U20’s August 14th-20th

Matthew Singleton up next with his second match of the day. Will be wrestling Hajduch from HUN. Singleton should win this match. Mendez follows him on the same mat. And here we go. This time Singleton only has his right hand and wrist taped up. Singleton with a td right into a lace! Gets 4 turns and that’s it!!! 10-0 tech for Singleton. He will wrestle Grigoryan in the quarters. Grigoryan was 3rd at Euro’s. Definitely a winnable match which would put him in the semis

Mendez coming up against Sakybaev from KGZ. Sakybaev was 3rd at U20 Asians and 2nd at U23 Asians. Good test but Mendez is the favorite especially after beating Zubal. Sakybaev goes on the clock first. Mendez up 1-0 with a shot clock point. Pretty attack from Mendez and he gets a Td and then a gut right before the break. 5-0 at the break. Mendez looks super solid in every position. Not giving anything up defensively and taking smart attacks. Right as I type that he gets caught flat footed and gives up a td. 5-2. 1 min left. Mendez in on a single and he converts for 2. Big td right there. 7-2 with :37 left. Getting a bit chippy here at the end but Mendez closes it out. 7-2 win and he’s into the quarterfinals where he will see Berghi from MDA. Mendez should be a considerable favorite in that match

Shapiro up next against Nabiyev from AZE. I couldn’t find any info about Nabiyev. AZE is usually tough but I think Shapiro cruises. Lilledahl vs Ozbek also coming up. Ozbek from TUR is tough. 7th last year at U20’s. 3rd at U20 Euro’s and 2nd at U23 Euro’s this year.

Hopefully Shapiro finishes this quickly or I might pull away to follow Lilledahl. Shapiro with the first td. 2-0. Nabiyev with a td and an exposure to go up 4-0. Meyer should have bailed on the position and just gave up 2. 4-2 at the break. Lots of attacks from Shapiro but can’t break through. 2:00 left. 1:00 left and still 4-2. Shapiro gets a Td and goes up on criteria!! :41 left. Nabiyev in deep but Shapiro counters for 2! 6-4 and that’s how it ends. Tough match and big win!! Shapiro with his toughest match coming up next against the Russian Baitukaev. Baitukaev is a U17 world champion as well and teched both of his opponents so far today

Lilledahl up against Ozbek. Missed the first minute watching Shapiro. Still 0-0. Ozbek goes on the clock. Ozbek looks like a grown man. Much bigger than Luke. 1-0 Lilledahl. 1-0 at the break. Lilledahl will almost assuredly go on the clock here soon unless he scores. No real great attacks that first period. Beautiful double by Luke and he runs him out for 1. 2-0 now. Lilledahl is so smart. Big point to keep him from going on the clock and now he’s holding center perfectly. In on a single pulls it up and gets 2!! 4-0. Ozbek in deep but Lilledahl defends and only gives up 1. :50 left and it’s 4-1. Lilledahl with another Td! 6-1. He hits a really pretty sweep single as soon as Ozbek digs an underhook. And that’s it!! 6-1 win for Lightning Luke. Into the quarterfinals

McDanel coming up now against Japan in his first match of the day. I have zero info on the Japanese wrestler. Hamada close to a td but McDanel scrambles out. McDanel goes on the clock but he immediately gets a Td to go up 2-0. Hamada gets a reversal to make it 2-1. Nice single right into a lace and that’s it!! 12-1 McDanel. He will get the Polish wrestler next

Big match at 57kg between Bazarbayev of KAZ and Ahmad Javan from Iran. Javan up 4-0 late in the first. Javan goes up 6-0 with 2 min left. Javan looks big and very good. Will be a super good match with Luke if they meet up. Bazarbayev gets 1. 6-1 with :30 left. And that’s how it ends. Good win for Javan and he moves into the quarterfinals

Singleton will be first to wrestle in the quarterfinals. Win here and he will wrestle for a medal. And we are about to start. The Armenian with a full beard. Blood time early on. Back to wrestling. Grigoryan goes on the clock first. Step out point for Grigoryan stops the clock and it’s 1-0 for the wrestler from ARM. Singleton is bleeding again. 1:07 left in the first period. Td Grigoryan on the edge. Could have went either way I think. 3-0. And it’s 3-0 at the break. Couple attacks from Singleton but defended well. All 3 points came right on the edge. Singleton coming out hard. Deep single but Grigoryan somehow kicks out. Singleton stays with it and gets 2 though. 3-2. Another Td for Singleton and then 3 guts to break it open!! 10-3 now. 1:30 left. Step out to make it 10-4. Grigoryan in on a deep shot but Singleton defends and gets a stalemate. :30 left. Step out and a caution and 1 against Singleton. 10-6 now. He hangs on and wins 10-6! Huge win and into the semifinals! He now will wrestle the gold medal favorite Jaglan from India

Mendez, Lilledahl, and McDanel all coming up about the same time. I’ll prioritize Lilledahl but hopefully they won’t all go at the same time especially considering they are all on different mats. Shapiro follows amended also so we have 4 huge matches in a row

Mendez will hit the mat first against Moldova. Win here and he’s in the semifinals. Berghi goes on the clock. Kid looks huge compared to Mendez. 1-0. And then he runs around him for 2 more. Then a gut to go up 5-0. 5-0 at the break. Mendez wins 13-4 and into the semis!!

McDanel and Lilledahl are both up now as well. Going to go to Lilledahls match

Lilledahl against Harutyunyan from ARM. Not sure if he is related to the senior level medalist with the same last name. ARM on the clock. Luke gets 1 but Harutyunyan gets a Td right after. 2-1. Lilledahl right back with his td to go up 3-2. Step out with :01 before the break. 4-2. Lilledahl with a 1 and then ARM back with his stepout to make the score 5-3. ARM is gassed and calling for injury time. Cold spray saves the day again! 1:15 left. Lilledahl holding center. Single for Luke which he takes to the edge and gets 1. Big point to go up 3. 6-3 with :30 left. Another Td for Luke! 8-3 and that’s how it ends! Lilledahl into the semis!!

What a f’ing round by the US!!! All 5 are into the semifinals. Couldn’t have went any better. Lilledahl will have winner of AZE and IRI. Mendez gets Toprak from TUR. Shapiro will see Julian George or Salviz from GER. Singleton with the tough Jaglan from IND and McDanel will wrestle either Kurugliyev or Babaloo from IRI. I think Shapiro is the biggest favorite followed by Mendez and then Lilledahl. Singleton and McDanel will be underdogs but have been wrestling great. Time for a couple hour nap before semis. Going in late to work today and probably dragging ass but it’s worth it

I don't know how you've kept up and posted about all our guys this morning. Hell...I have trouble just finding our guys on the 3 mats. Lol. You are a beast!

Ha! Matches on my laptop with this forum and Flo arena on my phone. Lots of back and forth but with arena I can track who is coming up pretty well.

Super impressed with our guys today. They all came ready to wrestle right out of the gate. I think I’m most impressed by Lilledahl. For a high school kid he is so technically sound and has some absolutely beautiful attacks. The sweep single he hit multiple times right as his opponent digs an underhook is a thing of beauty. Pretty sure those were in his second match. Definitely watch if you get the chance. Shapiro dismantling the 2021 u17 world champion from Russia was incredible as well

The USA is running circles around the rest of the world. This is setting up to be another amazing run. Five in the semis is a great start! Team USA is starting to dominate the world scene, like PSU does the NCAA scene.

Kudos to the George kid, what a run but now he has Meyer. I am shocked by how good Lilledhal and Meyer are of such a young age. I think Luke’s toughest competition in right here in the states.

Let’s go USA-

Looks like McDanel will see Babaloo from Iran who just beat Kurugliyev. Tough match for sure.

Not sure who Lilledahl will have. The stream was perfect all night until the very last match. Javan was up 1-0 when it went out. Came back for a second and Javan was still up 1-0 and the clock showed :23 left. Stream went out again. I go to Flo arena and it says that Abdullyev pinned Javan at 4:19? I’m assuming arena is correct but who knows. If so, that is a big win for AZE and the US in the team race. Abdullyev won U20 Euro’s this year where he beat Ozbek in the finals. Tough match for Luke but a match he can absolutely win

Luke absolutely has tough competition domestically but his next 2 matches are going to be super tough as well. I think he gets by AZE in the semis but then likely will have the defending U20 61kg champion from Japan in the finals

Don’t know what’s more impressive the USAs first day run or @zzs006 play by play and analysis of each weight. Zz i know it’s been echoed multiple times but giving credit where credit is due so thank you for all that you have done so far

I'm only seeing Mat B on the Flo stream, are they using only one mat for the semis?
