The Drive, 2024 version

I'm definitely jinxing the team by writing this...

But that TD drive with two fourth and long conversions to send the game to OT might go down as our Illinois in November of 1994 game for this season. (Or, if you want a more recent but less emphatic moment, Minnesota in October of 2016. Another one that comes to mind...the 2005 win in Evanston vs. Northwestern when DWill scored a late heroic TD.)

Undefeated season on the line and PSU needs 96 yards to take the lead in the freezing rain and wind. No 4th down conversions...but a slow methodical drive and pinpoint passing (7 for 7) by Collins resulted in the go-ahead TD and the final obstacle to a perfect season.

(2016...PSU is 2-2 after getting drubbed by Michigan in the Big House...down 13-3 at half to Minnesota...huge 3rd quarter put us up 20-13, only to give up 10 points in the 4th quarter before getting a game-tying field goal with :02 left in regulation. Minny got a field goal to start OT and then Barkley took a center screen to the house to give us a win on our first play of overtime--29-26)

(2005...3-0 in out of conference games had us hopeful, but coming off of two horrific losing seasons, we weren't too optimistic...and trailing in a lackluster road game seemed to have us headed for more heartbreak. DWill earned his #1 recruit label and shook a DB free for the big score...two weeks later, we upset Ohio State in Happy Valley and went on to a BCS bowl and a #3 final ranking.)

In 1994, we only had 2 more games to finish the season and cruised easily against teams with losing records. This year, we certainly have more big challenges ahead.

2016 might be more comparable to this year...three weeks after the season-saving win vs. Minny, we were still unranked but hosted #2 Ohio State and upset them. And we really cruised from there...until the Rose Bowl classic vs. USC.

I was there on Saturday, and I'm just in awe of that final drive. We'd seen that big-game flop before from recent Franklin teams, but this flipped that script. Two fourth-down conversions...the flat flare to Singleton for the score...Barker's composure....wow. I hope we'll look back on it with the same acknowledgement as the 1994 drive in Champaign.
I was at that Illinois game... Great game!!!

Impact of USC Win at The Coliseum on National TV

In-addition to us being a clear favorite to make the playoffs at this point my biggest takeaway from our massive Win against USC at The Coliseum on National TV is that I’d like to think a Win like that, especially, if we end-up making the playoffs is that a Win of that magnitude should help us in recruiting, perhaps, even land a 5 Star, or 2.

Maybe, perhaps, that Win helps us land an Immanuel Iheanacho, or helps us flip Zahir Mathis, or maybe even causes Quincy Porter to give us a second look. A Brandon Finney flip would certainly be Nice as-well!

Great post. Yup, hitting not one but two 4th-and-longs to keep the drive alive on the way to a come-from-behind win in a crucial game on the road is the kind of thing that can create a special energy around a team.

But I'm leery of getting my hopes up too high. Our next game is against Wisconsin, which is showing signs of looking like Wisconsin again, and we get them on the road in a setting where a win for them would make their season.

I'm a believer in the Paterno philosophy that it's better to overestimate an opponent than to underestimate them.

This could be a special year but the team can't get its head in the clouds. Enjoy and celebrate the moment but then buckle down. No game is automatic. We've seen some major upsets around the sport this year.

OK, I'm pretty much out of buzz-killing cliches, but you get the idea... ;)

Another memorable surgical strike was the 2022 drive in the final minutes of the season opening game with Purdue with Clifford at the helm...

The 80-yard 4th-quarter drive capped by a TD throw on the last play of the game to beat Iowa in 2017 was pretty darn good too:

The thing about all this is … had Fleming not been able to make a spectacular grab on 4th down, many of the same folks feeling all gushy and mushy toward Allar and Franklin would be here talking about how PSU is doomed, Franklin can’t coach and Allar isn’t the leader we need … despite Franklin and Allar being the same exact people with the same exact skills.

Think about how you judge people.
State the obvious.....

An interesting bit of Prog Rock trivia is this: In a 1995 interview, Randy Bachman indicated that he thought that using the word "fragile" as a title for a rock album, as Yes had done with their 1971 album Fragile, was "strange." He thought that BTO music could be "dropped and kicked" without breaking, so, without intending any commentary about Yes, the band "tongue-in-cheek" called their next album Not Fragile.

First 8 track I ever bought was Not Fragile . Purchase was made at a Listening Booth Store.

The top 12 schools in wins all-time, how often should they make the playoffs in a 10-year period?

As the 1 or 2 seeds in each of those years, you'd think we'd be highly favored vs. the 7 or 8 seed...

But once you get to 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3...it's really hard to predict definitely.

And we have no idea how this thing will actually play out when it comes to seeding.

The CFP saw 8 of 10 1-seeds make the championship game; 5 of 10 2-seeds make the championship game; 5 of 10 3-seeds; and 2 of 10 4-seeds.

So...1 did remarkably better than 4, but 2 and 3 were a toss-up.

And when it came to titles--4 1-seed champs, 3 2-seed champs, 1 3-seed champs, and 2 4-seed champs. (NOTE: the two 4-seeds that beat 1-seeds also won in the title game.)

Meaning? All those PSU teams that made "national title games" under Paterno probably would've fared well in a playoff too...and the ones that were ranked 1 or 2 had a good chance of winning it all.
Agreed. Well said. I think we are the favorites to win in 82 and 86 (see the defacto title games) and in 94. 69...no idea if it's us or Texas but I would have loves to have found out.
The question with Paterno for me is...he was elite with a month to prepare...how to do against Miami or Georgia with only a week?

One of the best things about college football is watching high quality young men grow up. Allar looks and sounds so different from a year ago. He's a leader and that means a lot. And he really grew up as a player on Saturday -- showed emotional toughness and focus, probably did things even he didn't know he was capable of. It's exciting to watch the growth.
Franklin has grown up as well
