Harsh Reality

Between falling well-behind in NIL, & having a head coach who can’t develop players, & has an anemic record against Top 10 teams I fear we’re srewed for the foreseeable future. Especially, with the playoffs set to expand significantly!

That’s my belief, & I’m sticking to it until I see drastic changes with my own 2 eyes, certainly not counting on that anytime soon!

Oregon State Dual

We don't have a dedicated thread yet for this. Should be a nice test for the team after a long break. I got to film Cael and Braeden Davis' media availability this afternoon for BSD--check it:

Anyone have any experience with FuboTV free trials? Thinking about trying that route to see the action. If not, I'll go oldschool and live on every word of JB's.

Tenn sues the NCAA

and the NCAA is screwed. As I understand it, and I haven't looked all that closely, the NCAA is talking about reprimanding Tenn for the details behind NIL deal between a booster and a player. Tenn says they had nothing to do with the transaction and cannot be held accountable. How can Tenn manage a transaction they had nothing to do with?

NIL is the wild, wild west and isn't a business model that will work. Just another brick in the wall to players unionizing and the universities negotiating a CBA. The only question is will this CBA be the NCAA or some other "super league" of college football/basketball teams? My point is that schools like Troy or Kent have vastly different needs for players and boosters than Michigan and Georgia et all. Will that end up creating two different governing bodies?

Michigan match thread - Fri, Jan 19

Setting this up now since there 's already some discussion on Friday's upcoming match at MI.

Match will be live on BTN. 6 pm eastern.

Yes, even Michigan. At the very most they'll only win 3 matches: 125, 149, and mayyyyybe HWT (Davison is good enough that Kerk can't make mistakes). But more likely we'll win HWT and pick off 125. (Rooting for Kasak, but Gomez is still a returning national finalist.)

Other than progress at 125 and 149, the real info is how readily Psycho's irresistible force overcomes Amine's immovable object.
125: Davis v DeAugustino
133: Nagao v Ragusin
141: Bartlett v Lemley
149: Kasak v Gomez
157: Haines v Mattin
165: Mesenbrink v Amine
174: Starocci v Griffith
184: Truax v Bullock
197: Brooks v Striggow
HWT: Kerk v Davison

PSU (& Philly non-) dominance

I was thinking about how good our coaches are and the statistical evidence of it is everywhere we look. For example:
Mark Hall and Carter Starocci 174
2017-2024 174 PSU looses 2 championships
(Mark would have beaten Kemdog in the finals of 2020 a sadness that will always haunt me)
This is a ridiculous 8 year run 🔥
Can i get some help around what PSU dominance has looked like in all of the weight classes under Cael ? Thanks

Match Thread Maryland Dual Discussion/PBP

Wrestlestat picks another shutout. If all the starters go, that will be no surprise. I hear the place is sold out, and will likely have lots of PSU fans attending. A pity the Terps best guy is at 197--but I like how they compete. I expect more like MSU than Mich. And it will be bittersweet if Greg faces off vs. Seth. What do you think?

Oh, and I have today's media availability up:

FB Recruiting Couple of recruiting tidbits on 2025 targets....

-- Spoke with class of 2025 defensive end target Adam Shovlin this week, who is originally a Duryea, Pennsylvania native playing his high school ball up at St. Thomas More in Connecticut and he told me he has two official visits planned to check out both Penn State and Stanford this June. He also mentioned his top schools at the moment are Duke, Michigan, Penn State Rutgers and Stanford. Will be one to watch as he has a very good chance of being bumped up to a four-star by the time it's all said and done.

-- Also got the latest from 2025 athlete Cameron Miller from Winslow Township (NJ) and he will be releasing a top five soon that will not feature Penn State. There was talk early on in this cycle that he might be a Penn State lean, but it seems like the Nittany Lions are focusing their attention elsewhere. His current top two favorites are Kentucky and Wisconsin.

-- Now one prospect who did include Penn State in his top five recently was Renick Dorilas out of Union High School in New Jersey. However in a similar situation to Miller, Dorilas is also a bit lower on the board for Penn State as the general feeling here is he will stay in state and play for Rutgers. Again this should not be taken out of context as PSU has much bigger targets at DB currently.

FB Recruiting Previewing Penn State's final Junior Day of 2024

The final Junior Day of the year is here for Penn State and here is what you need to know.

THE TOP TARGETS

Let's start with the top targets that are going to be on campus this weekend.

For starters, four-star quarterback Matt Zollers, an in-state prospect out of Spring-Ford will be on campus. The Royersford natives' recruitment has taken off over the last few weeks and recently took visits to both Georgia and Florida. We mentioned yesterday that UGA could be the team to watch closely in this one going forward, that being said, Penn State is making Zollers a priority, and Saturday's visit could be a big one in his recruitment as the Nittany Lions look to garner some momentum back to their side.

At wide receiver, Jeff Exinor is certainly a name to know. He's among the Nittany Lions' top wide receiver targets in the class and has developed a strong relationship thus far with the Maryland native. Of course, the Nittany Lions also have a very good relationship with Exinor's high school, McDonogh.

In the 2026 recruiting cycle, Harrisburg offensive lineman Kevin Brown is the big visitor. The four-star recruit is one of the top 30 prospects in the nation overall in the 2026 recruiting cycle and is a priority target for the Nittany Lions in the cycle. They're going to do everything they can to keep him at home.

SETTING THE TONE

There are several visitors this weekend that we're going to be watching just to get an idea of how the visit ultimately sets the tone for their recruitment and relationship with Penn State going forward.

In the 2025 recruiting cycle, wide receivers Vernon Allen, Romero Ison, Trey Jones, and Samari Reed are all worth watching closely. The Nittany Lions board at wide receiver is still filling out and is still fluid. This weekend's visits should help quite a bit in wide receivers coach Marques Hagans when it comes to figuring out that board.

On the defensive line, defensive tackles Blake Belin and Haleem Muhammed. Much like the wide receiver board, the Nittany Lions' board on the defensive line is still being sorted out. This weekend should be a good gauge of how Penn State feels about both players and vice versa. Belin does not hold an offer from Penn State yet but has made trips to Happy Valley in the past, he recently picked up an offer from Virginia. Muhammad, on the other end, is a rawer prospect only playing two years of ball so far but picked up an offer from the Nittany Lions a few weeks ago.

St. Joe's Prep athlete Cameron Smith will be on campus. The three-star prospect is nearing 20 scholarship offers in his recruitment including one from the Nittany Lions. Allen is most likely a linebacker at the next level. This will be his first opportunity to meet with new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Tom Allen as well.

WHO COULD RECEIVE AN OFFER?

Prospects who could receive an offer from the Nittany Lions this weekend include TE Jackson Accuardi, DT Blake Belin, ATH Bradley Gompers, and ATH Teriq Mallory - all a part of the 2025 recruiting cycle. In the 2026 cycle, quarterback Derek Zammit and offensive lineman Carter Scruggs are both worth noting while 2027 prospect Sidney Rouleau will almost certainly receive an offer at some point though it's unclear if that will be this weekend.
