(ignoring the obvious issues that Franklin needs to fix asap if we want to have a good season)

1. Sanders played better tahn I expected. He consistently earned more yards than he should have.
2. KJ is a big time player. No need to comment more about him.
3. Very few penalties (thank goodness)
4. Pinegar hit his FGs and looked comfortable out there
5. Crowd was fantastic
6. Lots of playing time for the 2nd and 3rd team on defense
7. YGM played well
8. Nick Scott

They were rotating people so much it was hard to keep track. There were obvious performances on defense that were no so great.

Just looking for opinions on potential changes.....such as Linebacker... Luketa, Parsons... or Oline Fries/Wright...

I thought the Dbacks would play better...they were lost in space in the 4th.

What would Joe do?

Hey all, last night I had the pleasure of running into an in-ground yellowjacket nest while mowing my lawn. I got stung about 5-7 times before I even knew what was happening.

This morning I was able to locate the general location of the nest, right under a tree and in my lawn. The problem I have is that those foam sprays, etc. probably aren't going to be able to get down into the nest far enough to be effective. After one application the nest seems as nasty as ever.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas or proven ways of getting rid of these things. A coworker mentioned they had some success "drowning" the nest by letting a hose run into it overnight but I've also heard that doesn't necessarily work. And I'm not sure I want to try pouring gas down there.

Can any of you recommend a good sports bar anywhere from Provincetown to Boston to watch Penn State battle Pitt next Saturday night, preferably where Penn State fans might be hanging out?

I was going to save Iowa for last on my road trip through college wrestling but after going through Cedar Falls and Ames, I just couldn't bypass Iowa City. So, here it goes:

125 – Lee (So) <Franklin Regional, PA>

Spencer Lee certainly had a blast last season. Lee went into the tournament as the 3 seed and proceeded to pummel the field on his way to a championship as a true freshman. He even managed to give Penn State an assist, pinning NaTo in the semis. Lee had an overall season record of 22-2 with the 2 losses coming to Ronnie Bresser at Midlands and NaTo at the Big 10 championship. Fix @125 or not, I don’t think Lee will be challenged this year. The only question to be answered is, can anyone hold him to a regular decision?

133 – DeSanto (So) <Exeter Twp, PA> or Renteria (So) <Oak Park, IL>

It will be interesting to see which way Iowa goes with this one as both still have a redshirt available. Austin DeSanto entered last season’s tournament for Drexel as the 7 seed and went 2-2 (30-7 season record) after imploding against Steven Micic. Jason Renteria went 8-4 on the season for Nebraska after having his redshirt pulled and didn’t qualify for the tournament. Last season Paul Glynn (Jr) went 7-11 for Iowa and didn’t qualify for the tournament.

141 – Murin (Fr) <Central Cambria, PA> or Turk (Jr) <Montini Catholic, IL>

Max Murin is coming off his redshirt year where he went 15-3. His three losses were all to NCAA qualifiers: Tyler Smith (Bucknell), Colton Schilling (Cal Poly) and Cole Martin (Wisconsin). Vince Turk went 16-10 last year and made it to the round of 16 at the tournament (3-2 with a pigtail). He had several quality wins over the season with the biggest coming against future AA, Chad Red in the Big Ten tournament (who he later lost to at the NCAAs). Carter Happel (So) also got some starts @141 last year. He had an 11-7 season record including wins against Schilling and Thorn and a couple of loses to Murin.

149 – Lugo (Jr) <South Dade, FL>

Two-time qualifier Patricio Lugo (1-2 in 2017, R12 in 2016) transferred in from Edinboro before the start of last season. He redshirted last year for the Hawkeyes and went 6-2. His loses were against Ryan Deakin and Josh Maruca. Lugo had wins against Kolodzik and Austin O’Connor. Lugo takes over for 4-time AA Brandon Sorenson (5th in 2018, 3rd in 2017, 2nd in 2016, 4th in 2015).

157 – Young (So) <Punxsutawney, PA> or Glosser (Jr) <EBF, IA>

Kaleb Young wrestled at 165 and 174 last year going 9-7 on the season. He had some wins against qualifiers @165. Jaren Glosser (Jr) went 13-4 on the season (mostly in opens) with regular decision loses to Pantaleo, O’Connor and Deakin. Last year, Michael Kemerer went 27-3 on the season and was a victim of terrible seeding, meeting up with the Nolfinator in the quarter finals. Kemerer ended up finishing in 4th place (3rd in 2017).

165 – Marinelli (So) <St. Paris Graham, OH>

Alex Marinelli entered the 165 meat grinder last season and AA’d coming in 6th from the 5th seed (19-6 season record). Of course we all know about his biggest win versus 2-time national champion Vincenzo Joseph. Marinelli went into the Big 10 championships undefeated and finished the year 6-6. That’s not a criticism about him. It’s a testament to how stacked it was and continues to be at 165 (133 has nothing on 165). I look forward to a Marinelli-Joseph rematch.

174 – Kemerer (Jr) <Franklin Regional, PA>

Kemerer had enough of Nolf and is running to 174 . Last season, Joey Gunther moved up from 165 and went 16-9 on the season and 0-2 in the tournament (he went 2-2 @165 in 2017). Gunther has since transferred to Illinois to be their starter @165.

184 – Wilcke (Jr) <OA-BCIG, IA>

Cash Wilcke moves back down to his natural weight class after manning 197 for the last two years. Last year, Mitch Bowman went 14-13 on the season and 2-2 in the tournament.

197 – Warner (Fr) <Washington Community, IL>

Jacob Warner enters the lineup after a 15-4 redshirt season. His loses were to 3 NCAA qualifiers: Wilcke, Patrick Brucki, Christian Brunner and to Jake Woodley of Oklahoma (who he also had a win against). His most notable wins were against Miklus and Jake Smith (WVU). Last year, Wilcke went 21-9 on the season and making it to the round of 12 at the tournament (he also went R12 in 2017).

Heavy – Stoll (Sr) <Kasson-Mantorville, MN>

After finishing a season healthy for the first time, Stoll unfortunately added a gunshot wound to his list of knee injuries this offseason. I’m assuming for now that he will be fully recovered for his last season at Iowa. Stoll went 25-6 last season and after getting upset by Hemida in the 2nd round, he went through the wrestlebacks to finish 5th to match his seeding. Dude, its not a good idea to break into your locked and loaded buddy's house at 4:30 in the morning. If I saw frickin Gregor Clegane breaking through my front door, I'd shoot him too. Sam is really lucky that Turk is a bad shot.

Iowa returns their national champion and 3 of their 4 other AAs. Iowa should have 10 qualifiers this season and have a very good chance at improving upon their 97 points from last season and will have a great battle for 2nd place with tOSU and OSU. It’s been said many times before and I will say it again, it will be a shame if a PSU-Iowa dual doesn’t happen. There are a lot of intriguing head to head matches here. Especially with all of the weight and lineup changes between both teams.

Appalachian State Mountaineers
Head coach: Scott Satterfield (41-22, sixth year)

2017 record and S&P+ ranking: 9-4 (18th)

Projected 2018 record and S&P+ ranking: 8-4 (63rd)

Five key points:

1. It looked like App State had messed up the timing of its jump from FCS to FBS, but the Mountaineers stuck the landing as well as anyone since Marshall.
2. Satterfield must account for a key loss on the coaching staff: defensive coordinator Nate Woody.
3. He must also face life without Taylor Lamb, four-year starting quarterback.
4. If the offense has a decent QB, it certainly has everything else. This might be Satterfield’s deepest collection of skill position talent.
5. The remarkable depth of the 2017 defense should pay off now that a few front-seven starters have to be replaced. The secondary could be phenomenal.

Obvious QB questions aside, the Mountaineers return a ton elsewhere on the depth chart. Star running back Jalin Moore is back, and a receiving corps that had to lean heavily on freshmen last year (and survived doing so) now gets to lean on sophomores. All-conference left tackle Victor Johnson is back, and while there are a few pieces to replace in the defensive front seven, the secondary is loaded.

You still need a QB, though, and Zac Thomas gets first crack at the job. The sophomore led a garbage-time field goal drive against Georgia last year, but that’s about the extent of his experience. He appears to be pretty mobile, and co-coordinators Shawn Clark and Frank Ponce don’t appear to be changing much of the system.

If Thomas can’t cut it, there are other options. Sophomore Jacob Huesman and redshirt freshman Peyton Derrick have good size, and incoming three-star freshman Stephon Brown, at 6’5, 220, has great size. But the best-case scenario is probably that the third-year Thomas figures things out.

My NYC trip will be during the Pitt game. I'll be staying at the Kimpton Muse in Times Square and according to the NYC Alumni chapter the closest places to eat, drink, watch the game is the Proper West Midtown (39th & 6th) or the Mercury Bar Hells Kitchen (9th ave).

I have some professionally produced documentaries (including one on JoePa with Keith Jackson) that I want to preserve/convert to DVD. I have an old Panasonic VHS/DVD player that does the job but it is old and the resolution is terrible. I prefer to not mail them away and want to use a local business. Does anyone have any tips on what types of questions to ask to ensure that I am getting the highest quality results using the latest technology? Thanks in advance.

Although I am an old guy, I lift every fourth day, occasionally third day. I have marveled at the following phenomenon my entire life. Regardless how I feel, or how I slept or whatever, as long as I write down my reps (always do), I can increase one more rep (same reps to failure for all sets too, another interesting thing) next time out. The less than ½% that it might vary is even usually that I can increase more than one rep. So my question is, am I really one rep stronger or is the mind that overpowering? Thank you!

I've been told by my wife that we, along with another couple, will be taking an Amtrak from Pa to New York for a long weekend this year, late summer or fall.. I also have been told that we will be going to stay in the Times Square area, seeing Wicked, Drunk Shakespeare, and who knows what.

Since Roar's 133 and 141 weight is generating discussion about Arijau and Yianni, I'll go with Cornell's lineup next.

125 – Baughman (Jr)

A two-year starter going 25-13 as the starter @125 in 2017 and 23-9 in 2018 after moving back down from 133 to become the starter again @ 125 midway through the season (replacing Russo who wasn't doing very well). He somehow didn’t qualify for NCAAs either year despite having some quality wins (especially in 2017).

133 – Tucker (Sr)

He went 23-12 as a first year starter last year, going 1-2 at the NCAA tournament. Despite the solid season, he will probably lose his starting spot to a pretty good incoming freshman.

133 – Arijau (Fr)

He went 9-1 wrestling for the Fingers Lake Wrestling Club last year (including a win against Tucker). <Note: I saw the speculation that Arijau may go at 125. I'll believe it when I see it.>

141 – Diakomihalis (So)

An epic true freshman campaign sporting a 37-1 record and NCAA title. For now, I’m assuming he stays at 141. I just don’t see him jumping a weight coming off an ACL injury.

149 – Koll (Sr)

A starter @141 in 2017 going 18-15 and @149 in 2018 going 9-6.

157 – Stroker (Jr)

He won the starting spot over Simaz last year, going 14-9 and is looking to be Cornell’s full-time starter this year.

165 – Chavez (Sr)

Chavez went 23-6 as a first year starter last year. In one of the surprises of the tournament, he came in as the #16 seed and came out of the 165 weight class meat grinder with a 7th place finish.

174 – Womack (Sr)

Womack went 36-11 and finished #8 at 165 in 2017. He moved up to 174 (going 18-11) and qualified again last year but went 0-2 in the tournament. He did almost have a monumental upset against BoJo in the 1st round.

184 – Dean (So)

Dean had a very solid freshman campaign going 32-6 and finishing 8th at the tournament (from the 9 seed).

197 – Darmstadt (So)

Darmstadt had a great run heading into the tourney earning the #2 seed. He had a rough ending to the tournament losing his last 3 matches and finished the season with a 34-4 record and a 6th place finish.

H – Sweany (Sr)

A two-time NCAA qualifier, going 0-2 in 2016 and 2-2 last year with a 21-8 record.

H- Honis (Sr)

Honis went 29-16 in 2017 as the 197 starter en route to qualifying for the NCAA tournament (going 1-2).


Cornell returns all of their starters from last year, including a national champ and 4 other former AAs, and adds a dynamic freshman. This is a pretty good looking team. Chavez might not be able to replicate his tournament result from last year and someone might be able to catch Yianni (I’d still take Yianni against the field), but there is good potential for more points at most of the other weights so they should be able to surpass their 48 point/7th place finish from last year.

Or, any other comparables at maybe a tad lower price point? 36" width model is what I will need.

Between Wolf and Viking, I think I'm leaning towards Wolf, but I'm not exactly sure why.
