I just listened to Ironhead call of Nickal bout. He's giving bio of wrestlers when bout starts. Ref slaps mat and call Nickal got pinned. It's hilarious.
... and yet that might have been one of the greatest moments ever -- while Byers paused to collect himself, the crowd was dead silent, and the only thing you heard was the PA announcer declaring Bo Nickal the winner. He totally blew that call - mentioned that late last night as I listened to some of the archived stuff
Agree. Was listening on PSU Radio, and things were crazy after the Hall loss. I think I remember Byers saying there would be a 60 second break, and then 184 started and you could hear the crowd really into it. My heart sunk went Byers yelled that Nickel got pinned, and there seemed to be a 10 second dead silence and all you could hear was the PA announcer say "Nickel with the pin" and I was like WTF? Byers had a bad angle and knew he blew it, and basically kept re-running it for the remainder of the broadcast at 197 and HWY and then the post show. You could tell he felt bad about that call... and yet that might have been one of the greatest moments ever -- while Byers paused to collect himself, the crowd was dead silent, and the only thing you heard was the PA announcer declaring Bo Nickal the winner.
One big criticism I have of him - he seriously belabors some points, especially potentially dangerous calls.Agree. Was listening on PSU Radio, and things were crazy after the Hall loss. Watch the video. Some Iowa fans in the background were pumping fists in the air after the pin. So right on the mat and they couldn't tell either.I just listened to Ironhead call of Nickal bout. He's giving bio of wrestlers when bout starts. Ref slaps mat and call Nickal got pinned. It's hilarious.

If you watched the match on BTN, you would have seen that Bo came dangerously close to pinning himself when he pulled back with the spladle. His shoulders went flat for just a moment. However, I'm pretty sure that the ref was focusing on the position of Brooks, and couldn't see both simultaneously.
Which brings up an interesting question. If a wrestler plants his own shoulders at the same time as the opponent, is there a rule that the pin is awarded to the wrestler in the offensive position?
BTW, I thought Bo's reaction to Brooks single was awesome. As soon as I saw how he had caught his opposite leg, I new what was going to happen. Did anyone one else catch the expression on Brooks face when he was walking off the mat?

I had the same vantage-point he did (I was sitting three rows behind), and I thought Nickal was stuck too. I didn't see the spladle on Brooks, or, for that matter, Brooks' shoulders, just the fact that Nickal was flat. Glad to hear I wasn't the only person who thought that happened. It was obvious from the BTN telecast that The Mullet was being spladled early on and then pinned. Don't think Bo's shoulders were really that close to the mat.
Is a spladle a spladle no matter how it's done? Don't you normally cover the far leg with your outside leg, instead of the inside? So, was this actually a reverse spladle? If Nickal had covered with his far leg, his back would have been further from the mat.
BTN was showing it from the Spladle side - did not realize his shoulders ever got flat or close. It was clear what Bo was doing when he went over the top, locked on outside leg at knee and started lifting. Gibbons even said, "Look out, Nickal is looking Spladle".
BTN later showed a replay where there was a clear view of Bo's shoulders. He did put himself flat just for a moment. However, it might not have been long enough to call as a fall even if the ref did see it. I'm pretty sure the ref was focusing on Brooks anyway, and not Bo. I doubt that any decent ref would have done differently.
hard to tell exactly, but it appeared the ref was already into his slap when bo's shoulders hit the mat. would have to see a slo-mo to be sure.BTN later showed a replay where there was a clear view of Bo's shoulders. Glad to hear you're calling Matt Sorochinsky a better-than-average ref! Now, of course, if the ref had been just an average ref ....
