drop for seeding purposes? Moore’s is never in the match against a backup. Censor in complete control.

I am lost.

Look at the whole season, better wins and loss than anyone else. Might be different after B1Gs

I'm as concerned about Cenzo as I was last year after the Subjeck match. I'm not. He went for something big that he didn't need to. A tad bit overconfident, but that is his bread and butter. Better now than in March.

I agree, and suspect that our remaining 3 undefeateds also took away a lesson from Cenzo’s loss which will serve them well going into March. Interesting to compare the difference between PSU’s response to a big upset tonight and OSU’s response last Saturday. Mark and Bo came out and avenged their teammate’s loss with authority and devastating exactness. Captain America, despite his many gifts and admirable traits, could muster only a decision in response to Kollin Moore’s indignity.

Also interesting to note the coaches responses: Tan Tom screaming at Moore at the edge of the mat vs. Casey post match saying no problem regarding Cenzo, we will work on it.

Okay, you're grasping now. Let's just enjoy it. o_O

It's spelled fantasy. I grew up in Iowa, and it is no fantasy. Do you remember Jessie Whitmer? Not a blue chip. Tom and Terry were not blue chips (at that time it was Dan Knight from Clinton, IA). Mark Ironside was not a blue chip (at that time it was Jeff McGuiness). Doug Schwab was not a blue chip. Mike Uker was not a blue chip, Chad Zapital (he also beat Brands in high school)was not a blue chip, the Streicher brothers were not blue chip recruits. There are more but that should make my point.

Try disagreeing without being snarky. Also, know what you are talking about.

Concur. I've seen this mentioned a few times now. It's mildly interesting trivia IMO, nothing more.

I say this as a native Pennsylvanian, so board, don’t jump down my throat. Pennsylvanians are genetically hard wired to believe that the more local something it is the better. That’s not only untrue (eg, I believe 2 if the 3 losers were pa boys), it’s just irrelevant. Particularly if you fashion yourself to be the New York Yankees of your sport. Even they had the St. Louis Browns after all.

Nothing to jump down as you are absolutely correct. However, it is true of EVERYONE, not just PA natives. True of Iowa, OK, Minny, Ohio, NJ, and every state in the union and every country in the world.

PA boys were 4-1.

Iowa boys were 0-4.

Call it irrelevant, but don't call it untrue.

Not sure if it was mentioned earlier in the thread, and I am not reading all the pages again. So I just rewatched a bunch of the dual yesterday. Why did Stoll give Nevills a little shove after the match? I rewinded it a few times and I just don’t get what the shove was for. Probably Stoll was just a little frustrated? Obviously not really a big deal just seemed weird to me. Did I miss something?

James, I believe that topic was discussed in the thread titled An Odd thing Last Night.

If each school could only use recruits from it's home state I like our chances!
