OT - Various OT topics

An interesting bit of Prog Rock trivia is this: In a 1995 interview, Randy Bachman indicated that he thought that using the word "fragile" as a title for a rock album, as Yes had done with their 1971 album Fragile, was "strange." He thought that BTO music could be "dropped and kicked" without breaking, so, without intending any commentary about Yes, the band "tongue-in-cheek" called their next album Not Fragile.

Wow, you are really taking care of business with that explanation!

If everything continues to develop for this team, I think it will compare more favorably to the 2005 at Northwestern team and/or the 2016 Saquon/Minnesota . Those games were gut checks that started a fire in young developing elite teams. —94 Illinois game had an already mature/elite , hyper-developed offense sputtering, and finally catching fire in the end. —This team has the talent to reach an even higher ceiling than their current level, and appears on track achieve that end. Both optimism and confidence are high.
An undefeated regular season is now a real possibility.

We are going to destroy USC's OL tomorrow.

I was sure we would eat him alive after watching the Michigan game..I was ready to eat my hat by half-time. Without reviewing the tape, I STILL have no idea how they kept Moss off his ass. That being said, I swear Is saw EGREGIOUS missed holding calls every time he stepped back to pass!

Their one Tackle was starting one second early every play as well which was bs. Coaches gotta recognize that and call out the refs.

I'm definitely jinxing the team by writing this...

But that TD drive with two fourth and long conversions to send the game to OT might go down as our Illinois in November of 1994 game for this season. (Or, if you want a more recent but less emphatic moment, Minnesota in October of 2016. Another one that comes to mind...the 2005 win in Evanston vs. Northwestern when DWill scored a late heroic TD.)

Undefeated season on the line and PSU needs 96 yards to take the lead in the freezing rain and wind. No 4th down conversions...but a slow methodical drive and pinpoint passing (7 for 7) by Collins resulted in the go-ahead TD and the final obstacle to a perfect season.

(2016...PSU is 2-2 after getting drubbed by Michigan in the Big House...down 13-3 at half to Minnesota...huge 3rd quarter put us up 20-13, only to give up 10 points in the 4th quarter before getting a game-tying field goal with :02 left in regulation. Minny got a field goal to start OT and then Barkley took a center screen to the house to give us a win on our first play of overtime--29-26)

(2005...3-0 in out of conference games had us hopeful, but coming off of two horrific losing seasons, we weren't too optimistic...and trailing in a lackluster road game seemed to have us headed for more heartbreak. DWill earned his #1 recruit label and shook a DB free for the big score...two weeks later, we upset Ohio State in Happy Valley and went on to a BCS bowl and a #3 final ranking.)

In 1994, we only had 2 more games to finish the season and cruised easily against teams with losing records. This year, we certainly have more big challenges ahead.

2016 might be more comparable to this year...three weeks after the season-saving win vs. Minny, we were still unranked but hosted #2 Ohio State and upset them. And we really cruised from there...until the Rose Bowl classic vs. USC.

I was there on Saturday, and I'm just in awe of that final drive. We'd seen that big-game flop before from recent Franklin teams, but this flipped that script. Two fourth-down conversions...the flat flare to Singleton for the score...Barker's composure....wow. I hope we'll look back on it with the same acknowledgement as the 1994 drive in Champaign.

The thing about all this is … had Fleming not been able to make a spectacular grab on 4th down, many of the same folks feeling all gushy and mushy toward Allar and Franklin would be here talking about how PSU is doomed, Franklin can’t coach and Allar isn’t the leader we need … despite Franklin and Allar being the same exact people with the same exact skills.

Think about how you judge people.
Yes. And if my uncle had different equipment, he'd be my aunt.

Allar and Yurcich and Franklin weren't ready for the moment and missed it last year vs. OSU, UM and Ole Miss.

But Allar and Kotelnicki and Franklin were ready this year. So we're having a different discussion.

(Your point is well-taken though about the haters...they will be silent this week and wait for the next flop or underachieving moment to harp on the data point that proves their hate...)

The top 12 schools in wins all-time, how often should they make the playoffs in a 10-year period?

Good data...another great question is do we win a title in 82 or 86 if we have to win 3 playoff games?
As the 1 or 2 seeds in each of those years, you'd think we'd be highly favored vs. the 7 or 8 seed...

But once you get to 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3...it's really hard to predict definitely.

And we have no idea how this thing will actually play out when it comes to seeding.

The CFP saw 8 of 10 1-seeds make the championship game; 5 of 10 2-seeds make the championship game; 5 of 10 3-seeds; and 2 of 10 4-seeds.

So...1 did remarkably better than 4, but 2 and 3 were a toss-up.

And when it came to titles--4 1-seed champs, 3 2-seed champs, 1 3-seed champs, and 2 4-seed champs. (NOTE: the two 4-seeds that beat 1-seeds also won in the title game.)

Meaning? All those PSU teams that made "national title games" under Paterno probably would've fared well in a playoff too...and the ones that were ranked 1 or 2 had a good chance of winning it all.

One of the best things about college football is watching high quality young men grow up. Allar looks and sounds so different from a year ago. He's a leader and that means a lot. And he really grew up as a player on Saturday -- showed emotional toughness and focus, probably did things even he didn't know he was capable of. It's exciting to watch the growth.
He was really fired up on that last drive. He was so pissed when he didn't get the snap, play clock winding down then the TO from the sideline. He was really telling the O linemen an earful when they were running back on the field. I loved that emotion out of him.

It is great to see him stepping into the leadership role and seemingly embracing the clutch moments, the winning time moments. I said before this game that we needed him to step up and make clutch plays in the clutch. Come up big on the road in a tough game versus a good opponent. Put the team on his back if you will. I didn't know if he could do that but we were all hoping and expecting it given his high profile recruitment. He proved he can be "the guy" and hopefully this just accelerates his confidence and he plays more and more loose, relaxed and fiery!
